I stopped by my favorite gun store today just to say hello and wish them a Happy New Year and to look around......well there in the display case was a Colt 1911A1, Gold Cup, National Match, 70 Series in as new condition, I examined the pistol and could not find a blemish/scratch or wear on it.......I don't think there has been more than a dozen rounds put thru it......beautiful pistol.
Price $1000........I bought it on the spot. So what do you guys think.......did I get burned on the price????

Well - who cares what others think? If you think you got a good deal then you got a good deal - that's really all that matters.

The nice thing about value is that it is relative. Personally I wouldn't pay a plugged nickel for a 1911A1 Colt model 70 - I'm not a big Colt fan. Does that matter? HELL no! The value of that pistol became $1000 the minute you purchased it.

If someone says you were a chump and paid $200 too much are you gonna take it back? I'd certainly hope not. If someone says that the dealer screwed himself are you gonna go back there and gloat? Of course not.

What matters is you were excited to get that pistol for the price you paid so you got a good deal no matter how you look at it.

Enjoy your new Colt...
Screw what anyone else thinks (including me - :D)

That's a nice Christmas present, DorGunR! Congratulations on a nice piece! :D

Here's a picture of my Series 80 GC.

You got screwed, blued and tattoo'd! You WAY over paid!

But, just because I'm a nice guy and want to ease your pain....

I'll give you $900 for it right now.

Don't wait! Email me quick!!

:D  :neener:

That price is not too far out of line for a like-new Gold Cup.

But the point is that the gun was there, you were there, and the price was OK. If you had waited to ask on the net, I might have said the price was high, but someone else could have bought it while you were asking and you would have nothing.

Greeting's DorGunR My Friend-

I'm so sorry that you lost all that money on such a P.O.S.:D

A matter of fact, that POS is so sorry I think you just
ought to will it too me!;) I promise to take really good
care of it. (LOL)

In reality, you did well. Those things are getting really
hard to come by these day's. Congrat's my friend-
enjoy

Hey Big G- mighty nice looking piece of weaponary
their pal. Can I try it out when I come over I try out the
Griz?

DorGunR, the price paid is all relative...to be sure, some know-it-all will post a "story" that he got the same thing for half the price! Then you know you got a good deal!

True enough - true enough ......... price is oh so relative. On paper .. and I ain't no 1911 expert at all ....... seems a tad high.

But hell ... you have done what I have before at times ..... ''I WANT'' ...... ''MUST GET'' .... not knowing when another opportunity will present. And bottom line is ..... as you drool and fondle ..... if you feel that your outlay was justified then ..... be damned with what ANYONE else thinks!

I am pleased for you Sir. Enjoy to the fullest extent possible.

I have sold my mint Series 80 Gold Cup National Match with extra wrap around rubber grips and 3 std. magazines for 950 3 years ago. I think you did good!

I paid a heckuva lot less, but then again, that was ten years ago. I think you paid a fair price.

In The People's Republic Of Maryland, you paid a fair price.

Move to Pennsylvania for less culture, lower taxes, better gun laws, and significantly lower handgun prices!

The fair price of any goods or services are exactly the amount agreed upon by the interested parties. Nothing more, nothing less.

You did well and got the firearm for exactly what it was worth.

Have fun.

Good shooting.

If a person has a grand that they can lay down on the spot... I don't think it's going to hurt too much.

Buy it, shoot it, be glad you got it.

Those critters are hard to find nowadays, especially in "like new" condition. If the price you paid was within your means then enjoy your new shootin' iron. I have a Gov. model 80 IV and I love mine.

"In The People's Republic Of Maryland, you paid a fair price. "

You said it brother. MD. prices are normally at least 10% higher than most states.

DorGunR, I'm pretty sure I know where you bought it, and I would trust them as well.

Heck....you stopped in to wish them a Happy New Year, so I would hope that they treated you right!

Maybe we'll see it at the next Maryland THR get-together...

DorGunR, I'm pretty sure I know where you bought it, and I would trust them as well.

Spot77.......you guessed right, I bought it at Scotts in Glen Burnie. He also has a Browing A5, Belgium made in 16 gauge but he's holding in the back room for an old customer that collects them.;)

Real answer...

I think you want is "what is the going price???"

Local dealer here has one exactly as you describe. $1,200. Won't budge...says he'll get it within a month or maybe two. Series 80 go for about $800

You did OK. You might have saved a hundred IF you could find someone that was really hard up and IF you were willing to wait years

Reminds me of the older guy that came into the store the other day to sell some guns...among which was an unfired original Series 70 Government model, collet bushing and all, in the original box, with the toe tag still attached.

It's sitting on the shelf now for $799...which is precisely $789 more than I can afford right now.

:banghead:

DorGunR,
Personally I think you did very well. Lets face it ,they aren't making these fine firearms any more, and the value is only going to go up.
I have a collection of .45's and as far as I'm concerned there's no substitute for the ''real steel" feel of a good ol .45. Enough of us carried them in the military. They worked then, and they work now.
Just go out, buy some 230 gr ball ammo and shoot it until you can't wipe that grin off your face. That in itself is worth the $1000.00 bucks you paid for it.
''ENJOY'' and stay safe

SILENT ONE

The (24th ediion) Blue Book value for a 100% MKIV/Series 70 Gold Cup National Match in .45 ACP is $1150. In 98% condition it values at $895.

That's how Gold Cup's usually go for in my area, so, no you didn't get burned at all, IMO. It wasn't a great buy, I'de say its a fair deal. Enjoy!

Gentlemen.......thanks for all the replies. I felt the 1K price was a fair one but I wanted to ask the "Pros".........you guys.
The pistol was on consignment and there was no wiggle room from the dealer whom I know and trust. This is my 5th 1911 and I know I will still be looking for more.:D
Thanks again for your replies and have a very Happy Ney Year.;)

A "good deal" is where the buyer and the seller both are both satisfied. If you're happy and the seller is happy, who cares what anybody else thinks?

Cost is very relative. I don't know your age (I'm 50) but I look at cost this way. If I see a gun I really like, I know I'll probably have it for the rest of my life.If I take that gun to the range and put a box or two of ammo thru it every week for the next 20 years, the guns cost is very low.
20 years X 52 weeks=1020 range sessions
1020 range sessions divided by $1000= $1.02 per week
What else can you do that gives as much pleasure and satisfaction for a dollar? :D
Shoot well and often.
