I have a Gen 5 Glock 19 which I like well enough. My LGS sent an e-mail out today and has a good price on a Gen 5 17. I've had the itch to pick up the 17, but the practical side of me is thinking that it's pretty much a duplicate of the 19, except it's a little bigger. Does the 17 bring anything to the table that the 19 doesn't that I'm not aware of? I don't shoot competitively and this would be a range gun only.

I shoot a 17 considerably better than a 19 because of how it fits my hand(s). The longer 17 grip gives my weak hand pinky a place to sit. Two extra rounds is a bonus too.

I have a Gen 3 17 & 19, a 19X, and a Gen4 21. Everybody makes holsters for these guns, so every one is carryable. I like shooting all of these guns, and these are all keepers. I had an early Gen4 22 and I hated that gun.

If I only had a Glock 19 then I’d want a Gen4 21 to complement the nine, since it’s a full size gun and a .45ACP and (IMHO) everybody should have a full-size .45ACP. If Glock ever decides to release a Gen5 21SF, I think they will sell tons of these.

I prefer the 19 because I think it is the most versatile. The 17 is bigger, so it wouldn't be as "carry friendly". No reason not to buy it though- the 17 is a great range gun, or could also be used to augment the 19 as a "night stand gun" by mounting a light to the 17.

I was lucky enough to end up with a G19 and G17..both gen 4..I shot both and the G17 fit my hand better, even with a G17, 17r magazine in the G19. Yes, it's easier to CCW a 19, but I had a G26 for that. Traded the G19..

I have several G19’s and 1 G17, and the 17 is my bedside firearm.

if you are getting a good deal and have the cash, no real downside. Glocks sell easy when price is right. What is the LGS asking for it?

Like them both. 19 and 26 were my carry Glocks until the G43X replaced both.

I'm leaning on getting a G17 sometime by the end of the year as long as ammo starts to make its way back to the shelves. I had a 19 as well as other compact 9mms, and they are all gone. I gravitate toward the full size pistols, and the G17 would fill that roll.

17 fits my hand better . Bought a second one . Gave the 19 to my girlfriend , fits her hand perfectly. But , all 3 are gen 4 with finger grooves . Might not be a problem with gen 5 .

Have them both in Gen 5. Shoot about the same to me. G19 gets carried and the G17 with light is next to bed. Then just buy a bunch of 17 or more round mags and you’re good to go. If ever the SHTF and need to bug out that way I have 1 for me and 1 for wife and a whole lotta ammo

$534 for the Gen 5. Based on what I'm seeing it's at the lower end of what they'e selling for.

I don’t think the G17 gives you much, if anything, over the G19. You can use an XGrip and a G17 magazine and basically end up with a G45. Less than an inch sight radius is negligible too IMO.

To me, it’s a want, not a need. But I have zero issues buying wants, as long as the price is right.

YMMV! Good luck

This is definitely a want as all my needs are already met. The LGS is closed today, and I'll find out tomorrow if they sold out of the ones they have coming in and make a decision then.

Sounded like the OP had an opportunity for a G17-5 and a price he thought was enticing. Not a this versus that thing, though I may be wrong.

That's correct. It's been on my radar but I wasn't pursuing it until I received the e-mail from my LGS. I don't mind other suggestions, although I'd rather go with the 17 than the 34.

Exactly the same carry setup I have..short barreled G19...:)

I also have a G19 and G23 with the full size mags. I like the XGrips feel...worth it to me.

YMMV
