Nutgun, nothing in my house is worth that much to begin with

Why do you figure they are only coming in for stuff? Do you leave your doors unlocked so anyone can help themselves?

What about the value of your family? Will your wife and kids want to live there still if someone breaks in? Will your kids be nightmare free?

Are all rape victims just happy to be alive without any complications? This goes beyond stuff. Right is right and wrong is wrong.

No bad guy is going to make me justify his actions. Shoulda, coulda, woulda...

Shoulda stayed at home... Coulda got a job like everyone else....Woulda still been alive...You made your bed now lay in it.

I suppose everyone imagines differing scenarios when thinking about uninvited intruders in one's home, home break-ins, home invasions, unambiguously armed robbery or aggressive invasion situations, and on and on.

Whether the intruders see or confront you immediately, or, you hear or see them but they do not see or know where you are, or if you are even there...

We end up comparing reactions to unstated, invisible and undescribed to everyone else, of imaginary situations/scenarios.

There are endless possibilities...and, usually, complicating considerations.

If no one else is home, vs, having a wife and kids or old people at home...home as thin sheetrock wall 2nd storey appartment, home as grouted Cinderblock Walls inside and out...
home as rural no neighbors within miles, home as common wall Row House...

On and on...so many considerations as for the quality of decision or recourse.

If I have a clear course for safe retreat, and no one else but me to protect, I would be glad to retreat and leave if possible.

My home does not offer anything of satisfying value to a thief or would be robber or burglar, and it would take them hours of tedious searching to find that out for themself...so, if I could simply just leave discretely, call the Police, and be patient with it, I'd be fine with that option.

If I were confronted and cornered, then, well...that's different, of course...I would be comfortable to be quite aggressive and earnest about it.

Your home is setup different from mine. There is exactly 1 door that will not be passed in my house. You can have everything on the other side of it. Once you get past that door, I'm the least of your worries, the 85lb guard dog is a more immediate threat to your welfare. If the person makes it past my dog(s), then they have to contend with trying to get past that room and through a second doorway, and there is a good chance that won't happen. My house is setup so that I can defend it with non lethal means if it is only 1 person. If there is more than one, then things get hairy, but I'm still going to let them have a chance a running away. My wife shoots as well as I do, so I'm not too worried about her either. I know about anyone moving on my land before they ever get to the door. It's a single story, and the windows are about 6ft off the ground. I can escape my house pretty quickly, let them have the material crap. If they are after something else... then it isn't about HD, it's about SD, and that is a different beast all together.

I whole heartedly agree that my family and possessions are worth defending, or I wouldn't draw in the first place. But your whole idea that dead men tell no tales is flawed. He won't need to be alive to speak up when it's clear he was shot in the back, and if you found yourself in court defending your actions it would be because it was already deemed there was something out of place. You said yourself, you've seen those lawsuits happen far too many times.

I'm not saying you should hold their hand, just that you act appropriately. If it warrants a lethal response, then so be it. But blind ideology is dangerous, and in this instance could prove the distinction between defending yourself and committing murder. And with the consequence, maybe there's another reason all together you should be praying this never happens to you.

I really don't want to kill anybody. I hope I never face the situation.

I'm not going out of my way to be a victim. I keep a low profile. I don't advertise my stuff. I don't brag about my stuff. I'm not out crawling around ghettos.

I know a guy that shot 3 people.

Killed one, wounded one, crippled one. He got out of it. That was 30 years ago. Would he get out of it today? I don't know. They were attacking him with non gun weapons. It cost him a small fortune back then. About one years pay. And the best criminal lawyer around. Maybe even some payoff money too.

There aren't too many bad guys out robbing for the fun of it. They do it for the money or to feed a drug habit. We aren't talking about robber doctors and lawyers. We are talking about scumbags. I don't care if it's little junkie Johnny down the street or junkie ex con. I can't mindread their intentions. If they are going to kill the first person they see. Or kill everyone they see. Or just take some stuff and leave.

They have many things not in their favor. If they are in the house, strike one. If they are armed strike two. If they are junkies, strike three. If they are on parole, strike four. If it's dark, strike five. If they posess burglary tools, strike six. Past conviction, strike seven.

I'm not going to tell law enforcement I murdered anyone. Or Deadmen tell no tales. Or serves them right. I'm just mister innoncent victim trying to protect my house and family. The first thing I'm going to do if I didn't already is pi$$ my pants. Maybe both....:D

Nutgun, nothing in my house is worth that much to begin with, and as I said before, you will still be subject to wrongful death suits. Just because the perp is dead doesn't mean his family isn't going to lawyer up and still take you for every cent you will ever earn. You are more likely to be a victim of a wrongful death lawsuit if they can show that the guy was trying to get away. Starting off with the attitude of "shoot till he's dead" instead of assessing the situation and shooting till he stops being a threat very well could make it worse on you. You might not want to die, but will live in prison be any different? You won't have YOUR stuff that you worked so hard for, you only get to see your wife and kid through some glass, and you no longer have any freedom.
And posting those thoughts on a public forum can come back to haunt that individual if that individual is subsequently involved in that or a similar situation. Forum posts are admissible evidence, and they can be tied back to you.

Countersue the family for not interviening with their stupid relative. Should have made him get help. Or a place to live or a job or money ....They may be just a guilty of negilgence.

I may have stopped from killing himself with his drug addiction problem.:D

Nutgun, I have never even heard of a countersuit actually being taken up by the courts, let alone succeeding.

The way it sounds like you would react is you hear someone in the living room while you are on the other side of the house with your family and you go charging in guns blazing. If it truly is a crack head, you very well could scare them off with just the show of a gun or making enough noise.

And to your dead men tell no tales... that's what forensic evidence is, and more than once it has been used to convict someone. The dead men don't have to say anything, their bodies, the blood splatter, the location of the powder residue, the striking points of the bullets in the opposite walls, etc.. say it for them.

There won't be a text book scenario for anyone. The bad guy or the victim/s.

It could very well be a matter of life and death with milliseconds to make that decision.

I'm really hoping it doesn't happen to anyone here including and especially me. But as with everything in this world...it happens all the time.

Some will be prepared. Some will live to tell about it and some won't, good guys and bad guys.

milliseconds.....

I watch CSI and I stayed in Holiday Inn Express once...

Does it boil down to if the cops think you did them a favor or not? DA looks the other way.

I'm not talking about dragging the bad guy out of his house all the way to my house. Not shooting a passersby. Death in the commission of a crime. I highly doubt they will be citizen of the year recipients. There will be many factors come into play. My background their background. Their claw marks trying to get away.

If you wound or kill you still stand a go chance someone will want revenge on you. You will probably have to move anyway. What if they were gang members? High chance of that.

There probably won't be a good outcome regardless of death or wounding.

Nutgun is just yanking ya'lls chain for kicks. Trying to stir up controversy. Heck, he even told you so in his first post. ;)

Everyone on here has already had the FBI GPS your front door dressed as the substitute mailman.

You shoot to stop the threat...nothing more...nothing less.

Your pre-meditation internet ramblings tell a lot about your character...I believe that others have pointed this out quite well. Too bad it isn't sinking in at all.

My belief is we all make choices as human beings to do right or wrong. I didn't cause one person to drop out of school, rob a bank or kill someone.

You as I have every right afforded us by God and country. How you treat your rights is up to you. But don't blame me for doing what I have to do because you chose to give up your rights for some stupid reason. If everyone wanted their rights and protected their rights and valued their rights we wouldn't be having this discussion. But stupid people exist. Stupid has a price attacted to it. How much price depends on how big the stupid.

Nutgun, you've resisted each and every comment made, which is a waste of our time and the site's bandwidth. I note that sincerity and repetition do not create truth or fact.

Enough.

Point being highly trained professionals train for two kill shots for each threat.

They train for the second shot to make up for the deficiencies of their chosen weapon.

Are the people opting for a shotgun less confident in their shooting abilities and therefore pick a more forgiving gun?

Two of "Bodel's" theorems apply to the choice;

#5 that states- the speed of conversion of an aggressive man to a passive man is directly proportional to the size of the hole in the end of the barrel.

#16 that states - the purpose of a weapon is to let in a lot of air and let out a lot of blood.

Trite sayings aside, the three times I've watched my husband leave for the middle east I've told him the same thing- whether they have knife, rifle or IED, empty the magazine and to hell with the Geneva convention. Just come home.
