Full-length dust covers for 1911's?

This is for standard government 1911 types (full-size). I already know some people think it's ugly and sacreligious and whatnot. All I want to know is if there's something inherently detrimental to the design. For example, Springfield Armory used to have Operators with the full-length dust cover, but then started coming out with the "normal" look afterward (USMC Operator).

Personally, I like the look -- rail or no rail, but mostly with the rail since it looks like it actually served a purpose. It looks like there'd be that much more heft to it. I do not like the abbreviated, "standard" dust-cover with built-in rail (SA's newer Operator, Kimber Warrior, etc.). Did they get rid of it because they felt that it was unnecessary, sort of like full-length guide-rods?
