Favorite .44 mag powders

Another vote for Unique.

I'm kind of a wuss and so I shoot mostly .44 special loads through my .44 mag guns nowadays anyway.

+1 for Unique & cast.

4227 is another long time favorite 44 mag powder.
Puts up some impressive numbers, and feels good in the hand too.

I use H110 ( Win 296) for my full tilt loads with 240 gr XTPs. I use HP-38 (Win 231) for my mild 240 gr cast loads, 8.3 - 9 grains is usually good for about 1050 - 1100 fps.

Unique for cast and less than full power jacketed loads, Blue Dot for the blast and flash when I want folks to enjoy the full magnum experience :)

I also use Blue Dot for .357Mag, .38Super, & 10mm loads so I only use two brands of pistol powder, but its Unique probably 20:1 for my reloading.

I just recently started loading and shooting 44 Magnum. Unique works good for me but I have a load with Clays that works well also. (I'm not shooting shotgun much right now so I have "powder to burn" so to speak.:))

I plan to try 700-X when I find some more but am saving my inventory for other cartridges.

I'm happy shooting low to mid levels loads

JJ, you might want to consider some AA#9, I think I’m getting more accuracy with this under a 280 gr. WFNGC Beartooth than H-110. My data is limited since I injured my old wrist by over doing it with load and zero workups, but even with my limited data the AA#9 seems to be more accurate in my 4” 629, I’m getting about 1130 fps…once the wrist heals I have more groups to record.

For mild everyday plinking I’m using either mid to upper range 231 or Unique under a 240 gr. LSWC, the 231 loads have an edge over Unique in accuracy in my gun.

I spoke to Hogdon about the 280 gr. H110 loads since data was scarce and they told me that they didn’t get adequate accuracy until they got into the 310+ gr. range, hence the absence of their data on lighter cast bullets.

I’ve gotten good results with 2400 under a 260 gr. WFNGC Beartooth and a 250 gr. Ledhead Keith.

I use Universal for light and medium loads, 2400 for most full power loads and H-110 for break-your-wrist loads. Mostly under 240 grain hard cast bullets.

I have to admit that when I'm loading Big Boomers I like some flame to add to the show. So I lean towards H110 and 2400. There are lots of other powders that work just fine. Could well prove to be more accurate to boot. But I just like the extra pomp of the fireball powders.... :D

The panic buying in the US has affected us up this way too. Shelves of powder supplies look like oases in the Sahara these days. I recently tried to buy some more 2400 without success so I'm going to play around with some 4227 instead.

296 for my jacketed rifle loads and full-powered 300-grain Redhawk loads, and Unique for my 240-grain lead SWC Super Blackhawk target loads.

Red Dot for weenie loads, Unique for semi weenie loads. 2400 for all cast bullet loads and H110 with all jacketed bullets.

2400 gives me great accuracy and good velocities with my cast 240gr. Keith style and 300gr. Lyman cast loads. I think I'm getting 1350fps with my 240gr. Load and 1200 fps with the 300gr. Load, at just under Lyman's max.
That's out of a 7.5" SRH.

I have a jug of 296 for max jacketed loads, but so far I've been happy with 2400 as I shoot mostly cast loads anyways. I haven't used much 296 for cast, but looks like I will be trying, as I'm about out of 2400. Got some 4227 to try too.

I also use unique for mild cast loads, and it works great for me for 240gr. at 1050fps. Love unique.

I am using 2400 under a 240 gr LSWC in my 7.5" Super Blackhawk. My supply of 2400 is running out but I have 4 lbs of w296.

Unique, Universal, Accurate #5 for cast.

In .44 Mag, 9 grains w/ a 255 grain cast Herco
W/ a 200 grain cast, 11 grains Herco

In .45 Colt, (Ruger, Colt Anaconda, or S&W Mountain Gun) 230 cast 9 grains Herco.

I discovered Herco in mid 80's, it ended my usage of Unique.
