Well, I went to the gunshow today and I didn't expect much. I walked in and the first table I came to had a nice looking Colt Agent on it and the priced looked good to me so I bought it. I normally don't walk into a show and buy the first thing I see but, even though I am not up to speed on Colt revolvers, I knew I could go too far wrong for the price.

What I want to know is, what other models of Colt grips will fit this gun? Will the Detective, Cobra and others all fit or what?

It has the orginal Colt grips with rampant pony but I think I would like something different on it.

Here is the good part, the tag on the gun said $189! You just don't find snubbies for less two $200 and forget about a nice Colt for that price. On the same table he had a Rossi for $199! I went with the Colt.;) Also, I asked the salesman what the bottom dollar price was and he sadi he could do $175! I asked if he could cut the tie wrap and I checked it over. It has a nice DA and SA trigger and the lock-up was the best I have ever seen on ANY revolver. ZERO play in any direction. I smiled and said it looks fine and that I would take it.

From there, it was all downhill. I didn't see anything else that I wanted to buy and most of the other prices were high. I almost passed it up because I wanted to check out the rest of the show. I am glad I didn't because when I came back later, he had sold a good portion of his handguns and I am sure someone would have snapped it up.

The Colt Agent has the "Stubby" grip frame.
Other Colt "D" frame revolvers made before 1965 still had the original long grip frame.

After 1965 ALL Colt "D" frame revolvers had the "Stubby" frame and the grips all interchange.
Colt's that will fit your Agent include the post- 1965 Detective Special, Cobra, Diamondback, Police Positive Specials, and the Viper.

The good news is, most companies that offer Colt "D" frame grips only offer them for the "stubby" frame.

Among others, Pachmayr offers the rubber Compac which is probably the most popular grip ever made for the "D" frames, and Hogue offers wood grips for them.

I have a 70's vintage Colt Cobra. I took the original Colt wooden wrap around grips off. They were uncomfortable as this lightweight pistol actually has a sharp recoil. I put on hogue rubber grips. Best grip to date, and I have tried the Pachymr rubber grips.

By the way, you got a real deal!. Also let me recommend that you only shoot +P loads for self defense. Yes the Cobra is +P rated, but +P loads are hard on Aluminum revolvers. The Cobra will get out of time much faster than if you practice with standard ammo.

My Cobra is sighted to point of aim with 158 grain bullets.

It's an aluminum-framed version of the old Colt Detective Special . . . so it's a light little snubbie . . . but holds six rounds instead of the "J" frame Smith's five.

BTW, although speedloaders "sold" for Colt D.S. and Agent snubbies are harder to find, speedloaders for the K frame Smith .38/.357 wheelguns WILL work just fine with the Colt 6-shot D.S. and Agent revolvers.

Enjoy your "steal" of a find!

Keep the Rampant Pony grips and add a Tyler T grip, it's what we all did in the day. Besides rubber grips are butt ugly!. I have discovered that the first Gen Agents actually have a slightly different contour of the grip than the later universal D frame grip. The grips from the former don't fit the later correctly.:scrutiny:

It was $185 wth tax. I really didn't know anything about it when I bought it but I knew I liked it and a light weight name brand snubbie for less than $200 seemed like a can't lose situation.

I do like the grips it came with but I need something that will fill in under the frame. The T-grip sounds like a plan. I have a set on my S&W 28 and another on my square butt S&W 34 22lr.

Oh that is a late issue Agent.Never mind the rough outsides it has a good heart! I wore one out after 2 rebuilds. I still have one as a BUG. Just put a black Tyler T grip on it and you are good to go! The sights, being adjusted (by a lazer on that one-probably)for 158 grain ammo, really work well with Remington LSWCHP , the current version is +p and you shouldn't shoot many. I practice with LRN 158 ammo that is non +p but hits within a fraction of an inch of the +p Rem stuff-so who cares? These guns are usually extremely accurate. Run some well shaken CLP into the action and dry fire it a bit- it looks like the little jewel in the rough has been sitting! NICE SCORE!!!!:)

That's exactly like the Agent I carry daily. My grip choice is a set of Teak Eagle Secret Service grips. Beware, some might try and tell you that J-Frame holsters will fit the D-frame, they won't! It is essentially one size larger than a Smith J-Frame, so buy accordingly. They're great guns to carry and own, but a little tough to shoot.

Good luck and enjoy.

"Such a deal, I should find one!"

This "D-frame slut", as my buddy calls me, is almost in shock over your good fortune.

The frame is so close to that of a Ruger SP-101 that leather holsters for the Ruger should work find for the Agent. At least, that is my experiance with an IWB holster from Andrews Custom Leather in Florida. Yeah, the holster has flutes for a 5-shot but it all works.

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I have a recommendation for grips for a Colt Agent, if you haven't bought some already. I also bought an Agent in slightly worse shape, but with a good shiny finish for $180 a few years back at an ACE Hardware store. I bought a set of the laminate Badger Walnut boot grips that work great. I hate the shiny finish, so I stripped it off and refinished them with linseed oil. I love the grips now, and with the bobbed hammer it is not only my favorite gun, it is my favorite carry piece.
