Is there any company out there that makes them? I can't stant that silly rimmed Russian caliber, one in 308 would be groovy, especially if they made it so that it would accept G3 magazines.

Well, here's the deal.

Nobody is importing a Dragunov anymore. There are Chinese Drags available in .308, but they've been problematic and magazines are scarace as hen's teeth.

The closest thing you can get to a Dragunov is the Romanian PSL. It's not ACTUALLY a Dragunov; it's a long-action Kalashnikov design, but it looks like a Drag.

It's expensive, but that's not the really bad part. The bad part is that magazines, if you can find them, are like $80.00 a pop (10 rounders).

You can find these at www.interordnance.com.

If you want an eastern-block type semiauto rifle in .308, I'd recommend a Robinson VEPR, VEPR II, or Super VEPR. The Saiga is available too, but only has 8 round magazines (instead of VEPR 10 rounders) and isnt' going to be as accuate as the VEPRs.

If you really want a Draguonv lookalike, the PSL is probably your best bet.

The least expensive alternative is probably a long-barreled Saiga .308. 20" barrel, IIRC. A .308 VEPR is a bit more, but should be at least as accurate as a Drag in .308. Mags cheaper, too.

After AWB dies in 2004, the import bans become pointless.

This is news to me. :scrutiny:

The import ban has absolutely nothing to do with the AWB. Even if the AWB sunsets, the import ban is in full effect. AFAIK, it has no sunset provision and is just as likely to die or be overturned as the rest of the 1986 ban, the 1968 ban, and the 1934 ban.

Best we can hope for is to maybe get hi cap mags back.

(And yes, I write my congress critters.)

Correct, but they wiill be pointless. Besides, unlike the other laws you mentioned, it can be repealed by one person, doesn't need the complicity of all them CongressCritters.:)

The other bans will die in the 2006-2010 timeframe, I presume, 2020 tops.

There's a .308 Draganov sitting on the rack at my local shop. Someone brought it in for consignment. Not sure of all the details on it but the price is :what: $2100 :what:
Might be negotiable however.......
FWIW the guy that brought it in is actually Russian, I was there when he came in with his father-in-law. Pops bought a Buckmark that day.

Just because it is pointless doens't mean that it will go away. The books are full of "pointless" language. There are so many gun laws that it is difficult to count them all. They don't go away either. The import ban has the potential to be political, so I don't see it going away. Sounds like all you have on your part is wishful thinking unless you can provide some sources that say otherwise.

Mine is a like new Yugo (Mitchell arms) sort of Drugonov, it comes with an new complete, ready to go. dry charged(just add water ) IR yugo sniper scope $1700 on consignment at Valiant Arms , in Cottage Grove, Oregon.;)

I think your going to have to do a bit of work to get a Drag stock to fit a VEPR II. Interestingly enough these rifles are all initialy imported with a pretty nice dragesque russian made stock that is discarded and replaced with the american stocks you see on the rifle. I understand that Robinson Armaments is hesitant to sell the stocks separatly since without other modufication to the rifle it will mess up the foreign parts count. I suppose if you asked really nicely and promised to swap in an american made part he might send you one.

*edited to add, you can take a look at the VEPR I (no number) to get an idea of what the stock looks like. (of course you could just buy THAT rifle and solve the headache too)

The NDM-86 (Chinese Drag) in .308 can produce impressive results w/match ammo. David Fourier (often writes about AK stuff in SGN) has reported 3" groups at 600yds from an NDM-86 w/trigger job. There's no law per se preventing the importation of Russian Drags but there is a "gentlemen's agreement" between our two govts where Russia agreed not to import "war materials". That's why we see Romanian, Bulgarian, EG stuff but not much from Russia. I've heard a few rumors that the Romak-3/SSG97/PSL will soon be imported in .308 and when/if that happens I'll be curious to see how it compares accuracy-wise to it's 7.62x54 brethren.
