Just a friendly reminder that the cops are probably the best solution to most any home protection problem. So the other day my roomate is having a few people over for an early St. Patty's party. Im in bed with a slight stomach flu and suddenly someone is pounding my door in saying "we need your help NOW!" so i get up throw some clothes on and go downstairs only to realize that the party is a bit larger then i would have liked and there are 3 obviously intoxicated individuals near the front door doing alot of pointing and yelling. Being fairly capable of taking care of myself i went over to them and tried to talk them into getting a cab (at my expense) and go home to sleep it off. Soon i realized that this wasnt going anywhere so i found myself pointing to the street and sternly yelled "get the **** out....NOW!" they decided not to listen so i physically removed the loudest of the crew from my home. The other two followed me out and they soon were in my face screaming something about disrespect. I had reached the point of no return. I realized that i was likely about to be beaten up so i put my back to the garage door and sure enough next thing i know there is a fist coming right at my abdomen. I shrug it off and strike back knocking the one punk down. As this was happening i caught a pretty good one to my right eye splitting my eyebrow wide open. the scuffle lasted only about 10 seconds after that and they decided that theyd better be going after my roomates friends pulled us all apart. Long story short could have easily been resolved with a short 30 second phone call and i wouldnt have been hurt........Just call the cops confrontation kinda sucks.

oh no my roomate and another guy got involved no glory there really. And though they left in worse shape then im in remember they were hammered drunk and i was stone sober. I am not afraid to protect myself or my home but man leo's probably could have easily made them gone without any physical pain to me. Sounds like a better option to me

I'm amazed that you didn't puke all over them.

Gotta agree calling the Police would have been the way to go

Use 'em when you can.

I was photographing on a heavily wooded lot where a building is going in and a rabid coon showed up and started following me around. I had a pistol in the car, legally in Texas, permit, et, but was in town and decided this was just the thing for the guys who sign up to "protect and serve." I put in a 911 call and got a tall blonde woman officer who pulled her asp on the coon, then an animal control woman who capture-sticked and caged the animal. No problems. Gave them all something to do and kept me out of it.
Call 'em. Use 'em when you can.

Wow! You did all of this without grabbing your uber-tactical gun of the month off of the nightstand. Please tell me that you at least put on some 5.11 pants for this encounter. You should've racked your tactical Remmy 870. I've heard that the racking sound alone sends thugs fleeing into the night.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I hope that your tummy feels better now. Dealing with that kind of stuff is no fun when you are sick. Dealing with drunk idiots when you are sick is downright miserable.:)

I would say you did everything correct up until you were cursing at the drunkards. In my experience, angry people who are intoxicated just will not respond to this kind of stuff. After you tried and talk them down you might have been best off just going inside and calling the cops at that point.

However with that said hindsight is 20-20 and realistically sometimes things just go south in a hurry. I wish you well in a speedy recovery.

A guy on our highschool basketball team Ryan was at a party. A neighbor of mine that I knew growing up who was a wanna-g went to said party. They didn't want him there, and threw him out the door. As he was leaving, he turned around and shot and killed Ryan. Later a few other people were stabbed at the mall in retaliation for testifying.

Glad you're ok, but really I'd disagree with all the funny comments about not having grabbed your gun.

Wow no one said deadly force, but NO one stays in my home drunk or not after I ask them to leave.

it's all fun and games until dome drunk guy pulls out a knife or starts swinging on you. And where is the shotgun, oh ya in your safe because you didn't need it :banghead:

Just a friendly reminder that the cops are probably the best solution to most any home protection problem.
1. Police have no legal duty to protect individuals.
2. Police have no legal liability when they fail to protect individuals.
3. Police have no physical ability to protect individuals in most cases.

Neither I nor any friend has ever been protected by the police as an individual. In fact, friends and I have ASKED the police to protect us as individuals and been turned down cold.

On the other hand, I have protected myself with a firearm, as have several friends and relatives.

When life and limb are in danger RIGHT NOW, protect yourself or don't get protected AT ALL.

Rather than the police, YOU are your best form of defense, even before the need to use a firearm arises.

Some handy advice:
1. Do not invite stupid people into your home.
2. Do not allow those stupid people to get intoxicated to the point of violence in your home.
3. If you live with people incapable of following 1 and 2 above, find other companions.

By all means, call the police when life and limb aren't in danger RIGHT NOW. If however, you DO face the immediate, credible threat of deadly force, you probably won't be ABLE to call the police. Certainly the person creating that threat has no incentive to LET you. Certainly also, it's difficult to dial 911 when someone is trying to choke, beat, stab or shoot you.

Just don't be too disappointed if the police either show up late or not at all.

Folks,

Please, don't forget where you are. This is S&T, at THR.

This is NOT your little brother's Internet. The chest pounding is out of place, and so is some of the language that has been posted here (and no, throwing in a * doesn't make four letter words OK).

I have an ample supply of infractions to pass out to anyone who needs a more strenuous reminder of how to behave here, and if I dug around, I feel sure I could find out where the last mod to use it left the banstick too. Please, let's not go there.
