Oh Hi Oh
I've been shooting for almost 7 years. I got delayed for the 1st time in my life today while making a purchase. Over the years I've bought a lot of guns. I've also sold and traded a lot of guns to fund new purchases. I buy something, get bored with it or find I don't like it, sell it....sort of recycling my money. It's one of my hobbies. Every firearms transaction that I've made has been by the book, 150% legal.

I've been given 3 possible explanations for the delay; 1) I'm on record "somewhere" as buying too many guns, 2) something about me popped up in the NICS database, I'm likely to be approved but should expect to be delayed from this point forward, 3) none of the above, it's just a fluke.

:cuss:

Feedback?

Thanks!

Who knows, I've been buying guns since 1972 and I've been delayed 3 out of the past 6. They all went through in an hour or two.

John

if it's because you're buying too many guns, that it's a sad state of affairs. i think they destroy the record at NICS after 24 or 48 hours. so unless you're buying them that often, its'n not it.

They always say, "just a minute" on mine and then it goes through. I have bought 7 or 8 handguns in the last 6 to 8 weeks and so far so good.

I was in a revolver mood and my "gun stuff" kitty was fat. (was fat, now it's downright anemic) :)

I had a similar experience last fall. The TBI was given my SSN, address, and all sorts of other info, and because I share my birth date with two other fella, in other parts of the state and share my last name, I had to prove I was not them by contacting a sheriff's dept. who'd never met me.

I thought this was just plain hilarious,...insulting, but hilarious in a "what are these fruitcakes doing?" kind of way. :)

My experiences....

My purchases are always bounced up to a supervisor, because of my name which is "initials only".

So we have learned to make the calls early in the morning on the West coast, so that we catch the supervisor back at their desk shortly after lunch. Any other time and the purchase goes on hold, until we call in again while the supervisor is at their desk.

Be safe, BSR

It's NOT because you have gotten to many guns. It could be someone with similar height.weight.social.name has recently gotten into trouble, if thats the case be prepared everytime from now on. My guess, however, is that the person doing the check is just a dataminer. Someone who puts your info in but has no say in yes or no. They seem to do this with new hires.

First time in 7 years? Shoot, I get delayed 80+% of the time, and since I haven'y gotten an immediate proceed in the last half-dozen straight, the percentage just keeps increasing...

Delayed could also mean the person running the checks needs to use the rest room. If you don't have a very common name the correct answer to your question is #3, fluke.

I don't have a common name and have been delayed for about 15 minutes. I asked my dealer about thsi and he told me it happens. He told me he had a State Police Sargeant that works at the NICS section come back delayed and had to wait 30 minutes.

I believe your FFL should have given you a little brochure, something along the lines of the "Gun Buyers Resolution Guide" or some such title published by the ATF/NICS folks along with the control number for the delay. IIRC the brochure spells out the procedure for requesting, in writing, the reasons why the NICS examiner decided to delay you. Every time I buy a gun I always get "bounced up" to the supervisor level, as soon as the supervisor gets my info a proceed is issued. I'd love to know why I always get bounced up, but as I understand it until I actually get a delay I can't request the reason. I wouldn't take it as a personal affront, but you should probably try to get the reason and then get that resolved.

I've never been not delayed :cuss: luckily never been rejected too. But that's why I love private party FTF.

Never been delayed, other then the waiting periods in those states that had them. Last four NICS checks took all of about a minute each and out the door I went with my new firearm. Should go smoother once I get my CWP, no check needed then.

I got delayed for 3 hrs on my last one. Turns out my security clearence had expired earlier that week. No fact behind this, just what we all came up with as the best explanation. The dealer I was at said that sometimes it just happens, security clearances expiring were the two best explanations he had to offer.

I've been delayed a few times - but not lately. From what I can tell, my purchases have to go past the first level to a second level person who looks a little deeper to find that I have not broken (many) laws in the past 34 years.
("youthful experimentation" violation in 1973)

I got delayed recently, was told it was a CNA or some term like conditional non approval. More and more my local gun dealer has said he has been receiving these on people. Not sure why though. It took about 4 hours for it to come back clean.

I have been buying firearms since the summer of 1969, with NO problem;
and I have NEVER been delayed. Might be cuz of my (former) LEO status,
or the fact that I always provide my social security number~? ;) :D

Thats a personal identification number which is optional; but I have NO
problem with that, as the FED's have it anyway. Heckfire, they can get
it off of anyone's federal tax (1040) form; so why not comply with the
4473~? :scrutiny: :)

Not been delayed to date, however not that many dealer purchases either. See if it happens again and if it doesn't, it was probably a fluke, if it does then I'd get the ATF on the line and ask why you were delayed.

"I always provide my social security number"

I do too.

Maybe if I'd quit buying guns at 4 p.m. on the day before Thanksgiving or late Saturday afternoon there wouldn't be a delay.

John

i put my ss because i have a cousin with the exact same name, and i don't want it to be an issue. it's caused drama at the hospital, so im guessing it will also elsewhere in my life

while using my SS, i've never had a problem.

I bought a milsurp rifle Monday and was delayed about 30 minutes.
The dealer said the lady he was speaking to said she was new and the puters were running slow. I was sure glad it went through as I had driven over an hour to get to this gun shop. It was a little nerve wracking standing around waiting for Big Brother to call back.

What I figured was that I had reached my limit on gun purchases before red flags and buzzers pop off, I am not paranoid though ;)

I was delayed for three days on the last one I bought. I left off my SSN.
Every other purchase I've done I included it and was never delayed.

I was delayed last year in getting my Iowa purchase permit for almost 2 weeks when it usually takes 3 or 4 days. My life is about as clean as it gets, but my sons isn't. He was involved in a serious federal drug charge mess and his name was attatched to our address, so I'm sure I was run through the mill! :fire: Have any of you ever raised (or tried to raise) one of these children from hell? Just wondering. This year I had the permit again in 3 days. :D
