My wife and I have been there more than once.

You can't move. You go somewhere else, and a week later the scum move in again.

DO NOT MAKE FRIENDS WITH THEM. They need to know you're the guy who is quietly pleasant in passing but not interested in any kind of relationship. ("Mornin'" and in the door. "Afternoon" and in the car.) Then you're no threat, but you're not caught up in all their problems, either. You also "seem" to pay no attention to them. They'll ignore you, even when you lose patience and scream "Please stop!" one night.

Apartments generally have steel doors. Steel jams under the knobs (you can get them at Home Depot) and steel Jimmy Bars in the sliding doors make it hard for anyone to break in. If you don't know how to install Jimmy Bars, pay someone. Not the manager -- no reason to tell him even though you will drill holes into his property. Alternatively, just a wooden rod cut to fit so it jams the door shut from the inside -- that will do.

No one else does this. The point is that you no longer are an easy target. Any home invasions go to someone else's easy home. And believe me, they can and will kick in that industrial steel door if they want to.

Best advice from above is to drive to the police station and ask to speak with a narcotics officer. You might have to help a little, but you'll have some measure of control.

Finally, one the scum are out you need to make management aware of your displeasure so maybe, just maybe, they'll be more selective in the future.

I used to live off of Oltorf myself. It is a bad area. Most of the places look nice but looks are deceiving. When you do move find yourself a quiet area AWAY from college students. I have and man is my life a ton easier

My .02 cents if you’re not sure what to do or what can be done head down to the court house and dress nice and you will find a large number of APD standing around outside the doors waiting and willing to chat. I spent 3 days in court last week and was able to ask get a bunch of questions answered about some subjects I was curious about by these cops (my reason for court was because I filed assault on someone.)

Besides that go talk to a Narcotics officer. When you go to see a police officer and ask if they have free time they are usually very friendly. I always approached the officers I talked to at the court house with a Hello, if you have a minute mind if I ask you a few professional questions. 90 percent of the officers were willing to shoot the ..... err chat.

I had lots of problems with theft on Oltorf.. well where ever I go I get my stuff stolen. So hide it good… i.e. guns in a sofa sleeper… really nice spot to keep them stored if you don’t have a safe. Who would look under a chair or fold out a sofa bed to look for stuff. If its not in drawers or plain sight its going to be left behind.

Call CRIMESTOPPERS. Call them NOW.

They specialize in anonymous tips. Who knows there might even be a reward in it. I seriously doubt that all of these guys have clean records.
You don't know who you will be assisting the police to get off the streets.

Neighborhood dealers rarely go down without taking someone else with them. Many a large operation has been gotten to through small busts.

It is your civic duty to do what you safely can to stop this kind of criminal behavour.

Your landlord will let you out of your lease. The last thing they want is bad publicity about the safety of their property. But be careful, they just might be fully aware of the nefarious dealing going on there. That might be one of the reasons the rent is so cheap.

Thanks everyone! I had no idea to begin with that I would get this kind of support this quickly! After another sleepless night I decided I would go ahead and try to consult an officer on this, just asking hypothetical questions. "Lets say I knew where this drug dealer was, if you raid his place off my tip can he find out legally who blew the whistle?" I belive this route still leaves me with the most options.

I know in the comming weeks police action will be taken. I am planning on waiting for somone to move into the place next to the dealers before I talk with anybody however.

I have decided I am going to start carrying a folding knife I have in my back pocket for some peice of mind, although I don't really know how much good a shanking is going to do these guys, they are massive.

Well, I generally don't consider myself a racist, however how am I suppose to think of a person when I see you sell crack, you dress the way you dress, drink in excess outside, and you blast your music until 3AM? I doubt an officer would tell me if/when they were going to raid a place like that, but I would obviously like to be there when it happens. The greatest music in the world would be to hear "APD Search Warrent" followed by a few flash bangs. Thoes bastards need some temp. blindness for what they have caused me!

Assume the police take your word and have nothing better to do: here is what will happen:

The police will come and arrrest them if they dont have a lookout and flush the drugs before the police actually get into the place to find them.

If the police catch them with the drugs, they will be out on bail within 24 hours and looking for the NARC that turned them in. You will be their number one suspect from what you have said.

They will probably beat the crap out of you as a warning if they are in a good mood, if not they and their fellow gang members will probably shoot you in the back as you get out of your car one day.

You should call your parents and move out, dont spend another day there.
$750 is nothing compared to your life.

The police will not protect you I have been there (years ago) and I know.

The problem with staying there is that since you have reported that they give you the evil eye everytime they see you, that means that they are already suspicious of you. They may in a crack induced haze decide at 3:00 am one day that you are a threat to them and act accordingly. The other possibility is that they will get busted because one of their friends turned them in to save his own butt, and they may then decide to blame you for their misfortune.

I do not want to kill anyone, but if I feel my life is in danger I doubt the cost/benefit ratio will be popping into my head at the time. I have no criminal record and I doubt that a DA would prosucute me for protecting myself from a person in a crack induced rage.

Don't get me wrong, if a situation ever arose that we got into a scuffle, I would go into my place lock the door call the cops, and after that it's in the hands of the crack heads. If they decide to bust the door in and come after me so be it, but at that point they better have a body armor on....

I have had a similar problem in the past and have gone over to tell them to shut the stinking Bass off after work hours. If they played it during the day, I gave them a pass. When they disturbed my sleep, I had a major problem. Bass is non-directional and resonates far and wide. Get a Sub-Woffer and see.

Your neighbors don't have to be that close to cause a problem for you.

Because A. has already been answered pretty well. Even if by some unfortunate circumstance you have to pay big to break the lease, I can't imagine your parents wouldn't loan you the money. If they did they are either really, really poor or heartless bastards.

And B. seems rather trivial. I mean, on the one hand you've got the imminent possibility of death or disabling injury, coupled with being unable to sleep because of the music/stress. On the other you've got sitting in your car a few more hours every day. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

You havn't missed anything at all really, I would call that a pretty good summary of what is going on.

I have talked with my father today about this very issue, we are having dinner tonight and we are going to be discussing the issue in depth.
I personally do not have the money to break the lease and then move into another place. If the money is not there, there is nothing I can do short of robbing a bank.

I have mentioned this to my parrents before, actually right when the new guy moved in, their solution to it was basically go introduce yourself, bake them something, and ask them nicely.


They have never really had much expirence with these "parts of town". Where they live you could easily follow their advise, they just don't understand the cultural differences of this part of town. They are very trusting, and have a sort of "old country" attitude.

Your are dealing with the dregs of society. And they may be quite racist and will look for any chance or excuse to "off" whitey.

Any prison shrink will tell you that most of these kinds of people have at least two major defects of:

1. Impulsive behavior

2. Low threshold for frustration

Waffen, quit worrying about the money. You can get out of the lease with no penalty.
Ask a local lawyer for advice. Since the landlord is "allowing" this behavour to continue he is helping to create hostile/unhealthy living conditions.
The landlord will not want the adverse publicity that could arise if they attempted to prosecute you.

You worry should be about getting your belongings and yourself safely out of there. It's only a matter of time before someone gets hurt there. If you are already gone it won't be you.

Get OUT of there. Don't wait. Borrow money, or move in with your parents if you have to, but MOVE.
No security deposit is worth your life, and there's good chances you won't lose your security deposit anyway.

Tip the police? Sure, good idea, but FIRST get yourself OUT of there! You do NOT want to be around for the bust - if anybody sees you crack one smile, you've got a problem. Make it an anonymous tip.

Then AFTER the bust you can write the landlord explaining why you have to leave. The apartment manager knows who's dealing, so don't endanger yourself by talking to them again before you're out of there.
