I've been shooting handguns for 6-7yrs and my primary carry is an XDm 9. My Taurus TCP .380, & S&W 442 pretty much fulfill my alternative carry options.

I have a Lancaster Arms AK 47 that is a blast to shoot, not über accurate, and basically I bought it without a lot of research, but as a Pre-Obama election purchase because I was relatively new to guns and wanted to exercise my right before it was possibly taken from me.

Since then, I got the Milsurp bug and bought a Mosin 91/30, an M44, and
most recently a service Grade M1 Garand. I love the milsurps for many reasons... history, the fun of cleaning and restoring, etc etc. and I expect that milsurps will continue to be a primary focus, but...

Now that that's out of the way, I want an AR. Why? Cause they're cool. The honest answer is... because I just want one.

OK, I've convinced myself that my AK is inferior for SHTF modern urban warfare and that the AR .223 round and flexible platform is a far better solution. Ok, now that I've totally convinced myself that I need an AR for the situations described above...

I'm mostly convinced that the Colt 6933 SBR is the best solution if I am only going to own one and only one AR. I think that most SHTF situations will occur in relatively close, urban ranges and I feel the 11.5" barrel is worth the BATFE tax, the 6 month wait, etc and will give up very little in longer range accuracy of minute of torso up to 100-200 yards.

I guess my only question is whether I could build a comparatively quality SBR for less money?

BCM has some very fine factory offerings in shorter barreled AR's for a comparatively modest sum compared to some other companies.

IMO, you can't go wrong with the Colt's, especially if you're getting any kind of deal.( I recall seeing some great prices on Colt's from CDNN). But I'd recommend also taking a look at Spikes Tactical. They're very well made and quite reasonably priced. I'm extremely happy with my middy Spikes, and I don't think I've ever read anything seriously negative about them, and their customer service is VERY well spoken of.
If price is a major consideration, I've seen the S&W's going for surprisingly reasonable prices lately.
The above recommendation for Bravo Co. is good, too, but I believe they'll run you a good bit more.

Yeah, BCM popped into my head too. No, it isn't a Colt, but really I rank the BCMs right up there with the likes of Colt and Daniel Defense in overall quality. In fact, regardless of the make of whatever AR it is that I'm working on, when I have to replace parts, I use parts from Bravo Company.

One thing that I do like about the BCM is that you have the option of going with a hammer forged barrel. Another thing is that you can have the rifle built to your specs, from the handguard to the stock and trigger.

The thing is, the .223 rounds performance lives & dies on high velocity.
I would want all I could get, and you won't get it out of an 11.5" barrel.

What you will get is horrific muzzle blast & night vision destroying big balls of fire.

And you probably don't want to be wearing hearing protection in a SHTF situation!!

AR-15's that short are not noted for being the most reliable either.
The gas port is too close to the muzzle for proper gas dwell time.

If your interested in going the SBR route for such a gun, then maybe take a look over at Clyde's Armory. They have Colt 6943's selling for less than $1500 right now. They are very similar to the 6933, but have a monolithic upper instead of the plastic handguards giving you rail space for any doodads you might want to hang off the gun.

And...if you're going to go through all of the trouble to get an SBR, might as well look into a suppressor too. Those short barreled ARs are pretty darned loud.

I wouldn't want my only one to be an SBR. Something as simple as traveling out of state is suddenly a Federal Offense.

resale value wise,i'd chose the colt.now,if you decide to move, can you transfer it to the state where you are going to.if you took it out of state, you would have to submit a form for permission to do so from nfa branch.that takes a couple of weeks for reply, plus every cop who see's it would pucker.you would open up your house to batfe inspection/check on the weapon?the 200 tax could be spent on mags.that gun is great for swat house clearing etc,or close in jungle fighting.but,it's your dime.plus, you would need to buy a safe. my choice for an all around is the 6720 or the 6940.any warranty probs,i just ship the gun back to the factory,no nfa paperwork to deal with. just my thoughts an the matter to ponder

Thanks for the advice and opinions gentleman. What additional processes/paperwork would be involved if I had to return an SBR to the factory for warranty work?

If its what you want, then you should get it.

If you are making actual preps for "urban warfare," your selection of rifle accounts for MAYBE 1% of what you need to do to prepare for such a thing. If you have the other 99% covered, any compact reliable rifle would probably serve just as well.

Colt makes excellent rifles.
My personal favorite is the 6940.
