Got a dead NM Single Six last week or so.
Shop got it, didn't want to send it back, cut me a deal.
Popped the grips..........somebody had left a home made pin in hammer strut.
It was stuck, but a proper punch and a couple taps got it out.

Hmmm, cylinder free spins.
Pulled apart, latch spring mangled, no plunger.
Got new, still no go.....uh, hammer plunger broken.....missing busted off piece.
Got new one...........won't cock. Too long. Have no idea how long it should be.

What is proper length? Guess there are different plunger pin locations.
Not much help on web, dimension wise. Found one post w measurments.

So looked for a used hammer on auction site.
Lo and behold there's one like mine, w plunger and pin location same.
I grind mine some and put in hammer. Looks long. Try again. close but maybe too long.
Remembering the dim I pulled off the web.........I'm thinking "that'd be too short".
So decided to go a bit more and test.
Latch pops up about half way in scallop of cylinder.

So I have a .22 mag (only one cylinder) NM blued 5.5" Single Six for about 180 bucks.

That’s a deal. Good for you. It’s got wood grips too, much nicer than the black plastic mine came with. Cylinders are cheap enough. Usually the mag cylinders pop up loose on auctions, but if you wait it out you can get a LR cylinder or just buy one from Numrich. Well done.

Whoever had it before, took anodizing off rear frame screw areas, using wrong screwdriver. Got some marks around trigger pivot pin (other side). Didn't use a brass punch.
I could sand them all away with minimal effort. And aluminum black the frame at the screw holes.
But the steel frame would need reblue.
Never have had good luck w cold blue.........even when properly degreased and parts warmed up.
Really, this would be a great candidate for cerakote.
But I have no history with this gun, and really no use.
Bought it to maybe shoot a coyote with it closer range, or have for as trapline rig.
I'd rather have the adj sighted Bearcat for that.

It sounds like the previous owner was fanning. Thats the only thing i know that will do that to a NMSS.

Nice job with the rescue operation and for $180! Can't go wrong there!

Bought it to maybe shoot a coyote with it closer range, or have for as trapline rig.

A buddy of mine gave me his old Single Six which he use to take along when he was checking his trap lines. It cleaned up nicely and I eventually found some decent grips and also added a .22 Magnum cylinder.

A great gun with a lot of character to it!

Love the SS. I've got both a new and old model (unmolested) and a 4" 50th anniv. model. My favorite though is the bisley in 32 HR mag with birdshead grips.

They are some of my favorite shooting 22s. Great trapline guns.

Nice rig! My first handgun was an OM .22 mag like that (5th grade) :)

The free spinning was because the latch wouldn't come up, as the spring was crunched and no plunger on it LOL. (whoever took it apart lost it).
The pawl plunger and spring were put in backwards.
And the hammer plunger busted.
Got some dings where it was worked on before I got it.
I took it apart and hit it w 1000 grit, warmed with torch and applied cold blue a couple of times.
Got the worst offenders about 50% gone, was right on lettering, which IMHO made it too annoying.
Doesn't look too bad.
Its got holster wear and some other dings.

Not worth sending back for reblue, put me in th cost of a clean one (or more).
I'm OCD enough I might trade it off and get a like new one later, or stainless.

Must admit, the SS is better for target/hunting.............but the adj sighted Bearcat is just adorable.

I didn't know how easy or tough it'd be..........or if the prev owner messed up hammer/trigger etc.
Could have been a 5 dollar fix or a 150 dollar.
Rolled the dice.
Eh, kept me entertained for a bit, learned something new (about hammer plungers).
So if somebody else has a prob, I might be able to give them some decent info.
