Getting a .45 for home defense Sig or HK

I've carried both, I like both. They're both well made and dependable. So... you should get both!

The suppressor is a meaningless option for me.

Be sure you're comfortable with the LEM trigger if that's what you're considering. I don't have a preference, it's just "different".

I finally have the money and about 50 sheets crumbled paper with pros and cons of the HK45 (full size) and the Sig P220 carry elite. I'm open to anyone else's recommondations for .45's.

Here's what I came down too.
Sig P220 carry elite
-Comes w/ Sig Night Sights
-+p ammo approved
-piticanny rail
-Smaller gun so easier to conceal than a full size HK
-Beavertail
-More after market accesories and cheaper accesories including mags

HK45
-Glo in the dark sights
-Full size, longer sight radius
-+p and +p+ ammo approved
-Piticanny rail
-Option for aftermarket threaded barrel for suppressors
-10 round magazines
-Fully amedextrious gun
-LEM... Any LEM variant can be switched to DA/SA and DA/SA comes stock with a match trigger
-Plastic buffer to reduce recoil (although I don't feel reduction in my current HK)
-O-ring on barrel for improved accuracy (although I think this is a gimmick... the greats way before HK hit targets dead on without any kinda O-ring)

I already have a HK and I do like it, and that's probably why my pro list for the HK is a bit longer... But every gun owner I talked to says Sig is the golden standard with the exception of HK owners.

By the way I was considering the Sig P220 carry elite because if there was ever a time that I wanted to switch from carrying a 9 to carrying a .45 I could do that with the Sig P220 a little easier than the full size HK45.

Thanks for reading and any help/advice or even recommendations for other firearms would be appreciated.
I looked over second-hand SS Smith & Wesson PC CQB (cop ninja lingo for bad dude in the house). It's 3rd generation 45xx series gun with eight round magazine plain steel combat sights (not night type), no rail....... The tag was $900 (no box, papers) and only one magazine. The fit/finish was beyond reproach with zero movement between slide and frame. I liked what I saw. This is hardly surprising as PC is to S&W what Corvette is to Chevy.

I'd pass on any Heckler and Koch pistol made today as the company has been putting computer chips in their handguns under the guise of maintenance

Typical response when one doesn't understand a technology. RFID is an inventory tool, nothing more. There are a lot of products that carry RFID tags. You're looking real hard for something nefarious that isn't there. It just happens to be a DOD requirement that everyone who sells to the Government will need to do......So, it is part of the new MILSPEC. There, that should make you feel better. If you don't like it being there, just rip it off, not real hard to do either.

-LEM... Any LEM variant can be switched to DA/SA and DA/SA comes stock with a match trigger

I do not believe the HK45 comes standard with the match trigger, (which is a supurb trigger BTW).

Either gun is top quality, but I'd choose the HK45 because it equals the Sig in certain ways and bests the Sig in a couple IMHO. The changable grip geometry, mag release system, mag capacity and general overall reliability and robustness top the reasons I'd pick the HK.

I would rent each and try them and see how you like them. Only you can decide which you like better. I have a friend who loves Glocks and swears by them. I love Sigs. We are both correct. Doesn't mean we don't shoot other styles but at the end of the day it comes down to personal preference.

The sig if I had to pick. If its just a night stand gun, why not a 1911?
1911's are beautiful awesome creations, BUT (and I know the insults and rants will follow this) I have seen too many malfunctions with the 1911 platform. So I don't have faith in them. I have seen Kimbers, Springfields and Para's malfunction at the range. Maybe when I'm older and have the 3 grand to drop on a Wilson Combat for a "just cause" gun. Until then I'll stick to something that I know will go bang when the trigger is pulled.

SORRY SORRY SORRY 1911 lovers.

1911s are a different type of gun I feel from the three being discussed. As much as I love them they don't fit in this debate. The three pistols by HK,Sig and FN are very similar builds. Therefore make for a close comparison. I myself would have a hell of a time deciding on these and I’m interested to see what the OP decides.

P.S. I love a good pistol thread that dosen't include the word "Glock" !:barf:

Glock :)

I had to do it. Just for fun.

My 45 is a Springfield 1911 but I would not be afraid of the Sig.

I have a FNP 40, and I love that gun to death. IMHO, it's just as accurate as any SIG I've shot, and it's about half the cost. Mine has never failed on me once! It has always gone bang when I pull the trigger. Get the FN and don't look back.:D Then, use that money you saved to buy some ammo and a good holster, and you'll still be 200-300 dollars ahead. Just my two cents...

By God, now that's a review!
Get this man a review section somewhere, this one glows, to death! :D

Sorry, y'all, I just can't stop lovin' my FN. I'm actually taking out to the range today. :D If you couldn't tell, there was this big grin on my face as I was posting....

I've owned both the Sig and the HK. Both are great. I now have an FNP-45, and won't be getting rid of it. Glad I got it while the price is still manageable, because if word ever gets out about how good these guns are, the price is definitely going up.

If you ask me, the HK has the better capacity and finish, while Sig has the better DA/SA trigger. Again, both are great. Pick one up and see which fits your hand better. Decide if you like a safety/decocker better than simply a decocker. Decide if capacity is an issue or not. Both will be more accurate than you (not saying you can't shoot, just that both are plenty accurate). Both have good fit and finish.

Then pick up an FNP-45 and compare. I came out with one of those, plus 200 rounds of practice ammo, 50 rounds of social ammo, and an Insight Technologies M3 tac light for the price that I could have gotten an HK45 or a Sig 220ST (or 220 Elite).

Just sayin'....

Do you live in the city limits or in the country?
My concern with the .45 is that it's a lot of gun for home defense in a residential area. The potential of a round going through a wall and hitting someone in the street or another house is a possibility with serious legal consequences.

Sig's are chunky and ugly.....Kind of like taking the plain girl to the prom. She'll work very effectively and get the job done, however, no-one's going to notice.

HK's are svelt and beautiful, kind of like taking the prom queen to the prom.

Merely YOUR opinion, I find SIGs to be one of the best looking handguns. I for one dislike the HK pistol line because there are no all metal guns to be found there, I dislike the feel of polymer for its looks and just feels cheaper.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
