You live in this world.

bureaucracy

: a large group of people who are involved in running a government but who are not elected

: a system of government or business that has many complicated rules and ways of doing things

I have yet to have a single background check be approved quickly. This is the process to buy a firearm for me, in Illinois, from a local store:

Go to store, if they have it in stock, put in the order fill out the paperwork and come back in 3 days. That's at least 2 trips, which is a lot of gas if the store isn't close. It completely rules out going to any other town to buy.

IF they do not have it in stock, order it. Come back when it arrives, fill out paperwork, leave the store because it's not approved. This usually takes another day or two. That means 3 trips, minimum. What a waste of gas.

I hate this. What a tedious, gas-wasting, pain!

I have the same issue. I order a firearm, later in the week it arrives at my FFL. I drive to my FFL, fill out the paper work and he runs the approval. I NEVER get approved on the spot. I drive home and come back the next day. It's really frustrating. I'm a veteran with no criminal record.

The 72 hour 'clock' starts in Illinois once the agreement to purchase is made, not when the handgun physically arrives. From the Illinois State Police: https://ispffl.com/Public/FAQ.aspx click on the "What are the Illinois Waiting Periods?" link.

If you order a firearm and pay money on it that should be enough evidence to document the agreement to purchase to start the clock so you can fill out the ATF Form 4473 and the dealer can run the background check. Then when the handgun later arrives (as long as the approval has been received, the 72 hour waiting period is complete, and it is within 30 days of the submission) you could take it home. Only two trips would normally be necessary.

AH! So buying a gun in Illinois actually contributes to globular warming!

I've never once had that actually happen though. The background check never clears the same day. Gander mountain told me ~90% do not clear within a few minutes, generally hours or the next day is the rule.

And yes, wasted gas and global warming!

And for what? So I can't hold one more gun with my extra arm?

If the FFL knows the law, you can get away with two trips. If not and they won't listen to reasonably-presented information about the subject, I find it best to let it go (arguing with them isn't likely to get you your gun any faster) and deal with a different FFL next time.

+1

LGS had a sale on a .380 BG that was out of stock. I filled out the paperwork that day and picked it up 72 hours later only 2 trips.

How can the FFL let me take it when the background check has not cleared?
In Illinois the FFL can not transfer the firearm until the background check on the ATF Form 4473 comes back with an approval. The Illinois State Police - Firearm Services Bureau told me that state law requires the approval before transfer, so "if it takes a week or ten days, you just have to wait."

I once had a customer still 'Pending' after three days so I called in and the ISP-FSB man looked into it and said there was a glitch and the buyer was already 'Approved' and he updated the website to show it as such. His was the only one that ran beyond the state mandated waiting period. Some background checks take five or six seconds, most take several hours or overnight. My last customer bought a stripped lower receiver and it took two days for the approval to come through.

Under Federal law (state law may affect this) if your state requires a background check each time your CHL is renewed, you have only to show your CHL and you are approved.
