As some of you might know, I moved from California to Florida recently. Well today I finally went to the local drivers license bureau (what, no DMV?) and swapped my Cali license for one from the Sunshine State. It was fairly painless and cost only $20. (I was rather amazed that in northern Florida, more than half of the people getting licenses were speaking Spanish, but that is another story.)

Now, in the last 9 years I've lived in "anti-gun" jurisdictions (Guam and Cali) and for various reasons I didn't buy one single new shooting iron. I just wasn't willing to jump through all the "anti" hoops. I was staying off the radar -- 'nuff said.

During those 9 years in anti-gun purgatory, entire new companies have come into being! Entire new lines of products! And I didn't git none! Oh, the Pain! The Shame! The Heartbreak!

But today, that all changed! I kept a promise to myself, and strolled into my local gun shop on the way home to look at all of the goodies displayed right out in the open on racks and under glass. Semi-auto black rifles! Rifles with pistol grips and flash suppressors! Even real suppressors/"silencers!" Pistols that hold WAY more than 10 rounds! Be still my beating heart!

I was informed that my still-warm just-laminated Florida license made me "good to go." I picked a brand new 9mm KelTec P-11 right out of the display case, and filled out the paperwork and handed over my credit card and so on. (They can't even sell these fine guns in Kali, last I checked.)

Well, I am a happy camper! Sadly, I must report that I couldn't take my new KelTec home with me today, due to some stupid "waiting period" rule. (Oh well, after 9 years, I guess I can wait a few days to pick it up.)

Anyway, it's great to be in a gun-friendly, "no retreat" Free State! Heck, I have a 200 yard range 15 minutes in one direction, and a 600 yard range 30 minutes in the other! Is this great, or what??!!

Next step: CCW!!!!!!!

Ya see!! I told ya that you should have come to Arizona. Here you could have walked out of the store with the new toy without waiting. :neener: :D

Travis: Welcome to FL. Hope you get the ball rolling on your CCW soon. You'll be happy to know (or you might already know) that after you get your FL Concealed Weapons License there will be no waiting period.

Safe shootin',
fiVe

FL has a waiting period? Only waiting period here is for the NICS boys to punch a few buttons on a keyboard... can take fifteen minutes, sometimes, even with SS number.

And welcome to friendly territory, pilgrim.

In Connecticut

you need a pistol/revolver permit just to purchase a handgun... Which btw takes 6-8 weeks. Once you have it though, no waiting period.

IN my case, the 3 day wait stretches out, because apparently the weekend doesn't count. Don't ask me why...

Great tip about the CCW removing the waiting period hurdle. However, I'm getting ready to go out of the country for a while, and I won't have time to line the ducks up for CCW until I'm back sometime in December.

Weekend does not count. 9 days? What county? Duval is 3.

Walk right out the door with CWL.

I believe that if you have bought a handgun at a shop, and then buy another handgun at that shop, no waiting period. Ditto if you trade in a gun.

I could be wrong, I have a CWL, so no wait for me.

Congrats about moving to a 'real' state.

Hey, just a heads up about your P-11, don't be disappointed with the gun at the range. It's a great gun for very close range protection and it's light. Recoil is pretty harsh for a 9mm and accuracy is...well...you'll see.:p I'd just focus on some draw/fire drills and maybe pick something else up for more plinking fun...like an SKS...:D

BTW, I carry my P11 almost every day. Something that small with 11 rounds of 9mm is great to have.

Thumper, I'm in Clay County, under Jax.

Chris, I'm not expecting to hit cans at 50 feet with the P-11. My Ruger Standard Model MK1 does that just great! But the P-11 with 11 rounds of 9mm in such a small package....I just had to get it.

No, the waiting period applies to all guns, period. I have my Concealed Weapon or Firearm License too, so I don't care. :D

I just picked up my Bersa Thunder Concealed Carry today and I don't have my CWL yet, so I had to wait. The three day period does not include the day of purchase, the day of delivery, weekends or holidays. I paid for the gun last Thursday, so I had to wait Friday, Tuesday, Wednesday and pick it up today. Its a nuissance, but I'll have my license soon and won't have to deal with that next time.

The anti-gun morons put the 3-day waiting period right into the state constitution! So when the Brady law went bye-bye...we're stuck with this. Of course, we STILL have to do the NICS and wait. We need to find a way to eliminate this waiting period, but that's tough to do since the mainstream moderate ignorants feel that since it doesn't hurt - it can only help. Our only argument is that other states have no such requirement and that they're doing fine without it.

Now, if you get a CWP - there's no wait & and you can legally carry that new Kel-Tec around almost anywhere you go except a few places. That's the best. Own a gun you couldn't before AND carry it!

Now that you've come to a wonderful state- please, please vote pro-gun. What we have in this state was fought for over the course of years. Freedom isn't free.

Arizona has great gun laws too, but they are not a swing state like FL. We are one of the most moderate, diverse and mixed states in the country - and considering we're nearly 50/50 Democrat vs republican, leftist vs rightwinger, liberal vs. conservative....our gun laws are fantastic, almost as good as Arizona except for the waiting period (we've got stand your ground law too). That's quite a feat if you think about it. If more conservative states had the same drive and organization as Florida, they should probably have Vermont style carry by now. So they're slackers :neener: We have a steady flow of well over 100,000 yankees coming down here a year - yet we've managed to fend off their anti-gun influence for the most part. Some integrate and see the light and aren't hostile to Floridian culture, others (like the scum in Palm Beach and those areas), want to turn Florida into New Jersey. When my cousin came down to visit from NY state, he was shocked that he was "allowed" to handle a handgun without first having a pistol permit. Told me up there, dealers won't let you handle them unless you show a permit first. The idea of that just numbs me. I think that Florida's laws and the national laws are unconstitutional (but tolerable barely). Talk about a difference in mentality!

Anyway, considering you came from Kalifornistan, this should be a total culture shock when it comes to guns in particular. You should immediately begin saving up or thinking about getting an AR or an AK. It is always better to own the stuff "they" don't want you owning. Make sure it has a 30rd magazine, a flash hider, and a folding stock because the antis really hate those things. California is such a nazi state with their way of thinking - everything from guns to smoking to you name it. Control freaks. My God, that place tried to ban smoking IN YOUR OWN CAR! That's what happens when soccer moms and leftists take over. That's why most of my posts regarding california are very pessimistic. When the vast majority of people think that way, there's no reforming the place. All you can do is jump ship. It would take a massive cultural shift before you could ever get decent gunlaws in california. A shift that won't happen anytime soon because they're still going towards abolition. I still respect our few trapped brothers in fighting the good fight. They're taking it on the chin year in year out to fight for principle. God bless them.

Enjoy your Rights and enjoy Florida.

Welcome to the Gunshine state. Damn proud to be so well hated by the Brady Bunch:neener: .
Travis McGee huh! I haven't read McDonald in about 20 years, but I loved McGee. Is he still making McGee novels?
If you are anywhere close to Jax, the get your shiny new license over to Gateway Rifle and Pistol Club. It is the only range in Jax, you will not be disapointed.
Ahh, just read that you are in Clay Co. Orange Park or thereabouts I presume. Get to Gateway, I'll be on the rifle range this afternoon. The guy with the Hawaiian shirt and an MIA.

Don't Tread On Me: Great rant, it is indeed great to be out of Cali and in FL.

0007: Hi back atcha Ernesto!

Dr. Dickie: Haven't been to Gateway yet, but I've been to the Bradford 600 yard range, down past Starke a little way. Great place. I'm right between two great ranges!

Welcome to FL :) Just had to wait for my first store-bought gun purchase myself. I was told that both long guns and pistols have the 5 day wait in Dade county, and i was also told that if you are trading in another pistol you are not subject to the 3day waiting period, though I haven't verified either.

SOON TO DO THE SAME !!!

Can't wait to be in your shoes! I'm moving to FL in 2 weeks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cant wait to buy my first handgun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Headless: I was so clueless about the 3 day waiting period, that when the store owner/clerk said there was a 3 day period something or other, I thought he meant I couldn't buy another gun for 3 days! Live and learn...

Tegemu, do High Roaders and their buddies ever meet at Gateway? I have yet to get up that way, I'm probably 15 minutes south if traffic is light.

Armedpolak: What part of FL are you moving to?
