considering a full size revolver

sounds like a lot of work to shoot multiple cartridges in the blackhawk, where the redhawk allows you to moon clip most of them so in terms of multiple calibers, it seems the redhawk wins out.. and if i do end up moon clipping a lot of the cartridges for easier/faster reloading, then its going to pretty much eliminate any possibility of extraction problems anyway, about the only thing that could happen then is something getting under the extractor

seems the redhawk in that sense is more versatile though, so thats probably the path im going to take.. ill get a blackhawk later though and eventually have both.. but redhawk first

One problem with moonclips is that the grips may have to be compromised to allow enough room to insert and eject a full cylinder at once. Once you get the gun clear, you can reload, but moon clips in total are not necessarily as fast as one might imagine. I would rather have a speed loader and a real revolver round.

in the pistols ive seen, no such problems exist with moon clips, so im not too worried about it.. would anyone disagree that the redhawks ability to take moon clips and shoot a much wider variety of ammo makes it the more flexible, utilitarian option.. or is there some big reason im not seeing that the blackhawk would be a better go-to pistol for any situation, outdoors, open carry self defense, a world without rule of law, etc?

The Redhawk is too big to be a do everything gun in my opinion, but it might support the unconventional applications you are discussing.

exactly how much more compact is the blackhawk vs a redhawk?.. i have an 1860 army which should have a similar sized frame.. wouldnt be hard to carry with a shorter barrel and a more compact grip

well, cant seem to find a good argument for one or the other.. so... id probably go for the redhawk, trying to find reason for the blackhawk and im just not really seeing much of one over the redhawk, and when i say redhawk, i could mean standard, or super, i dont really know, is there any reason to stay away from super redhawks?

the super redhawk looks like its about the same size as the standard, just with the ability to add a scope mount and a couple other obvious differences.. but it seems the super redhawk is more versatile, able to more easily add a scope and with the round barrel there are clamp on options for adding a light mount with it.. so it seems like i can make better use of it.. and at roughly the same weight as a standard redhawk of the same weight, am i losing anything if i choose a super over a standard?

  1. It's ugly
  2. May not be available in the caliber you wanted

On the plus side, it reportedly has the better action over the Redhawk, carrying separate springs for the trigger and hammer. Not sure about 480 Ruger, but 454 Casull would support a range of cartridges and loads.

well ive decided on the standard redhawk for a few reasons.. one, im not going to load it so damn hot, i need rubber grips or both hands just to handle it, having a handgun that REQUIRES two hands (im not psychic, i may find myself in a situation with only one available) would just be silly.. ruger only loads as a maximum are absolutely fine

other reason is, i dont really like the super redhawks scope mounts, the giant screws get in the way if you decide to put a rail on top and i figure for the only kind of optic i really plan to put on it (a micro red dot or an RMR, i can easily just replace the rear sight with a mount.. so i dont need those scope mounts

and lastly, if i decide i want to go with hotter ammunition, the standard redhawk can safetly handle .454 casull with a super redhawk cylinder, so i have the option of upgrading the standard redhawk to do what a super redhawk does in the future if i decide i want the added power

so.. i think my final decision is a ruger redhawk 4.2" barreled model (they only make the .45 colt in 4.2") that has been cut for moon clips. model number 5032

well, im already thinking of ways i can configure it and modify it to my liking.. wish they still made a blued version, not sure how i feel about bright, shiny stainless steel.. looks great with pearl grips for a more flashy look, but i wouldnt mind something darker, and matte and it seems the only way to achieve that would be to cerakote it which im not sure id want to do either.. anyway, yeah, the redhawk seems the most versatile for what im looking for especially with the cylinder cut for moon clips
