My Father-in-law has been constantly doing something to his house. Whether it be repairs or remodeling. Kind of like the Winchester house in Santa Clara. A neighbor once asked him when his house will be finished. He said when I'm Dead!

and the silliest thing is that this so-called SHTF situation is so unlikely to ever come up that I feel ridiculous with each element that gets added.

No need to feel ridiculous. You've just stated the theme of your Collection.

You can tell people that your collection's theme is a lot more reasonable than the collection built around Zombie Guns, or Guns for Alien Mutant Ninja Bears.

Of course, I'm not disparaging those themes, either...
