What modern or otherwise autoloader would Dirty Harry carry if he was on the force today?

OP assumes two things:

1. That Dirty Harry would be tolerated on a modern police force;
2. That Dirty Harry would carry an autoloader at all.

Neither are true, methinks :)

edit; although he did have a .44 automag, so I guess anything's possible... that being the case, I'd say he would opt for a 10mm Auto.

The .44 mag is still a pretty intimidating piece of equipment. I think he'd do just fine with it today. But wouldn't be able to say it's the most powerful.....so he might have to go with the .500 just for that reason. If it's an autoloader it has to be a big gun....something like a desert eagle. A 10mm is a pretty powerful round for a service pistol but to someone who doesn't know firearms, it just looks like everything else.

He used a big stainless 44 Auto Mag in Sudden Impact. Pretty intimidating hand cannon.

Schwarzenegger used a Russian hand cannon in Red Heat. I just did some googling and came up with this tidbit.

Ivan Danko (Schwarzenegger) uses a gun called "Podbyrin 9.2 mm". Its actually a modified western Desert Eagle Magnum. The Podbyrin does not exist. Its a made up prop for the movie.

Dirty Harry would not be himself without his Model 29 and the gold shield of a detective, from whatever force would have him.

ONLY a model 29...even today.

A S&W 696 with an 8 in. bbl. With a "light special" load. In a shoulder rig that is completely invisible to a casual observer.

I agree with the 500 s&w mag idea, but it wouldn't be a short barrel, it would be a long barrel. look at EVERY gun dirty harry had, all long barrels. I think it was more of the fact that it was the "most powerful handgun in the world" and that title happened to be held by the 44 mag at the time. Not that it was that particular cartridge. If the 500magnum had been around then I don't doubt they would have use the 500 instead, probably the 8 3/8"bbl version.

The mention of long barreled 500 mag in hollywood made me think of scrawny little Wes Bently in "Dolan's Cadillac". The first scene with him firing it in the desert, just about believable and pretty amusing.

You nailed it! 8 3/8" 500 Magnum!

a Desert Eagle of course

Revolver-love aside, this is the answer.

For years when TV or Hollywood has decide to go for the "big gun" image, the Desert Eagle has been in the inheritor of the 29's throne. It's large, powerful, and critically, it's an autoloader. One has to cater to the crowd, and an autoloader is the only technology with the minimum "street cred" to appeal to today's more Ritalin-addled viewer.

How about the 475 Wildey just for effect. Exotic looking pistol used in a lot of "B" sc fi movies
such as "Dollman".

I think Harry would carry a .600 Nitro Express Magnum like this one:

Round off the sharp edges, and that thing could've been used in "who killed Rodger Rabbit"

Seriously, it looks like a characature of a revolver, not a real gun.

Leave the sharp edges as-is, and you kill Roger Rabbit by just dropping it on. If you could lift it, of course.

Eastwood, who turns eighty next month, would happily have his 'Blood Work' 2 5/8" PC 627, loaded with .38 Specials, holstered on the right side of his walker, his badge and extra 8-shot moonclip reloads secured on the left - right by the Depends. Sorry, longtime hero... time catches up.
