I bougt it, i shot it, i loved it.

cz sp01 phantom:

looks: 9/10, 10 being perfect. i find the glock ugly, although i like it because it goes bang even if you put it in mud. but then i want a gun with both substance and form. beauty and brains. the phantom has both.

muzzle flip: are you kidding me? miniscule, comparable to shadow.

recoil: again are you kidding me? on a 9mm? with long dust cover?

transitions: better than the shadow. just a bit.

accuracy: just like shadow. groupings are tight. sometimes i shoot over other shots i made.

price: cheaper than the shadow.

weight: light, can be carried the whole day. try carrying the shadow all day and you'll see the difference.

trigger: da/sa- d.a. a bit heavy for comfort at first. constant dry firing cured it. s.a. is sweeeeeeeeet.

future mods: planning to change some springs, remove firing pin block, trigger job, fiber optic sights, novak style rear, competition hammer, cz 85 combat trigger, etc. but since i won in a competition using it, i'm thinking why fix something that a'int broke. but then again why not?

defense: yes can be carried all day. 19 + 1. yes it's 19 + 1. constant use of the mags will lighten the springs and you'll be able to squeeze 1 more bullet into it.

competition: just won using it. bested some who were using tanfoglio stock II, cz shadow, standard, tactical, cz 75, 85, glock 17, 19, jericho, beretta, sig sauer.

recommend to buy?: absolutely

pictures to follow.

I hope to shoot mine the first time this week. I find the decocker to be a bit stiff. Hopefully that will ease up a bit with use. Same with the trigger. I can't recall, is the gun meant to be 19+1, or does it just work out that way as the mag spring breaks in?

A - decockers don't really do anything for me and on my USP it's a decocker and a safety.

B - I can't say that a polymer frame CZ does anything for me either but perhaps I'll feel differently after I handle one.

That's one thing I love about CZ though - they have something for everyone!

Thanks for posting the review, I am curious to see one in person.

Now the SHADOW...

@ atblis:

hi. long dust cover, 9mm, polymer frame, steel slide, excellent grip, 1911like beavertail equals miniscule muzzle flip. it's comparable to shadow. i didn't say less than. though transition between targets or target acquisitions are better than the shadow because of the lighter weight. anyway don't take my word for it. go get one or better still rent one first. thanks.

oh sorry about that. i should have said very small or better still negligible. my bad.:)

Actually, I think punctuation was too hard for the OP. However, t was pretty obvious what he meant. Maybe this would have helped:

muzzle flip: are you kidding me? miniscule; comparable to shadow

With a weapon this light with that magazine capacity it will be very tempting for military contracts. The gun is so light for its size that it's like it's hardly even there.

I hope to shoot mine this week.

Great review, but that thing looks humongous...! Thinking about one, but with such small hands, seems like it's beefy grip makes me reconsider.

zplug123,

If the Shadow is dimensionally the same as the SP-01, the grip circumference should not be a problem. My hands are medium+ and my SP grip with the Hogue finger groove rubber grips is almost to small. The mag extension makes the gun look bigger than it is. I use standard CZ mags in my SP.

Any-who, the Shadow and SP series are probably some of the best range guns ever. Throw in a comp hammer (on the non-decocoker versions) and you've got a world class pistol. Love my SP-01.

Doesn't the Phantom have an interchangeable backstrap?

...if i had to buy a 9...

it would be this one.

Darn, she´s a fugly beauty.

This one is the brand spanking new SP-01 variant in polymer, the "original" is all metal and sturdy and heavy enough to beat a medium sized bear to death with if you run out of ammo.....

I love my SP-01

yup, it has an interchangeable backstrap for smaller hands. it basically has the same dimension as the all-steel cz sp01 variants, specifically, the sp-01 tactical. i've held the shadow, standard, tactical, and phantom at a gunshow. all of them fit nicely in my small to medium hands. sp-01's are really not that big. one thing i notice though is the phantom's lighter weight at 800 grams. that did it for me. i also like the phantom's trigger guard better than the curved ones. same with its picatinny rail.

here are some pictures of the phantom i found in the internet that better capture its true beauty. it's actually better looking in person. imo, even better looking than the steel variants....... ok i'm biased. :D
i believe some of these are from CZF's website. i think i posted them already before, but for those who have not seen them yet, enjoy.:)
