is it safe to remove the series 80 safety from my colt if i use a lightweight firing pin and a heavy duty firing pin spring.

new member my first post.

Welcome to The High Road!

Why do you want to take the series 80 safety out? To do so you have to replace the frame parts with spacers and that can make reassembly even more difficult.

Wouldn't adding a stronger firing pin spring defeat the purpose of having a lighter firing pin? As far as I know the reason for installing a lighter pin is for faster lock times.

in my research i found that the combo of light firing pin and heavy spring prevent the gun from firing if dropped which is what the series 80 safety was designed for

but without the extra parts

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

The "extra parts" in my 1991A1 have never given me any trouble at all. The only drawback to the FPB is that it limits you on options for aftermarket extractors and firing pins. Most aftermarket parts are sold to folks that want them rather than need them. (I know because I've bought quite a few :))

I thought this was common practice when rebuilding a series 80.

Maybe not.

thenk you for your input I think I will like this forum
