What's the dumbest thing you've seen someone do at the range you go to? I've seen ALOt of dumb things, people walking out when people are shooting, people letting their kids run around, and more recently someone with a 1911 with a laser sight with it loaded and the hammer back POINTING IT AT THEIR FACE to see if the laser sight was on or off. So what kind of moronic stuff have YOU seen?

rednecks shooting shotguns can be funny. But i think you did the right thing in leaving because a drunk redneck can be dangerous.

There was some idiot that just got done talking with his buddy, I dont think he even looked down the range, and he yells "ALL CLEAR" while there were 3-5 people still down range, we all then yelled at him, and he eventually got kicked out by the RO, I dont know how stupid you have to be to do that......

Not at the range, but at a dove shoot on a Wildlife Management Area. This guy had his son with him, about 10 I would guess. Both of them had been doing stupid stuff for a while and several people were starting to get pissed. Dad shot a dove, but did not kill it. instead of wringing it's neck dad has his son throw it up in the air where he shot it again. Less than 5' over his own sons head. Not to mention shooting low, directly at hunters on the other side of the field. No one was hurt, but I heard cuss words I have never heard. I really thought someone was going to beat the snot out of the guy. He gathered his stuff and left while everyone cheered

Dumbest thing I've ever seen at a range I did. A friend handed me a M-1 to look at ( he wanted me to see it was a Rockola) I took the rifle, supporting it under the forestock , other hand on the butt and looked at the breech. Bad lighting I turned into better lighting and swept the whole line.

Then my friend mentioned that the rifle was loaded and chambered

.38 cal holes in my target when I was shooting .22 LR

i cant tell you how many times some ones shot MY target, i remember one time this kid and his father, (neither which was too bright, continuously walked out on the range when people were shooting) kept shooting my target until eventually i went over and politely pointed that out, the kid who was probably about 16-17 didnt see "what my problem" was and said something about "the range being for everyone" to which i pointed out that may be but MY targets arent, neither of them understood but at least they moved farther down the range and stopped hitting my targets

I did not see it personally but a friend did..

One female LEO trying for more than 3min to make the mag of a MP5 fit inside the... pistol grip..

congrats for your honesty Treo. nearly all of us did such things at least ones in our lifes, and sometimes even without noticing it. it's a sign of maturity to admit it.

I could be wrong, but I dont think an Mp5 magazine will fit in the pistol grip.....please correct me if im wrong....

Crazy Range Instructor

I wasn't shooting, but we were in kuwait and doing a 9mm shoot. The guy running the range stood downrange, on line with the targets, and gave the fire command, obviously nobody shot, just kinda stood there and waited. The guy said that he was gonna stand in between targets while they shot.(the targets were like 3 ft apart) He said that if anyone was gonna shoot him, to please hit the sapi plates, apparently he had been shot before.

My brother shot me in the leg with a rental .22 pistol semi auto at an indoor range once. Oddly enough, he was a former US Marine. One would assume he would have known how to safely handle a pistol.....

these are all perfect reasons to why I don't shoot at ranges stricly desert shooting the only fee is your gas and your ammo :D

Usually a sweep or a close call to being a violation, but nothing serious yet.

But I did spy someone "transfer" from one bench to the other, with his finger on the trigger, safety off.

Fortunately it was pointed downrange.

Oh and the transfer of weapons from one person to another, loaded.

I was shooting my ar15 indoors a while ago, and some guy got a cell phone call when I was shooting. I couldn't hear him because of the double hearing protection. My friend that was with my tapped me on the shoulder after I had 10 shots down range, and I look up to see a guy holding a cell on his ear with his ear muff off. The guy was screaming into the phone that he couldn't hear anything. Considering the rifle rang my ears with just ear plugs, I can't imagine what it did to his hearing. I honestly think he likely suffered significant hearing loss.

I was nearly finished shooting at a local indoor range about two weeks ago when a middle aged couple came in and started using the shooting booth right next to me.

The male (in his early 40s) was "instructing" his female (she was in her late 30s) friend in the finer points of marksmanship and during a break in their shooting, while I was at an equipment table behind them packing up my gear, I turned to see the female holding the gun (it was a stainless 1911, couldn't tell you the brand, the brass on the floor was .45) that she had been shooting, slide in battery, muzzle up in both of her hands with her chin resting on the front of the slide/muzzle while he was speaking to her.

I left immediately because I can't stand getting blood spatter on my gear.

Last week at the range, Target Sports, I took a ricocheted shotgun slug across my right cheek. When I walked two lanes left and advised the fool that his splattered slugs literally cut a 1” gash in my face (and I stood there bleeding) he retorted, "Maybe you should have them give you a new lane". He then proceeded to shoot more rounds. The two gentlemen to my right on lane 4 were also splattered and somewhat urinated-off at the fool’s retort.

I concluded that day that shooting ranges are like humans...they all have a "backside".

Stupid things on a firing range

I was a range officer when I was in my early 20s. An elderly couple beat me to the range one morning so they could shoot by themselves...still somewhat foggy at the 100 yard line so it was difficult to see the target. He was shooting an iron sighted 1903 A3 Springfield. He apparently didn't own a spotting scope. His solution: Have the wife stand next to the target at the 100 yard line and spot for him with her finger!...Now that's what I call a relationship built on absolute trust. We had a very brief discussion regarding their technique...they departed pretty much in a huff and never returned.

Been twenty years ago at least.

This guy comes into a range with his girlfriend.

They are both dressed up like Miami Vice wantabees.

He takes out a Uzi submachine gun and loads it.

Laughing all the while.

When he pulls the trigger, the gun immediately climbed back at him,end of the barrel pointing almost right at the ceiling.

The line holding that target did'nt survive.

He killed it.

His target and the line fell gracefully to the floor.

I left.(shaking my head)

Did i mention some idiot once brought a bow and arrow to the range, and if that wasn't bad enough went out WHILE people were shooting to set up his little target and went out WHILE PEOPLE WERE SHOOTING to retrieve arrows? The guy also had like six real little kids with him completely unattended running around and fighting each other while he would occasionally angrily shout swears at them. Everyone at the range was basically stopping and going '*** is this idiot doing', I literally stood up from the bench i was at and said out loud "i cant take this sh**", and left. There's a lot of dumb low-class people that go to my range and annoy the hell out of everyone, most the time you cant talk to them rationally either with out them getting angry and further proving their stupidity

I've never been to a range and don't want to contribute a story of my own. What can I expect? I have two pistols to shoot, SP101 and an MkII. I'm not very good currently with either. I have to shoot the SP pretty close range to even get on the paper. How are targets placed and at what ranges?
