I understand why people are apprehensive at first but a gun without a round in the chamber does you no good. That being said I don't really like carrying striker fired guns even though I know it won't go off in the holster.

I like DA revolvers and da/sa pistols for the only reason of handling outside the holster. If I'm going to Illinois I have to unload the gun. When I'm going to bed I transition it to another holster. I like that heavy trigger in those cases.

Always. IMO, if someone "isn't comfortable" with this, that person needs to re-evaluate their decision to carry a pistol in the first place, and then train him/her self to the required confidence level. The handgun may need to be drawn and fired with 1 hand. Kind of hard to do this if the pistol isn't ready, and you start the fight down a hand due to injury, or needing that hand for another function- like keeping a knife out of your neck, for example.

carry as you like but its one in the pipe for me, studies show that 21 feet or less the attacker has the advantage, space closes quickly why be at an even larger disadvantage by pulling out an unloaded gun to fight with, you may not have the time to cycle a gun before you have been stabbed a few times

Yeppers.

I carry because I believe my life, and the life of my family, is worth protecting. I'm under no illusions about what deadly force is and when it may be used. Why would I render my weapon useless for immediate use should the need ever arise for it?

I have to have my gun ready to go if it's being carried. I'll be TREATED like it's loaded if it's discovered or if I pull it, so it better be.

My wife is wanting to carry for her job and we went over this very thing. The guns that she likes the LOOKS of are striker fired. I kinda knew the answer, but asked the question of whether she was going to wear it loaded and one in the chamber. She says, no. She explains that she would be afraid to fumble it and hit the trigger as she is extremely clumsy. I immediately started trying to lean her towards DA/SA pistols or revolvers. She resisted. However, after having a talk with a defensive tactics instructor she's starting to come around and see that in the situations that she would most likely be in(in a car during test drives) she is at a terrible disadvantage if she plans to get a hold on the gun, un-holster it, rack the slide PROPERLY, point it in the correct direction and then fire the weapon.

I explained that she's shopping for the right tool, not the desired accessory. Once she's trained enough to feel comfortable with a loaded striker fired gun she should revisit the decision on which of those to get.

I know a carry piece or gun in general is an extremely personal choice and I wanted to stay out of it, but I couldn't let my wife put herself in a dangerous situation just because she liked the way a gun looked while uncomfortable with carrying it loaded.

Sometimes I carry a P32 with the slide clip and no holster covering the trigger - and nothing in the chamber.

But if it is in a holster (normally a Shield 9mm), the chamber is loaded.

OP: Watch just a few of the many Youtube store/garage videos of people suddenly under attack.
Even when the attackers Did come from the front, some of the victims had no time, until they escaped a few feet.

Instead of an unloaded gun, one might as well carry a can of mace, in a "man purse", or hold a Euro string bag of garlic and a cross.

Yup, sure do.

The chances are too great, that all of a sudden you'll be fending off an attack with one hand, while trying to bring your firearm into play, with the other.

And if you need it, it'd better be ready!

The only situations in which I do not are those when I'm carrying a S/S, striker-fired "pocket pistol", such as my J-22 or Bauer .25. Those situations are rare, and occur only on my own property.

And then you have people like my father who thinks it's illegal to carry with a round in the chamber. He even thinks the police don't carry with a round in the chamber.

The sound of clambering a round, and the additional time might not be a good thing.

Chamber empty?
Spare tire flat?
Flat spare tire = not funny. Been there. Before cell phones. My fault.
FYI, The Elantra I had to drive as a rental had no spare. Last week I discovered this. There was a 12 volt air compressor and a pamphlet. I returned the rental the same day thank God. I don't know if it was an error, or the norm for that car. I would have demanded a car with a spare if I had checked for it like usual, prior to leaving the rental lot that morning

If you've ever had the misfortune of being the victim of a violent crime, you know how quickly it happens. You're already at a disadvantage in that you're blindsided by the attack and have little time to react. It happened to me many years ago, and I had fractions of a second to react. I'm not sure why you'd put yourself at a further disadvantage by not having a round in the chamber.

I don't own a gun that isn't drop safe, and I don't carry a gun with safety on the trigger, so there's no danger of me having an AD from a drop or a holster snag. So there's no reason not to have a round in the chamber.
