I am working on my Form 1 and I have hit another snag; how do I answer this:

The real answer is "for fun" but somehow I don't think that is what the ATF wants.

Should I say "to replicate the Mk. 18 rifle used by the US Military as close as possible"? - which is also true.

Or should I say something along the lines of "target shooting" "recreation" etc?

I've always used "for all lawful purposes" and never had a problem.

There's no particular "right" answer, but there's apparently wrong ones, since people have gotten forms kicked back for answers like "for the coming zombie apocalypse."

Keep it short and simple.

When my dad started buying full-autos in the early 80s, he jokingly put down "investment" and then felt silly for sending it in that way... ridiculous how true that became because of the Hughes amendment.

I've put several things - "shooting/collecting", "all lawful purposes" or "investment" as well. From my understanding, as long as it's legal and not too much tongue-in-cheek, it doesn't matter much.

State of Tennessee accepts NFA firearms as long as they are properly registered on the NFA registry and all federal laws have been complied with.

State of Tennessee also recognizes one of the legal reasons to own a gun as "curio or ornament".

I wonder if "curio or ornament"--making a replica of collectible curiosity firearm, say a De Lisle carbine--would be a reason acceptable to the ATF on a Form 1?

In the case of manufacturing your own silencer a very truthful answer would be "significant cost reduction when compared to commercially sold units". I wonder if that would pass muster?

Don't try to get cute with the reason (such as by mentioning "zombies"). The ATF examiners don't have a sense of humor. Just stick with "all lawful purposes."
