To Daniel/Australia

Excellent information. Now, take the second step and boil it all down to one simple short sentence.

Some things don't lend themselves well to boiling down beyond a certain point, but how about this:

"Steel springs, of whatever configuration, do not simply "lose tension" as a result of use within proper design limits, regardless of the duration or number of loading cycles, despite the view to the contrary widely held in the gun world."

By way of example, look at valve springs in a typical car engine, which undergo more loading cycles in an hour of running than any spring in a firearm will undergo in its service life, and keep on doing the job for millions of cycles and years under load, usually until the engine is no longer serviceable.

BTW I did enjoy your blog, and will look forward to your next quiz :)

I got 8 out of 10.

Missed the handgun sight question and the flat vs coiled spring question :banghead:

9/10, there were some lucky guesses though. like figuring a 7mm was a little to big for a .220, the automatic revolver. i actually almost went 10 for 10 but the "no one knows" just seemed like it wanted to draw us in. fell for it :p
not worth bragging though since it was luck ;)

I got 8/10. I was thinking the 1928 Thompson and was thinking the gun act was 1929 or 1930 too close to the date to actually buy one before the legislation took place. Turns out it was 1934. Missed the spring question too. Everything I have read about coil springs seems to tout them as being longer lasting and better etc. vs. flat springs. Oops.

7/10, for me. I came into it thinking "Hah, a gun quiz? I'll ace this in a second flat", but... actually kinda challenging. Good quiz.

8 of 10. Curse the .220 Swift and Invincible questions... Those are a little to obscure for me.

Welcome to THR, Mr. Petzal. I hope you'll find a number of friendly discussions here.

I got 8 of 10.

I don't know crap about .220 swift or flat springs.

ditto... I almost got the spring one right but I second guessed myself. As for the rest, I really don't know that much about guns but I've gotten good at selecting the right answer in multiple choice questions.

Correct! The answer is A, true.
Your final score is: 8 out of 10
Details: The Mars Automatic Pistol was invented in England in 1900, and was a recoil-operated arm that was configured like a revolver, cylinder and all. It was monstrously large, very powerful, and highly complex. Only about 80 were made, and are valuable collectors' items today.

How the crowd answered:
True or false: There is such a thing as an automatic revolver.
A: True 61.9%
B: False 38.0%

3589 people have answered this question.

Darn flat spring, and rimfire priming compound.

How many people got the spring question "wrong", when in fact it is the answer given by Mr Petzal which is wrong!

And as well as the question about the number of "Invincibles" known there's the question about automatic revolvers: there are such creatures,so answer A is right, but the Mars wasn't one of them: it was a long recoil design with a rotating cylindrical bolt, not a rotating cylinder, and it fed from a detachable box magazine inserted in the butt, which is shown withdrawn in this photo:
