I thought the folding stock was a federal restriction? If it could still fire while being folded, it would be illegal everywhere. Although it's still technically legal, if they would change the color to a nice simulated wood-grain brown then it will increase it's chances of being banned in the near future.

You should be able to order them like out of an Ikea catalog, in all colors. For now, I'd settle for black.

i had the cahnce to check one out at a local gun show today. price on it was $489, which i really didn't think was too bad. it felt much more hefty and solid that i thought it would. sights were just the same as my Sub2000, adequate, but not exceptional by any meants. the action was very smooth and it felt very well balanced and i immediately thought of it as a great camping gun. ergonomics were pretty good, but the magazine ine the stock thing looks like it will hold a 20 rounder but not a 30 rounder. i was impressed, but not impressed enough to take it home. i certainly might someday, but i was on a mission for a SAM 7 today, but came up empty handed. when i'm in the market for a .223 rifle, i'll definately take a good look at the SU-16.

it beats the ak's and mini's when it comes to accuracy.

I think it gives Ruger a run for the money. bipod is a nice feature.

I wish they had another model with pistol grip shoulder stock on it but it will do.

now if they could come up with something with little bit bigger bullet. 30-06 or .308 would be nice.

Happy, happy... Joy, joy!

On a whim, I pointed my dealer to an SU-16 listing on Sturmgewehr, which is now gone as it has been sold (to me). The Semi-Auto Market Board is here: http://www.sturmgewehr.com/webBBS/semi4sale.cgi

It was $399 plus shipping, and was still available. Yes! So, it looks like I'll soon have mine.

While it won't hold a candle to my three .223 bolt-actions (Cooper Arms M21 MTV, Remington 700 VS SF, and Savage 12FVSS, listed in order of best accuracy) in the accuracy department, it will nonetheless be fun to shoot.

Sven and larryw will soon have a chance to shoot mine...

I emailed Kel Tec about converting su 16 to 300 whisper or 6.8x43.

Sir
Yes, it could be converted but not easily. We are not doing anything like that at this time. Keep in touch for more updates.

I handled one last week. While they do not feel as cheap as their Sub 2000, they are still a Kel-Tec. Might make for a decent truck rifle, but I wouldn't trust my life to one and definitely won't buy one.

DMK:

What kind of sights are they? It looks like to me that the rear sight is mounted directly to the weaver rail. I wonder if some kind of arpeture sight could be mounted on the rail?

The factory sights seem like a poor attempt at humor. The rear sight is a non-adjustable plastic arpeture that's mounted to the plastic Picatinny rail. The front sight is a hooded plastic blade that's held in place by two wide plastic screws, one on the left, and one on the right. To adjust for windage, one loosens the plastic screw on one side, and then tightens the one on the other side to maintain the tension. To adjust for elevation, one loosens a screw, slides the blade vertically, and then tightens that screw back into place. There are no "click" adjustments, the adjustments are quite imprecise (especially the elevation), and adjusting the windage is likely to alter the elevation setting.

You can see some detail yourself in the SU-16 owners manual, available online here: http://www.kel-tec.com/documents/su-16manual.pdf . Read 'em and weep!

If it's decently accurate, this rifle seems born to wear some kind of holo-sight or red-dot.

I'm not a huge fan of the Mini-14 sights, but at least they're sane! Oh, for an AR-15.

I agree, the sights are absolutely a joke. They would have to be shaved off using my Randall. On the one I held, the front sight is a red piece of plastic that is bent to the side. I reached up and tried to bend the thing back to "true", but to no avil. Scope is the way to go with this rifle.
