I found a discontinued single shot 410 that’s perfect for my girls. It’s “used” but barely. My girls have been begging me for a shotgun, so I headed to the counter… and got delayed. 2nd time in my life to be delayed, and the first time was about a week ago on a stripped revolver frame. Just my luck…

I have only not been delayed once, possibly twice. The other 12+ times, delayed. It is quite irritating. I never went to gun shows with the expectation of walking out with a gun unless it was a private sale because those events are a day long, 2 days at most and my delays were usually 3 days long.

Had a Rossi Matched pair .22/410 looked a lot like that, different stick though. Fun little gun, hope they wnjoy it when you get it.

I wonder if wrongfully delayed folks could file a class action suit against those doing the delaying. If the government insists on viopthe second amendment they should at least do it accurately.

Contact the BATF and apply for a UPIN number. Your info may be similar to someone else.

Man you got it easy I live in DC and there is a registration scheme. Best case scenario is 10 days but my new .308 I bought a about 2 weeks ago is lookin at 30 days minimum due to the office of firearm registration being behind. From the way they were talking it may even be pushing the 60day statutory maximum.

I would love to only need to wait 3days :(

I’ve had my eye on a S&W Model 17-8 at the LGS, went in two days ago, gave the clerk my CCW & Credit Card, filled out the paperwork and left with it. Total time, start to finish, 15-20 minutes, tops.

That’s the norm for me. My last 2 transfers have been rough though.

I got a green light this morning so I can go get it, but it’s an hour away and I drive by there every weekday with my new job so I will get it Monday.

Monday is turning into new toy day for me. Trading in my gas getter for a gas guzzler. It’s a wrangler rubicon that’s built like a brick outhouse. Bad backstory on the Jeep so I’m getting it cheaper than I should and anywhere outside of the town it’s in it will double in value. I will keep it a bit and flip it for a profit in the spring.

Dang! And I thought 10 day wait for CA was bad ...

Congrats! Always good to pick up any firearm ...

More fun! :D

I have a soft spot for 4x4s and thought about doing late 60s IH Scout 80/800 as retirement project (Had a 74 Scout II). Long story short and our 97 4x4 suburban is being PIF to a needy young family (Wife is happy with Ram crewcab 4x4) and wife gave me the green light to pursue an early 70s Ford van project (Should have kept the 71 4x4 Ford van) as a van conversion/camper.

I did test drive a 2021 Jeep Gladiator with EcoDiesel and liked it. But it was too nice to take it hard fourwheeling offroad ... :p

Make sure to always include your SSN.

Get a Upin.

Include your full middle name.

Have patience. Realize there are a ton of new gun owners and many similar names. A delay is no big deal, why get worked up over something you can’t change? Anyway, they’re legally allowed to transfer the gun to you after 3 days on delay.

I went through 50 BC's without a hitch. Then 51, 52, 53 all were delayed. Did not buy anything else with a BC for a few years. Then earlier this year, went through no problem. I always did use SS number and full middle name every time. All delays through a different dealer each time too. Gives one pause but probably they are busy and someone with a similar name was a problem so more checking was involved. At least private sales in state are not regulated here yet.

How does a person know they are "wrongfully delayed"?
And what makes you think they aren't doing it accurately?

FBI NICS background checks that result in a "delayed" response just means the FBI needs additional time to research the buyer/transferee. When the background check is run against several databases, a search often has multiple peoples records match or closely match the buyers name and descriptive information. Some of those records are not immediately available to the FBI.

If you don't like the NICS system, just lobby your Congressman to go back to how it was before NICS.

I don't think you know what a "UBC" is.;)

I mean in all seriousness the NICS system is outdated. If we are going to keep it around we should probably fund it to bring it up to modern standard's. or ya know get rid of it... but if we are not going to do that at least update it so it can handle it's job

Are you a gun dealer? I ask because if you are you likely wouldn't say that. I have daily interactions with FBI NICS both by phone and eCheck. I've found the FBI NICS staff efficient and polite to a fault. And what do you mean by "bring it up to modern standards"? :scrutiny: Do you have any clue how "modern" they really are?

In all seriousness........the NICS system works. It may not work as perfectly or as fast as some would like but for 99.9% of transactions it works exactly as its supposed to. There are 333 million people in the US and guess what..........many of them have the same or similar name and running a background check may have dozens of records return.....some with prohibiting information. Couple that with records that states have not forwarded to the FBI and the FBI NICS Examiners have to work pretty fast.

I do 2000 transfers a year. About 75% are NICS exempt because the buyer holds a Texas LTC. The other 25% I call in or use eCheck. Maybe one out of twenty will get a delay and most of those are a proceed within 24hrs. In the last year I've had two denials, both related to immigration status.

I almost always get delayed on my NICS checks. I have a very common FN and LN. 10 years ago, on a busy gun show day in my state of Virginia, that often meant several hours and often "we'll, I'll be back tomorrow"as it would almost always get approved first-thing the next business day. It got much better, at best, delays were more like 15-30 minutes. Once or twice it was as little as 5 minutes. However, most recently, they've crept back up and my last one took over an hour.

Virginia is a POC (point of contact) state, meaning gun dealers don't contact FBI NICS directly, but a state agency (who in turn accesses FBI NICS).
State POC's are saddled with a fixed # of staff, whereas FBI NICS has multiple call centers that have staggered operating times. It is very rare that FBI NICS doesn't answer the call by the 3rd ring. Black Friday and Saturday were/are notorious for being on hold.

I have two major advantages:
1) I have a very rare (if not unique) middle name... .
NICS uses a search engine that includes close and inexact name searches. Running a BG check on "Michael John Waldo Jr." may return records for:
Michael John Waldo
Mykel John Waldo
Micheal John Waldo
Michael Jon Waldo
Michael Johann Waldo
Michael John Waldo II

If one of those other Waldo's  is a prohibited person, the NICS customer service rep will tell the dealer "NTN number XXX12345 is delayed while NICS conducts additional research. The Brady Law does not prohibit you from transferring the firearm on XX/XX/XXXX." The date they tell the dealer is not three days, but three business days beginning the next business day and does not include weekends, holidays or days state offices are not open. So that "three day delay" could be a week.

Even having a UPIN does not guarantee an immediate "proceed" response from NICS.

There are a whole lotta Texans that think our recent constitutional carry law means they have no need for a License To Carry.......they'll be surprised to learn otherwise.
