Subject says it all. I'm looking to get my father in law a new addition to his range down on the farm. He already has a few mild steel swinging targets that work great for pistol. I was considering either a torso style steel plate for handgun or a 12" gong for longer range rifle or maybe both. I would prefer whatever target I get being capable of .223 soft point rounds around 50+ yards.

Oh and I'd prefer them to be cheap. There are lots of vendors with $500 targets, I'd rather have less than $100

Another vote for JC Steel targets. My order from them was around $200 - but that was a for 4 metal targets, capable of handling centerfire pistol and rifle rounds, plus 2 target stand kits and shipping. I will likely order from them again - thinking about a pepper popper and other various targets. I love the mobility of the target stand kits, and that the legs and crossbar, being composed of rebar, can be replaced at most any hardware store.

Salute Products has a wide variety of high quality targets, not low cost like the OP wants, but well worth considering for targets that would most likely last a lifetime of shooting. salutetargets.com

i buy most of my targets from big dog steel in OH or jcvibby in WA.

I'd get complex targets like the headhunter, silhouettes, hostages, etc from big dog and the simple cheap plates from Jake

I would strongly urge you to buy quality steel targets, designed for the use intended, Pistol, small caliber, ect...

Mild steel will quickly deform under repeated impacts and cause cratering, which can result in lead and steel fragments going in all directions, and eventually penetration of the steel plate.

I once obtained some scrap inch thick steel plate from work and thought it would make ideal targets for high power rifle.:) They didn't last anytime at all.:(

I had a 1 and 1/2" plate of mild steel I tries to put a 30-06 cor loc through at 50yds. It left a nasty scar. Next up was a mosin nagant surplus ammo at 50 yds. In was dumb and lucky, my shin took a fragment that drew blood. Mild steel + high velocity is dumb
