Back in 2012 we had a pretty good thread discussing the optimal cartridge for Eland. 375 H&H and 338 WM were the undisputed champs.

Supposing you were stuck with 7 Rem Mag, what would be your preferred factory load?

Would a Hornady 162 gr SST Superformance get the job done at <150 yards?

I have never shot an Eland... would I be flamed if I said I'd be comfortable using my usual Remington 175 gr. Core-lokts...?

SST on Eland....NO!

You need a premium controlled expansion bullet that is heavy for caliber such as Barnes TSX or a Swift A frame style bullet. I'd definitely go with a 175 gr bullet. The 7 mag is a very marginal caliber for eland. Give yourself all the help you can get by only using a really good bullet.

If it were me...Id go 175gn Nosler Partition around 2500fps and try to get max penetration. Id go slower and hope for less mushrooming and deeper wound.

Eland has massive bones so you would want a bullet that maintains integrity should you happen to hit large bones.

Here guys shoot them with .270's, 7X57's, 30-06's and the list goes on. Your PH however may require that you have a minimum calibre so check. Although I have a 30-06 which will do the job I bought a .375 specifically for Eland hunting but would have as a minimum a 30-06 with premium 180gr bullets or upwards. The eland is a huge animal.

The PH will also have a heavier calibre that you could use, but a heavy mono bullet in your 7mm slowed down will prove highly effective with the correct shot placement.

Thanks for the advice.

I had a feeling the consensus would be heavier not faster. Let me see what PH says.
I might have an oppty to bring a Sako in 375 if 7mm is no go

Last time in Africa I fore goed the extra $1000 for the Eland to complete my plains game round up. I brought a .270 WSM and used 150 grain Federal Nosler Partitions with complete success on all except the Wildebeast which I opted for the .375H&H with 300 grain Partitions . If had to use a 7mm for eland or wildebeast I would use 175 grain Federal trophy bonded Bear Claw ammo.

Never hunted Africa, but on big N. American critters, its hard to find complaints about a 175gr Nosler Partition or Speer Grand Slam. Those are oldschool and I can't offer anything on newer bullets. When something works well, I don't change unless I have to.

Sounds like I have 3 highly credible choices.

Looks like it will come down to PH advice.

thanks!

So the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw was discontinued... for similar deep penetration I was told to look for the 175 gr Swift A-Frame.

Does anyone know where I can find factory 7mm Rem Mag ammo loaded with that bullet?

Locally they sell a PMP Bullet called the Kalahari Elite. It has a 150gr. Scirocco II bullet at 3 018fps. The long range hunting boys rate the bullet over the Accubond.

Do you get any of our ammo over there?

I had Safari Arms custom load me 175 gr Swift A-Frames at about 2800 fps.

On Safari we stalked a group of Bulls for about an hour, finally, the oldest among them walked into my shooting lane about 175 yards away. I had a clean broadside shot at his left side. It was a clean double lung hit. He ran about 80 yards and then sat down. We stalked closer and closer, and I took a second shot at his heart from about 35 yards and he died instantly.

We recovered the first bullet sitting against his skin on the opposite side.

Again, always about shot placement.

i used a cz 550 in .357H&H for alot of african plains animals and all i can say is it works with a captial W. i shot this eland with it. eastbank.

A few years ago, my former boss toppled a large eland shooting his 270 loaded with 140 grain Fail Safe ammo. One shot at approx. 125 yards did the job.

Did you know that elands like sliced bread?

Some forty years ago, my wife and I stopped in at the YO ranch near Kerrville, Texas, to visit a buddy of mine who was a hunting guide there. In the course of driving around the 50,000 acres, in one pasture we met Sally the eland.

Definitely big. Since to her a truck meant yum-yums, she came up to visit. Hal offered her a slice of bread. Big, black tongue as she leaned down to the pickup truck's window.

Part of her diet was leaves from scrub oak.

I doubt a eland is any bigger than a Alaska moose and I use a 30-06 180 Nosler partition on them [moose] with good results.

i don,t know about moose, but i have been told eland can get to a ton. but with the right bullet and shot in the right place i think the 3006 would get the job done on both. eastbank.

a good elk-moose hunt is not cheap with a good outfitter either, if planned right a hunting trip to africa for plains animals is with in reach of most would be elk-moose hunters.eastbank.

^^ Unless you live in Alaska. My resident big game license is $25 moose tag is free.:D I outfit myself.

yes i agree, here my life time license was 102.00 at 65. but come down to the lower 48 and go on a good elk hunt with a outfitter for two weeks, drive or fly from alaska. you will rack up a nice bill. if you ticket shop you can get a round trip ticket for 1200-1300 from pa. to south africa and its cheaper to stay and eat, one U.S. dollar- 11.5 rand. you pay for the animals you shoot and at the small ranchs you can get a good price on them. when i was not hunting i stayed in petori at a friends motel for 40.00 a day and i paid the hunter(a friend) 100.00 a day hunting. i,ll admitt if you know or have good friend there things are cheaper, but it can be the same any where you hunt. you will not see the amount of wild life any where in the world that you will in africa. i have made three trips to africa, spending just about three months hunting there, going to botswana, kenya and nibia and made friends for life that i talk or e-mail to just about every week. eastbank.

Eastbank-

You are right about the "good friend" part. In this case I'm the good friend. I often [guide/outfit?] friends of mine from the lower 48. We split the raft rental [2 rafts@$800 a week combined] the fly in costs [5 hours super cub time $1000 total] I keep it at 3 hunters[me + 2] I do all the preseason scouting.
So yes it's cheap [comparably] for them.

Whew, well, I feel poor. :D I know a good guided elk hunt is expensive. Since most states if not all make you draw a tag now, I've given up on the idea. I'm too old to try to do it myself, anyway. Mule deer is tough enough in the high country. Africa? As the New Yorkers say, fagedaboudit.
