Gaetz introduces 'Abolish the ATF Act' after ruling against stabilizing braces

Grandstanding. Regulations can be overridden by a law, but the GOP doesn't have the votes to do that.

Abolishing the ATF, without repealing the underlying laws, would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face. For example, there would be no one to process NFA applications, so whatever is owned now would be frozen in place.

Besides which, the law enforcement functions would merely be transferred to other agencies, which may lack the institutional expertise.

We see this all the time with calls to abolish the IRS. Somebody is going to administer the tax laws, even though that somebody is not called the IRS. These are mindless games.

Posturing. Gaetz would need to get a lot of support to override antis in Congress as well as Biden. If he gets the support, bravo, but I would rather wager how long an ice cube lasts in hell.

I think that it would make more sense and have better chances for success to repeal 922(r) - as a first step. When the pilot project has worked then the 1968 GCA and the NFA could be targeted. I would already be happy, if I could just take an SBR with me on a trip to another state to visit family and go shooting with them.

The importance of 922(r) is overrated. The only people that seem concerned about it are the denizens of online forums. That's because it doesn't apply to possession, only to the building of a gun with too many foreign parts -- which is something that's nearly impossible to prove regarding an end-user consumer.

It’s a sham-show.
Grandstanding.
And all of this because someone thought it would be a good idea to come up with a way to circumvent the NFA. I would prefer to have seen all the money used to develop, market and purchase these devices pooled together and directed at funding an effort to amend or overturn the NFA. Just my two cents.

I have no need for the ATF so they can go by the wayside, and it would be alright with me.
But you would still have the federal gun laws, which somebody would have to enforce. The priority would be to repeal the gun laws, so that the ATF could go back to concerning itself with alcohol and tobacco.

Recall the plans to fold the ATF into the FBI. This lead to the Waco incident where the ATF was putting on PR show to demonstrate its relevance and competency. Didn't work out. So the FBI took over, didn't go well either. Not to discuss Waco but it's a good point that some agency takes over and the problem is the law. Once Clarence is done deciding whether they had SBRs and braces in 1791, maybe a decision declaring such restrictions on semi configurations would solve the problem. Don't hold your breath. Anyway, just a virtue signaling proposition from Gaetz. No chance.

I want this to happen, however republicans only do these types of things when they know it wont be passed, then they can point the finger at the Democrats. I'm old enough to remember when Trump was president, republicans had majority in the senate, and in the house, for two years, and did jack squat with it.

I'll get on board when something like this is proposed with a congress thats apt to pass it.

Silly symbolic gesture. (Is that we now call “virtue-signaling?”) Abolishing the ATF will not eliminate enforcement of federal firearms law. If I am detained, for any reason, and an illegal firearm is discovered, well, it is contraband, that can be seized, and I could be prosecuted, at the discretion of the US Attorney for that federal district. It is the NFA, itself, that must be amended or abolished, and it is the job of congress to do that.

Anyone with a lick of sense knows this is not going to get through the Senate and that Gaetz is just grandstanding.

He's wasting our energy and opportunities by slopping untenable show bills out. We need more serious legislation and less showmanship.

I wouldn't believe anything with Gaetz's name connected to it. He's as bad as the ATF!

NOTHING is as bad as the ATF..........Gaetz, to his credit has been a consistent 2nd supporter..........a hulluva lot more than many in leadership positions in the Florida Republican Party......or National for that matter.

No, it ain't gonna fly, but it IS a fly in the ATF's soup!
