What are you looking for from the above parts list in a production "custom" 1911?

Please remember that your vote might make the difference in what a company is about to produce.

No MIM parts, impecable fit and finish, absolute reliablity.....Not that much. :neener:

I'm not surprised at the FLGR, but am surprised at the ambi vs standard saftey and the checkered vs non-checkered front strap results.

Dobe

Hmm... I've thought about this for a while, and still do think about how I want to build my "perfect" 1911.

*Les Baer 5" Government slide and frame
*Novak night sights (maybe the 10-8 sights, but haven't seen in person yet)
*Tripp hardchrome frame, polished blue slide flats with matte rounds
*French borders
*Flattened & Serrated slide top
*S&A magwell w. 30 lpi checkering
*30 lpi fronstrap checkering
*Ed Brown memory groove beavertail grip safety
*Dehorned edges
*radiused crown
*recessed slidestop pin
*Quality internals, either from C&S, EGW, Wilson, Baer or Brown
*Ext. strongside only thumbsafety
*GI rod and plug
*Kart Barrel
*30 lpi checkered mag release button
*Hakan Pek Desert Ironwood double diamond grips.
*Undercut trigger guard
*3.5 lbs trigger job

Pretty simple

How about beveling the mag well so that reloading is as easy as with any other pistol.

The only non-GI stuff I want is a lowered ejection port and an ambi-safety (I'm a lefty). The rest stays as JMB intended.

Everything on the list is pretty standard and can be had in at least some level from several companies. What a new entry will need to do is set their offering apart from everything else out there. Something NEW, not just a new wrapper on the same old 1911. Think about lightened slides, fiber optic sights, bull barrels in 5" guns, things like that.

If you want to sell a BUNCH of 'custom' production 1911's offer them in 9mm and 40 and make darn sure each one that leaves the plant runs right. There is a real market for them, and no one else is making consistently solid 9mm and 40's.

The only other way is to offer a really solid 1911 cheaper than Armscor and Taurus.

what im looking for , is adjustable sights

im going to replace the sights on my kimbers with adjustable sights. regular for the pro carry HD , and night sights for the Eclipse

I'm pretty specific in my 1911 tastes.......
Government Model (but I'll take a Commander or Officers.....)
single sided narrow extended thumb safety
Ed Brown grip safety, no speed bump
standard slide stop
fixed sights, Novaks, GI or the Yost Retro
barrel bushing
serrated front strap
flat mainspring housing
long trigger, no take-up, no creep, 3-4 pounds
GI guiderod/recoil spring plug
dehorn
accurate
reliable
Not necessarily in that order.

Some things such as lowered and flared ejection ports, various finishes, forward slide serrations, etc.....I can take or leave. 45ACP, but 9mm is nice too. Muzzlebrakes, porting, and that kind of stuff is definitely out for me though.

Oh......and I like a little pony on it....;)

I'll mention too.......what is selling quicker than production can keep up with is Colt's repro M1911. An accurate reproduction of a M1911 at the $500-600 price point would be a sure winner. Who needs another off the shelf "custom" gun?

Hi,

The poll failed to specify the reasons for the new 1911. My answers would vary hugely between a CCW gun (a lightweight "officer's" size) and a full-size steel 5" gun to "play" with in competitions.

This is my current CCW 1911, a first edition Ultra CDP. Utterly reliable and very accurate, it has EXACTLY what I'd want in a 3" gun . . . EXCEPT . . .

MY ONLY WISH . . .being left handed, I'd love my CCW 1911 to NOT have the left side safety!

Yep! Imagine the typical right-handed bad guy wrestling a 1911 away from a lefty and have to way to fire it without taking a while to figure it out! LOVE THAT CONCEPT . . . and it might just save a lefty's life!

MY NEXT 1911 . . .

It is about time to replace my old Colt "Combat Elite" competition 1911 . . . a heavily customized one that's got a lot of miles on it. For this gun:

1. Bomar-style competition sights

2. Full-length guide rod

3. 2 1/2 lb. trigger, max (the Colt is a "tad" light at 1 1/2! )

4. Ambi, of course, for I'm a lefty

5. Checkered front strap (the Kimber Ultra CDP has spoiled me . . . I used skateboard tape on the Colt)

6. Extended Mag-well . . . something I would NOT want on a CCW gun

7. Extended competition slide release . . . again, different from the CCW gun

8. A SET OF DIFFERENT WEIGHT RECOIL SPRINGS . . . for shooting powderpuff-downloaded 200 gn. LSWC for practice as well as the hot stuff for IPSC, etc.

9. I like the duo-tone look of the Combat Elite . . . beautifully polished stainless steel frame . . . and a gorgeous mirrored BLUE slide with a matte top.

Naturally, it would need a match-grade barrel and slide lock up for great accuracy . . . as well as be totally dependable.

T.

Note: I did not vote in the poll, for WHO can be happy with just one variant of a 1911!!!;)

I prefer paper punching with mine. An extended mag release, safety & slide stop, adjustable sights, wilson V-MSH and Wilson mag well all help. For CCW you probably want a 3"-4" with melted controls and night sights

I shoot my 1911s first and then make changes accordingly. My XSE needed a few changes but my CBOB needede more polishing & tweaking.

The poll failed to specify the reasons for the new 1911.

The reason is that we are about to roll out our first production model 1911 and I was looking for input to validate our ideas.

So far it has been really insightful. Keep the suggestions coming!

(but we need to have it wrapped up by the 10th, when we go into production.)

i voted, i like the fact of only having a left sided safety, but that is just personal preferense but i am right handed so that does have something to do with it. some might argue that the ambi is good in case someone else is using your pistol, but that is unlikly the fact, and i don't know many people that are left handed and in a situation where they would be using my gun they probally wouldn't be using my 1911!

i do like night sights and as long as they were 3 dot types i would be very very happy.

i think all pistol makers should come with 3 magazines the more the marrier!:)

Production custom

Usually includes things people don't want, but take to get the things they do. FLGR's are a classic example. Here's my "dream pistol". In fact, I just FedEx'ed the gun and a bag of parts to Deezulsmoke today.

Forged frame and slide. My G.I. was offered up for this build.
Tool steel internals. I went with Ed Brown parts. Hammer, sear, disconnector, ejector, extractor.
Beavertail grip safety. S&A with speedbump
Checkered MSH (S&A, also) and frontstrap, 20LPI.
Yost/Bonitz retro rear sight
Millet flourescent orange front sight
Bevel magazine well
Four pound trigger job
Tune and time everything to run correctly, not just run.

For about the same money as an off the shelf gun close to what I want, I'm getting exactly what I want in a carry gun, no more. no less.

Start with JMB's design. GI Spec spring steel extractors, machined internals, all made to blue print specs, with exception for hammer spurs to fit beavertails.. Frame to original blue print specs, with exceptions for a beavertail to prevent hammer bite/grip safety bite, and forged stainless or carbon steel as material.

- Beavertail grip safety for higher grip, and reasons stated above, plus no speed / memory bump.
- Commander Style Hammer for above reasons.
- Narrow Extended thumb safety, not ambi; standard GI is also fine though.
- Plain Front Strap - That lets the customer decide on leaving plain, checkering, serrations, stippling, what LPI for the first two, etc.
- Fixed Sights - plain Novaks, Heinies, other low profile, I'm not real picky if its a quality sight set. I'd not complain if night sights in same styles were standard though.
- GI Style plug and short rod for easy disassembly, this is a fighting pistol.
- Slotted convex grip screws so I can turn them with a case head to disassemble the pistol since it is its own toolbox.
- GI Spec magazines to the letter. Search 1911Tuner's post "Magazine Observations" in Gunsmithing and you'll see why I'm sold. I'd prefer three magazines with the pistol.
- 4 & 1/4" true commander length prefered, 5" Gov't length would be my second choice.
- Keeping with the fighting pistol theme, brushed or blasted stainless, parked carbon, or melonite qpq type on stainless or carbon for durable finishes.

I think that's all.

To come clean, what we're looking at producing is:

5" steel slide
steel frame
20 lpi front strap
20 lpi mainspring housing
beveled mag well
three dot night sights
all tool steel internals (no MIM or funny "toaster parts.")
Three dot night sights
GI recoil assembly
Micarta grips
Three tuned to the gun magazines
Kart barrel
Kart bushing
Steel safety
Steel beavertail
Slotted grip screws (it's the little things that count)

Pricing has not been announced, but I'm about 99% sure it will be under $1200.00 to the consumer

Beavertail, night sights (nice ingredient, not mandatory), and definitely add spare mags. How about a full cleaning kit - minus, of course, the chemicals for the job. Complete instructions on cleaning in the manual would be nice, too, for those who don't know much about it.

Green Furniture, sounds like a whole lotta no non-sense 1911. Price looks very good for the specs.

The Kart barrel is an excellent choice. It will set the gun apart from the rest, as long as you can keep the price right.
