I kept a promise to myself, and strolled into my local gun shop on the way home to look at all of the goodies displayed right out in the open on racks and under glass. Semi-auto black rifles! Rifles with pistol grips and flash suppressors! Even real suppressors/"silencers!" Pistols that hold WAY more than 10 rounds! Be still my beating heart!

Travis McGee, let's get one thing straight. I don't like you.

Got my FL Drivers License

Congratulations on your new Firearm. Feel lucky, Missouri has a 7 Day waiting period on Handguns and about 45 Days on CCL.

Not to hijack this thread, just want to clear something up.

Missouri had no waiting period for purchasing a handgun.

What they do require is a PTA. Permit to Acquire. The PTA can cost as much as $10 and depending on your local sherriff can be had in as little time as 15 min. Some sherriffs delay the return of your PTA by as many as 5 working days(effectively holding it up for 7 calender days).

The PTA is good for 30 days and must be given to the seller of the handgun, who then fills in some info about the gun and returns it to the sherriffs office who issued it.

Private transfers of handguns are not exempt from the PTA requirement ( yet many Missourians don't know this.) C&R handguns are excempt from the PTA and thus don't require one.

Failure to comply with the PTA law is a misdomeaner and thus must be prosecuted within 12 months of the infraction.

The PTA law dates way back, and was used in similar form to what NICS is now. Although not technically a waiting period, it allowed the local sheriff some control over who could legally purchase a handgun. IOW make sure the buyer was the "right" color. The PTA is classic gun control that should be abolished, especially since NICS does the same background check.:banghead:

BTW Travis, glad to hear your enjoying your newfound freedom. I was in the Sunshine State earlier this year and can understand it's attraction. Enjoy.:)

Armed Polak: I lived in Lauderdale 84-89 with my young bride and no kids. We lived on a sailboat on the Las Olas Isles a few blocks from the ocean. It was a very happy time.

Bigun 15: John D. MacDonald died 20 years ago, so the statue of limitations on literary crimes (clips) has run out.

But to dig into "why," McGee the fictional character was a Korea vet. I believe a lot of folks who carried Garands called mags "clips" for the rest of their ilves.

A real Korea or WW2 vet is welcome to confirm or reject that theory.

Yravis, I don't know. I did meet a fellow there who was a neophyte to shooting and introduced him to shooting but other than that I have not knowingly met any. It siounds like a good idea though.

Tegemu: Maybe we can rendesvous at Gateway R&P Club sometime, and you can show me the ropes and introduce me around? I'm picking up the KelTec next wednesday, and I'll be eager to break it in!

From DMV to the gunstore....

I did EXACTLY the same thing when I obtained my Nevada driver's license. We had moved from Canada to this wonderful State of Nevada, and I swear, it wasn't even fifteen minutes before I bought a very nice SIG 220.....

-WITHOUT a police permit to buy it and transport it the cop shop;

-WITHOUT another police permit to take it home;

-WITHOUT registration;

-WITHOUT needing yet another police permit to take it out of the house;

-WITHOUT having to take it ONLY to a government-approved range;

-WITHOUT having to keep it trigger-locked (AND in a locked box) during transport;

-WITHOUT having to justify my continued ownership of the gun every five years...

......and probably a few other "withouts" I can't think of just now. I can carry the gun (and any of my others) pretty much anywhere I want, openly or concealed, and shoot it when and where I want, with due attention to safety.

To say that all this was a breath of fresh air, after the idiotic Canadian regulations, would be to grossly understate the sensation. Every single day, even after nine years of living in Nevada, I give thanks for our escape from the clutches of Canadian bureaucracy and oppression.

Travis, PM me. We can iron out details. I have a new SKYY to check out and I'm working on a problem with my Dan Wesson Commander Bobtail.
