Gun purchase question/rant

You did the right thing

Absolutely 98C5, if you have other options (willing and able to buy the same gun somewhere else) you did the right thing.

I cannot imagine them not being perfectly happy to wait at least another 30-45 minutes if necessary (esp under the circumstances) to complete your transaction.

I would have done the same thing. If they can't, you should find another good dealer who will appreciate your business. Good for you.

i think the problem is he drove 70 miles to get a gun and the gun store wouldn't stay open long enough to finish the deal and the reason it took so long was clerical error on the gun stores part (which means, if they were nice and really wanted to make a deal, they could have stuck around)

bluestar, that question was meant for the quoted passage by Rusty S. I apologize if that was not clear.

I have no problem with what the OP did (walking away), although I am also curious as to how long delays normally take to come back under the VA system.

I go through this all the time (not in Virginia).

My ffl explained it to me this way:

If it's after hours or on the weekends, when you are running through NICS, the average person gets TWO approvals per month.

More than two trips a red flag which, more often than not, delays your purchase.

:banghead:

To date, I have never had a delay, even during a gunshow when the system is maxed out. The owner knew the reason for the delay, the wrong box being check on the Virginia form by a store employee. However, he didn't want to wait another 15 or so minutes to complete the purchase. If the store was 5-10 minutes away, I would have had no problem. I was never nasty to them in any way, but I did show my dismay when he gave me the look of "get out, we want to go home".

If they don't want my business, I will find another dealer.

Bill's Guns in Gretna, Va. A true mom & pop store that will bend over backwards for you. I think I'll go there tomorrow.

;)

Glad business is so good you cant wait 10 more minutes to satisfy a repeat customer who drove 70 miles?

Id never buy another thing from that place..I know my local guy would stay open ANYDAY to please customers...hence I buy thousands of dollars of guns from him - even if I can get them a few bucks cheaper elsewhere.

wow, only in the gun biz...

I have never been slowed down in a purchase via the NICs check regardless of how many firearms I may be purchasing or have purchased in the "last month". If it was my shop, I'd have stayed open for at least another 30 minutes to hopefully finalize the deal. All it takes is one employee.

Never heard of a "new purchase" box. Sounds like you were making a new purchase to me.

The "New Purchase Box" as I understand it is for a new purchase.
There is another box for those who have pawned their guns and are reclaiming them. They also state this to the person at the NICS. I dunno if Tx uses a state or federal based background check.

Yes I have pawned a gun to raise cash to buy another gun. (I am in recovery)
I have been delayed in the redemption of said gun(s)

My #2 reason for getting my CHL was due to never have been instantly approved for any FFL gun purchase or redemption.

I recently found out through a gun trade from a gentleman in Kentucky that his ex son in law has the same date of birth, first, middle, and last name as I. Oh yeah he is a two time violent felon.

I must be leading a charmed life here in Florida. I have bought dozens of guns and never had to wait longer than about 15 seconds after the FFL gave NICS my data. I am thankful things are simpler here.

On my post #8, I attached the Virginia form. Yes, it was a new gun, but they failed to mention my permit to the state police. Being that Virginia has a 30 day law, the state police saw I was trying to buy 2 within 30 days. This caused the delay. If they would have mentioned my permit to them, it would have cleared within a minute or two.

Something similar happened to me two Sundays ago. I couldn't be approved online because apparently there are several criminals with the same name as me. No computer approval for me. I require the gun shop to talk with someone at the Depoartment of Public Safety and they are closed sundays...grrr. So I had to go back a few days later...25 mile trip each way.

I mean come on, I have a unique pistol permit number, a unique social security number, a unique drivers license number....the computer can't tell the difference between me and some felon that has the same name?

Whenever I buy a gun on a 4473 (Summit, CDNN), I buy it through a dealer who belongs to my club. He runs the NICS check before I even get there. I fill out the 4473, pay him and I'm done.
