My wife's vision is very poor. She is "Legally Blind". She can't sight a gun.

Lately, she has been telling me that she feels defenseless when I'm not home, and wants me to leave a pistol out for her.

I'm a little reluctant to do that.

I've been giving some thought to setting up a pistol caliber carbine with one of those super bright green lasers I keep seeing at the gun shows.

Some of those lasers are stupid bright, and I'm thinking that she could possibly actually use that at living room distances to defend herself if need be. There might even be some intimidation factor there as well. When coupled to the dog that wouldn't let anybody sneak up on her or hide in the room she might actually be able to fend off a burglar.

So, that brings up the questions...

Anybody mess with these things?

Are they any kind of reliable?

Will they hold a zero?

Do they eat batteries?

Can I trust the Chinese stuff?

Are there any super bright lasers that are made by reputable manufacturers like Burris or Leupold?

Somebody tell me what's up with these things please!

When it comes too living room distance?

She really doesn't need to see much of anything except WHO IS SHE SHOOTING!!!

She could do better with a typical HD short barrel shotgun!

And if she can see at all?

She can point a shotgun barrel with the stock clamped under her arm better then she can point a handgun with a Laser!!
It would be harder for a bad guy to take away from her too.

Please rethink this!!!

Crimson Trace laser grips or Lasermax guide rods are sub 5mw and eye safe, will give a nice red dot while not risking blindness to the person the laser is on.
Chinese lasers are very variable in quality and output. Even if advertised as sub 5mw they can be much greater. A friend had one seized by Australian Customs. It tested at 28mw, not the advertised sub 5mw.

If she can see the laser dot she may be able to see a large red dot style holographic sight such as an aimpoint.
If you are considering a laser as a weapon, then look at wicked lasers.Be aware that very high output lasers will cause burns, blindness and potentially start fires as they are waved around.

Radagast-

I have an M-4 style AR15 with an Eotech on it.

She can shoot that gun, but I'm thinking that a bright laser might work better in her case.

Also, I'm thinking that a 9MM fired from a pistol caliber carbine will be smaller, lighter, less complicated, and just generally more friendly to her.

Even the lowly High Point gets great reviews...
