I think and hope the gun control issue that may be empowered by the recent school shootings just "blows over". But, I don't expect it to just pass without some gun control legislation being introduced at the state and federal levels.
In PA, you say additional gun control won't happen because of a the hunters. Unfortunately, I think you are wrong as many hunters do not own AK47 or clones, SKS's, AR-15's or clones. The number of hunters is decreasing even in PA. To many, they just don't want their hunting rifles and shotguns further regulated. But they are comfortable with handguns and "black rifles" being licensed, registered, and in some cases banned from ownership. PA is getting more liberal all the time as each generation grows up and is taught the "violent nature" of firearms and not the legitimate use of firearms hunting, competing, self defense, or target shooting. They simply say that the world would be a better place without guns. Yes, I know, firearms are inantimate objects and have no natures.
Most knowledgeable people agree that the current laws would have had no effect on the Amish school shootings in Nickel Mines, PA. But, the media will play this to the hilt. It doesn't matter if the new laws have any effect on stopping such a random act. The anti-gun groups simply want guns outlawed in the US and any movement toward that objective is a win for them.
So, beware and be prepared for the laws that are introduced. You may need to periodically prove your need, your safe use, your proficiency, or your mental stability. It starts with registration and goes from there.
Anyone seeing a mental health professional could be banned from ownership etc. We don't want those kind of unstable people owning firearms..... the fact is that the majority could be considered or evaluated to be unstable.
You ever notice on the crime type TV shows that when a gun is used in a crime, the police immediately come up with information that the gun was or was not registered. After a while, people just start to accept that guns should be registered thinking that they already are or it is the norm.
Maybe these school shootings will start the gun debate as part of the upcoming elections in November??
