First Buck Of The Year

Ok, so he may not be the biggest...but in the area where I hunt this buck was definitely a "shooter". Oh yeah, it's archery season....still have another buck tag and two more doe tags. Not even couting gun season

I cut out the tenderloins and cooked them on the grill....delicious

Oh yeah, this buck weighed 165 field dressed. No idea about antler size, he's not really big enough to get the rack scored.

That is a nice buck and from the looks of the antler bases he is a mature one, probably at least three years old. They would make some really nice knife handles.

There are places on the web where you can learn to tell how old a deer is by its teeth. Link. This is easier than trying to guess by the horns.

What do you use to get deer blood out of your pants? Ms. Meek uses a detergent called "Shout".

judging by the teeth, he was about 3.5 years old. Well meek, generous amounts of shout and a long soak in some cold water got the blood out.

Congrats Kimber. I just shot my first deer with a bow last week. It was only a doe but it was a trophy to me. Too many get tied up in scoring, I will admit I like big antlers too but you can't eat them. Congrats again. I'm going to try and kill my Maine moose in two weeks with my bow.

Meat in the freezer, yum. Nice job. Multiple tags, we don't get that in the West unless you get land owner preference or something. You guys should transport some of that excess game over here... I wish. I know, it's not that simple. We get a deer tag and an elk tag, if we're lucky, for the Eastern side of the state. If we're not lucky, we get to hunt in the thick, wet PNW rainforests with a general tag. Stainless guns are popular here, never tried any bowhunting, I'm not quite there yet. Maybe if rifle hunting loses it's challenge, so far, it has not. Not even close.

Always use cold water, hot sets blood stains. I have also found that that Orange GOJO hand cleaner that mechanics use works extremely well on stubborn stains. Not much blood work for me lately, but greasy food, automotive lubricants, and latex paint stains that have been set in the dryer do indeed come out of my clothes. I just rub it into the stain real good, and let it set until the next load of wash gets done. Batting a 1000 thus far since I started doing it.

To remove blood from clothing pour peroxide over the stains for a few minutes and rinse with cold water then wash with detergent. As a medic with 20 years field experience, I can guarentee it works! lol It works best with fresh blood.

Whatever I get on them just gives me a new design with which to work.

What kind of bow are you shooting, Kimber? Our season starts Monday, but I may have to wait til it cools off before I get into the woods. It was 91 degrees today, and I'm not going to sweat my butt off in a stand for a deer. Can you imagine field dressing a deer in 90 degree heat? No thanks. Nice deer by the way.

Nice buck, Kimber. Half of my deer taken have been with a bow, but everyone of them has been antlerless. Never have taken an antlered buck with a bow (although I have taken quite a few with rifle), and I would be tickled to take one like you got. Still, all my does are trophys to me, expecially with the bow. I was reading in Bowhunter magazine that the average bowhunter takes a deer every six years. Guess, I am lucky, because I have taken one or two deer with a bow every year since '97 except for last year I got three with a rifle, but I didn't get any with a bow. I know, I'm a braggart!

For the bloodstains, +1 to peroxide poured directly over it. Then soak in a cold water and peroxide solution.

Stinger, It was 34 degrees the morning that I got him, was wering camo pants over my regular pants, but took them off to drag out and field dress. The cold water and shout took all of the blood stains out, no need to worry

I'm still shooting the "old style" carbon steel Bear razorheads (got stuck with a 1,000 of them many years ago, then gradually realized over time that I had actually been "blessed."). Never hunted hogs, but shoot "inserts in" (4-blade) on deer and no inserts on bear & elk, due to the "fat, heavy bone, & thick hide" factor. Never hunted hogs, but for whichever traditional head you opt, I'd recommend 2-blade for hogs for the same reason (I use either a 60 or 70 pound longbow).
