Cleaning rust from bluing

My father passed on to me a sporterized Mauser '95 chambered in .30-'06.

Good advice on rust removal for sure. I would respectfully add that the 95 was not intended for 06 pressures, so be prudent with it. If you handload, I wouldn't exceed the starting loads by much, and would avoid anything near a max load. I have a nice 91 Argentine in 7.65 Belgian (its real name) that I used to shoot Norma factory loads in until I realized that the pressures were running in the high 50k range  I backed off with my handloads & it is truly a tack driver with modest loads. Won a HP Rifle match with it in the late 70s - my open sights beat guys with accurized springfields with peep sights, mud flaps & chrome exhausts (of course, the bbl is 29" so I had a serious advantage being that much closer to the target ;) )... Ticked them off so bad they never gave me the trophy, but I still had the bragging rights and got a lot more mileage digging in their stuff every weekend... :neener:

Have not had rust for many years but when growing up we used to take a number two lead pencil (only thing we could find available) and write the rust spot out. Was told back then the carbon would kill the rust.

Anyone know if this is true? Can't remember if our guns still had any bluing left before we started?

Today I would try the penny thing or bronze wool.
