This week, FBI NICS started requesting answers to 4473 question 18a, I.D. type and number. I wonder what prompted the change to recording our drivers license numbers? Previously, only the FFL dealer would hold that record. What do you think? Why do the Feds now need our I.D. numbers?

In my state I have to provide that info anyway because the state runs the check for handguns and the record goes into their database. I have to fill out a seperate form and a 4473.

As Gunny says, they know who you are and where you live. :D

The feds have my security clearance information, photograph, finger prints, social security number, Army id card number, Army serial number and a bunch of other stuff. My drivers license number won't matter.

I have no problem giving my DL but I will not use my Social Security #, they promised it wasn’t for ID purposes.

I know, my Mother worked at the regional SSA office and they really got curt when somebody tried to use a SSN for ID.
I guess the fed's excuse is that your IRS "taxpayer number" just happens to be the same as your SSN.

I do note that a lot of contacts, like doctors and pharmacists, are going by your birthdate and no longer call for "the last four of your social."

Yeah.... I also have that on my S.S. Card, "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION"

I had to apply for a new Discharge Certificate about 15 years ago (Ex Wife destroyed it). The new one, doesn't have my Service Number, but has my Social Security #. Go figure......

I went to the DMV yesterday and got the Gold Star added to my Drivers License so I can fly on commercial airline. I had to show my birth certificate, Social Security card and my registration for my truck for proof of identity. The Clerk scanned all of my documents so the information is now with the Feds.

To keep this gun related the USPS claims it photographs every piece of mail they process which means they have photos of your gun magazines, sale flyers from places like Cabelas and any gun items like parts that have been mailed to you. The data base for storing all of this must be massive but it shows how difficult it is to truly hide from the Government that you are a gun owner.

None of this information has anything to do with preventing crime or keeping us safe. It is used after a incident occurs to help catch whoever they believe committed the crime.

The potential for misuse of this information is tremendous. It is easy to see how it will be used against gun owners after the Democrats regain power in Washington. Gun owners are going to pay a very deep price for supporting President Trump.

I predict that newborn babies will soon be required to be microchipped. Microchipping is a proven technology used in animals so there will be no health risk. Think about how it will work when you want to buy a gun. The clerk scans the microchip in your body, links it to the Government computer and, presto, you are in the Government database with approval or disapproval in just a few seconds.

The brave new world is very frightening.

It doesn't help anyway. I always include it and I still get delays. My question is...how many people with my name, my birth date, my SS#, my gender, my physical characteristics, my place of birth and living at my address are there? As far as I know there's only one and it takes NICS days to figure that out. Maybe instant has a different meaning when the fed gets involved.

It's too bad most people aren't smart enough to figure this out.:(

I've said that from day one. He isn't as pro RKBA as many people think he is. As soon as congress flips he'll flip with them.

They only take images of SOME of the letter size mail. You can actually go to the USPS website and see what they take images of.

From the USPS website on Informed Delivery * Images are only provided for letter-sized mailpieces that are processed through USPS' automated equipment

As I recall the images are only kept for 7 or 10 days unless you're under investigation by the Postal Inspectors or there's a warrant.

I have never been delayed on a gun purchase and now my Alabama CCW permit is deemed good enough evidence of background check that I don't have to wait on a call to the feds' clerk.

Some years ago I was denied a security clearance needed for my job. Turned out a person in the next county of the same name but no other similarity was accused of failing to appear in court on a marijuana charge. I eventually got my clearance, but it went way high in my agency and local LE before they could tell a difference between me and Pothead Watson.

Already happened. At least temporarily. When my son was born they gave him a wrist band. My wife and I both got one. The bands are paired together so the right parents take the right baby out of the building. Apparently they had issues with deliberate kidnapping attempts of newborns.

In any case I don't see where the issue is. I always handed across a complete 4473 with ID. The clerk fills out there portion and I hear my DL ID # used for identification when called NCIC. So I don't see how this is a really a change. And like millions of other veterans, tons of personal information like DNA is on file with various government agencies anyway.

The government probably knows more about me than I know about myself. 20 years in the army and a top secret clearance, yeah there no secrets.

The ID number didn’t used to be part of a NICS check. The last time I ran a NICS check was in July 2017, and they didn’t ask for it then.

I have a S.S. card issued to me in the 1970s. Somewhere on it is printed: "NOT TO BE USED FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES."
Give the dot.gov an inch, they'll tale a parsec.

I JUST opened the NICS search page. No requirement for ID type or Number. This information is not being transmitted to the FBI for the background check. Even if it were, Federal law prohibits the FBI from keeping records of the information transmitted.
