... wants to buy me a pistol for my birthday.

I've always been in the camp of dressing around the most gun you can reasonably carry and the SR9c has been a perfect carry gun for me for several years. Fits me like a glove, I shoot it great, love the capacity (28 rounds on tap if needed) summer or winter.

Fly in the ointment is an ever degrading back problem. Pain meds are ever increasing and I'm constantly having to make allowances. I've been slow to give up on the SR9c, but I've been looking all summer at options for something lighter.

Until recently I had narrowed my choices to the Sig P938, S&W Shield 9mm or the Walther PPS. I've put off the purchase until I could put my hands on the Walther (the Sig being the top runner otherwise).

Then Ruger releases the LC9s. I've handled the LC9 previously, and the feel is similar to the SR9, just in a smaller package. Just didn't like the DA trigger. Now with the better trigger of the LC9s, I think the die is cast. I also love the non-ambidextrous safety, a plus over the P938 (in addition to cost savings). We'll be off to the LGS this weekend to check it out.

I have a cool wife.

Congrats!

I can empathize with the back issues. Fortunately, carrying an LCP is about as easy as it gets for me.

Congrats!

I personally like the Shield the best. Like 20oz, and low recoil for the size. My fav subcompact of all I have ever owned.

I liked the Shield, but I the familiarity between the LC9 and the SR9 wins for me. Plus, I'm sold on Ruger's reliability and customer service. 2,000 trouble free rounds through the SR9 is a great sales pitch!

My wife is also very cool and supporting of my shooting obcessions. :) She's already told me I'll be getting my first 45 this Christmas. I've never owned a 45 before but figured I would give that HiPoint JHP a try since I'm only going to use it for a range toy and the price is cheap..
I know it's a HiPoint but the reviews from most are favorable.

I'm not a big fan of the LCR and I would probably get the Sheild. I know exactly what you mean about carrying a LCR because lately my wifes PT 709 finds it's way into my pocket most weekends in the summer cause it's just so damn handy and small.

Having an awesome wife sure does help because I can't imagine if I got nagged for my ammo purchases :p

Awesome lady you got there!!

and I agree with the above.

While I am sure I would like the new LC9s, I don't like that it has a mag disconnect.

Its funny I just posted this in another thread but I can't help but compliment S&W for the Shield. I am not a fan of poly guns but I have over 2,000 rounds through my S&W Shield with no failures to date. It is superbly accurate, low recoil, and has decent sights for a gun that I pocket carry. The target and video below were shot at 14 yards.

Yes, you do !

Could she be Sara32 ?

I indeed think the Shield is a great gun and definitely was considered (will still give it another look before laying down the cash). Just a hair bigger than the LC9 and a few ounces heavier. Like you, I'd rather not have the mag disconnect but that's never been a deal breaker for me.

Could she be Sara32 ?
Nah, I don't think so!

There are indeed some special wives out there... mine gave me an H&K USP Compact 9mm, a very special Browning 2000 (trap - rare!) to match my field grade 2000, a beautiful Winchester Model 12.... and lemme see... I'm sure there are others too...

Gotta keep those wives around!

My Shield doesn't have a mag disconnect. There are different variations.

I have 2500 rounds thru my Shield in 2.5 years. Love the gun!

There's a lot to like about the Shield. It's biggest drawback for me is weight, which is the only reason I'm considering changing from my trusty SR9c. The a shield is within 3 ounces of the SR9, so I don't see that I'm gaining much by going to that gun.

The LC9s drops me down to 17 ounces. That's a noticeable difference.

Sorry to hear about your back problems. I have been very fortunate in avoiding them but I know some people similarly afflicted so I can understand your situation. When I want to go lighter and smaller than my Ruger SR9c I opt for my Kahr CM9. I really like the DA trigger on it and the great ergonomics that it has.

And like you already know, you have a super wife too!

Thanks, bannockburn, and congrats on your super wife!

I've looked at and handled the Kahrs. No chemistry there. No magic between my hand and the gun. I wasn't wow'd by the trigger like some folks. And I'll be honest... there are enough stories popping up about QC and customer service (and I'm only counting Wally's issue once!) that I wouldn't be willing to roll the dice with Kahr even if I did like the way it felt.

By Mag disconnect, you mean wont fire without mag, it (Shield) can be had both ways. Ditto for the safety. Mine has the safety, but will fire with no mag.

Opps, I guess Shipwreck already covered that bit....

When I bought my second pistol I got the lecture about how we should discuss any major purchases. After that I went to the don't as don't tell method. If she knew how many guns I have had over the years she would soil her panties. :)

Sorry about the health issues TarDevil. But I think I have the most supportive wife coming and going when it comes to guns. She has bought me several that I really wanted including some of the most expensive guns I own. I can always expect something nice under the Christmas tree and on my birthday. She lets me pick out what I want too which is the best way to do things. No mix ups that way. That's a pretty good arrangement IMO.

I can relate, broke mine in 2009, pain 24-7 since, people no doubt think we exaggerate the pain, best not to mention it as they will never know until it is their turn. The pain meds are no perk for me, I hate taking them with a deep passion, but am so glad for the way they let me work.
Pain meds sap my fervor for hobbies like shooting and flying, even for life itself. No one in their right mind would want to need to take them.

Tar Devil I totally understand. I've had 3 back surgeries and a neurostimulator in my spine. I've had 5 shoulder surgeries including 3 replacements. The last 2 were total reverse replacements (socket is attached to rod in my arm and the ball is attached to my scapula. I would love to have just ONE day without taking meds. But my son, daughter in law, grandson and wife all like to shoot so it becomes a family get together. I usually take one pill right before I go and one when I leave. My first hundred rounds are usually pretty accurate, then I get where I'm not as steady, so usually start with my 1911's, 45 and .38 Super@ about 15 yards. Then I move the target in and shoot my ccw (9mm Colt Defender) at about 20'. I figure i got a lot of lemons, I just learn to make lemonade.

Spent some time at the gun shop today. They didn't have a LC9s today, but were good enough to order one on their dime for me to look at, knowing that it was an 80% probability that I'll buy it once it comes in.

I looked at the old LC9 (just for feel and weight) beside the Shield and the the Sig P938.
The Sig was nice. I knew it would be. But I could buy two of the other guns for the price of the Sig. Can't justify it. Just isn't that much better. Back in the counter.

The Shield felt as good as I remember it in my hand. Nice sights. Trigger, though, didn't excite me at all. Not terrible, but certainly not on par with my SR9c. Again, as I stated earlier in this post, I'm only giving up 3 ounces by going to the Shield. I worry that in a short time carrying the gun I'm gonna feel the pain and regret laying out cash for a gun with marginal benefits in weight and (for me) a so-so trigger.

The LC9 didn't feel quite as natural in my hand as the Shield or my SR9c, but I like the weight, it pointed well, the sights are decent and easy to acquire, the safety had a nice tactile feel and it's non-ambidextrous (I consider that a plus after accidentally knocking off my SR9c a few times). I'm still not 100% committed to the gun... not until I get it in my hands and see how the LC9s trigger feels, but most likely my sweet wife will be buying it for me by next weekend.

Edited to add: Gets better... while we were there, my wife looked at and fell in love with a S&W 586! I ain't never letting her go!

What do you fellerz think of the M&P Shield chambered in .40 S&W?

Granted, that'd be a .5-inch longer barrel...

The 40 Shield?

I have one. I like it.

It can be a little snappy with upper end loads.

As far as carry goes, you won't know the difference between the 9.

Caliber wise - in real world situations, there isn't much difference between 9mm, 40 and 45. It's all shot placemen. Better to be able to be more accurate and fire faster with a 9mm, IMHO.

Lucky man. My wife rolls her eyes if I even mention I want another gun. The shield is one heck of a gun. I personally think the shield and the pps are the best sub compact pistols on the market, but the price difference is hard to ignore with the pps so I say the smith gives a better bang for buck as I see these go for like $350-375 often
