So, I'm going feral pig hunting next month. I'm taking my TC in .357 and a rifle, and shotgun since you can hunt them with anything. There are a lot of black bears up there as well. I have a SAA in .45LC with some hot loads, is that sufficient for a good bear defense gun? I think it is but you guys probly kow more than me. I can shoot it accurately, and can draw well, fast so is this an OK way to go? Thanks in advance!

If that is a true SAA or an equivalent clone then you better check to see if it can handle those hot loads. The Colt SAA and those closely copying it can't handle very hot loads.

It's a Uberti, and they are not that hot, about like stout factory ammo, not low power loads like CASS stuff, that's what I meant by hot.

Standard pressure .45 Colt loads would NOT be my preference for black bear. You mention a rifle and shotgun. Shotgun with slugs would be reassuring. What is the rifle chambered in?

.223 so that's out for bear protection, but works for the feral piggies! I won;t be carrying all three at once, but would carry the .45lc and a shotgun or rifle or the TC....I also have a model 29 but it is in absolutely perfect condition and is from the 60s so I really don;t want to holster it or take it hunting anymore....getting to be worht way to much.

It's a black bear not some prehistoric monster.

Fairly thin skin, 3-500 lbs, not all fat from summer. A good solid (hard cast) .45 Colt load should do just fine to break bones or reach vitals.

The over-concern about bear "unstoppability", especially blacks, on this board continues to astound me.

Your 45LC with heavy bullets should do just fine if the need arises. Most black bears will be 200lbs or under. Oughta do...

Biker and Carbar, I thought so as I've been hunting here in NM for 30 years and not been scared of them and allways carried a 1911 or earlier a .44mag as backup. I even thought that a 230gr ball would do the trick out of the 1911! I thought I'd ask but turns out I may get a .454 Casull TC BBL for the hunt anyway and THAT would surely do the trick, no real backup needed except it IS single shot so the Colt will go with me!

Marshall...

Ya got me. I have Bailey's and coffee runnin' out my nose, down my 'stache and beard...it's an ugly sight.

The 45LC is better than a rock. I believe you could easily scare away 99% of all black bears with a rock.
