I recently bought what I thought were 9mm Gold Dot JHP 124gr bullets to reload, I realized after I opened the box they are labered .357Sig. They are .355 125gr, can't think of any reason they won't work other that 357 Sig generally travel a bit faster than most 9mm. Any opinions? For what it's worth, I'll probably load them with a fairly warm amount of Power Pistol.

Should probably shoot just fine but may not expand as well at the lower 9mm vels as the ones designed for 9mm.
Just guessing but I would think the ones for .357 sig are designed to open up at higher vels.

357 Sig bullets will work fine in 9mm.
9mm bullets will not always work in 357 because they taper to much for the case neck to hold resulting in setback.

I would like to know the length of the sig GDHP bullets.
9mm(124g) is .561 by my measurements. In my notes the hp cavity is .104 deep.
Sorry, I don't have the id.

These measure .530" oal. I sent an email to Speer, see what they have to say. I've loaded Precision Delta 124gr JHP with 6.1gr of Power Pistol, averaged 1145fps. According to one of my load data books, 6.6 is good for 1235fps, probably not a fun load to shoot out of my pocket pistol, a Kel Tec PF9.

These measure .530" oal...

Cool thanks for the info.
I've got a kissing cousin to the PF9.
The short bbl. is around 100fps slower than book values.
Not that I never go out-of-book loading.:)

Please keep us updated on how well they feed.

I think I remember reading the profile is slightly different to aid in feeding in the .357 Sig. Both will expand at normal velocities for the 9mm.

Please don't forget to post the reply from Speer.

There isn't any load data with the 125 gr bullet for the 9mm Luger as the change to the change to the ogive to make it a better 357 Sig bullet will increase pressure in the 9mm and offer problems for you. I would recommend exchanging these out.

This the reply I got from Speer, a little hard to understand. If I get it right, they agree with what ArchAngelCD says regarding the different profile. Not sure why the pressure would increase though. I ordered a box of 124gr 9mm Gold Dots, (read REAL carefully THIS time), I'll compare the two when I get the correct ones, take some measurements, etc.

Doesn't mean they can't be used, they just won't say their max 124 Gr data for 9MM is safe for these bullets.

Longer bearing surface = a little less powder (or a little more pressure looking at it a different way), if you begin with start charges and work up I can't think of any reason they wouldn't be safe to use at a reasonable OAL.

I think you will find that the bearing surface is longer on the 357 Sig bullets

Winner-Winner=Chicken Dinner!!

The Sig bullet design has a longer bearing surface for the shorter neck on the Sig case..This IS to help avoid bullet set-back..Bill.

PS: Sig design projectiles CAN be used in 9MM loads, but at times, not the other way around..

Here are pics of the two bullets, the 9mm is on the left. The 9mm is a bit longer, (.555" vs .530"), the .357 Sig has a larger opening, not sure why. The 9mm 'bearing surface' seems more rounded than the Sig, the Sig seems dead straight in comparison.
