Is there any rifle that meets these specs?

.223
Bolt Action
Takes AR-15 magazines and/or stripper clip fed
5lbs
Peep sights
Scout rail optional

Or is this a pipe dream?

Can it be a straight-pull bolt action?

One rifle I wish were manufactured (at reasonable price, of course!) is a bolt-action single shot 12ga fully rifled barrel. I say rifle, even though it's 12ga, because of the fully rifled dedicated barrel. If only I could find a company that made a stock without the magwell cutout on a Stevens bolt-action 12ga....

I'm going to second that idea...I've been wanting a .223 bolt action for a second rifle, and I have some DPMS AR mags that I'm not using (project that didn't get funded :( )

Almost..

As close as I can get to what you are asking for...is in the CZ line of rifles.
As CZ owner....four so far more to add.....and in discussion with other Cz owners.....we have come up with an aftermarket peep sight for the 527-223-bolt action. Wont take a stripper clip..or ar mags.....but at least they do use a removeable magazine..five shot...but some are looking into tens. My CZ...223....has proven to be a truely excellent rifle...and with a little practice I can change mags very quickly. And to add the advantage of a set trigger....really does add to the package!! CZ makes several models of 223...if you are unaware.

I think that Tubbs sells a rifle that is essentially a flat-top bolt-action AR. It's specifically designed to be a target rifle, but you might be able to get a receiver and bolt and make whatever you like.

Well, being in CA, I can see your problem re: AR-15 and detatchable mags...

Tubbs may be the way to go.

I want a Mini-14, with a heavier free floated barrel, a decent trigger, and one that takes AR mags.

I know, dream on.

This month's Guns & Ammo mag has a section on ARs. I'm sure I saw a bolt action target AR in there, and I'm pretty sure it had the Tubbs name on it.

Savage makes such a beast. My local shop has one of these - it's pretty neat.

rbernie, I know I'm being asinine now, but I need it chambered in 2 3/4", and no magazine. I've played around with a Savage like that, but chambered in 3" and with a magazine....

Maybe I can find an older example chambered in 2 3/4" and get a custom stock made? But then it's too expensive for me! Argh! :banghead:

Ooh, I want to play, lets try this one!

A scaled down Browning BAR (the commercial version, not a military BAR), chambered in .223, dressed in oil finished walnut and blued steel. Magazine like current BAR's, non-protruding.

For the tactically minded among us, a parkerized version, with synthetic stock, and the ability to accept AR-15 magazines. One of these with a 20 round AR mag would look like a baby version of the real BAR!

I'm again being very particular, rbernie... It needs to be a bolt-action, not a break open or falling block.

I haven't been able to find one because I don't think they exist. I may just have to buy a cheap ($50) bolt-action 12ga rifled shotgun from AG guns. They have a few different kinds, all with wood stocks.

Ah well, I might as well since I'll be modifying the heck out of it.

I have been thinking that perhaps a 9mm bullpup carbine would be marketable. If you build it barely within the minimum 26" OAL and 16" barrel it would be extremely compact. Kinda like the Tavor

-Semi-automatic
-offer in 9mm, 40 S&W, .357 SIG, 10mm, and .45 ACP if possible
-perhaps UZI or Thompson magazines could be utilized
(or popular pistol mags like Kel-Tec does)
-gas piston operated not blowback
-steel upper reciever, ploymer lower
-good trigger (I was thinking perhaps a chain that would PULL the hammer release rather than PUSH)
-Picatinny rail + good iron sights (perhaps AR posts?)
-adaptable for most of the goodies that people like (laser sights, foward grips, lights ect...)
-reasonably light 5-7 lbs. range would be nice
-sleek futuristic appearance (thinking of the simplicity of the Tavor or P90)
-Price would need to be $500-700 range I think

The british have lots of things that would fit this bill. Partly for gun law reasons, but also because they start training with manually-operated guns. there is a straight-pull L.85, but I have also seen a series of small, handly bolt rifles that take AR mags. Probably not available over here, however...

I'd say get a nice cheap, light .223 rifle and get a smith to attach an AR magwell to the bottom metal. Could be fun.

How about the Volquartsen Evolution?

evolution.jpg

So far vaporware, though. Website says it was supposed to be released summer 2004 and still no update.

Introducing Volquartsen's first semi-auto centerfire rifle - the EVOLUTION. We will be updating this page with improved photos and additional information in the coming weeks so check back for more info. The receiver is completely CNC machined from a solid billet of stainless steel. In addition, all of the internal components are also CNC machined including the trigger guard, bolt, etc. It will be available in both the .223 and the new .204 Ruger. The semi-auto rifle will be gas operated and use an AR15 or compatible magazine.

The suggested retail price of this rifle is $1,931.00. We are currently looking at late summer 2004 production. The Evolution will only be available through our distributors. We will be updating this page constantly with distributors that will be carrying this rilfe.

I'd like to see a Winchester M70 in .458 Lott with a properly dimensioned and reinforced stock, secondary recoil lug on the barrel, drop-box magazine holding five rounds, a barrel band front sight with a standard bead AND a flip-up "night sight", a very solid, single-leaf "express" style sight mounted several inches ahead of the receiver that I could "file in" myself, and a barrel not to exceed 22."

This COULD be done for a modest expense - lets face it, it would just be a variation of the standard Model 70 - but Winchester would probably designate it as one of their super custom jobs and charge a couple of grand for it.

As far as other limited-production guns like Volquartsen's . . . I'd be very wary of buying something with unique parts made in limited numbers by a small company. If something breaks, you might be SOL. Even items made by large companies but imported in small numbers may be a problem when it comes to spare parts. (Think of the Daewoo semi-auto rifles which were imported a while back.)

I'd like something like an AR-180 in 6.5x39mm.

Of course, I'd also like a Mini-Uzi in 9x23mm Winchester, and a Bizon-3 in 7.62x25mm. And a mini-Mauser in 9x23mm, and a Glock 17-sized 7.62x25mm, and a single-stack, full-size Glock 10mm, and...an M2 Carbine in 5.7x28mm. :)

John

I will second the 7.62x25 carbine. I know that some company is making a semi-auto PPSh, but all reports are that it's no more reliable than my brother-in-law.

It should be a bullpup, minimum length, and carry at least 30 rounds. The new semi-auto P90 almost fits the bill, but I'm not sold on that cartridge.
