Went to range today, zero'd some M4's, did some 5-15 meter CQC shooting with M4 and M9. Invited the Germans to come play and let them shoot our M4, M9, M240 and M203 with training rounds. At the end, I got to put a mag through the G36.

The G36 is a very nice weapon. It felt lighter than the M4 and also felt more controllable in burst. It has 2 sights. A red dot scope on top and a low power scope with circle type reticule below it combined in one unit. Acquiring the sight was a little slow, they are kinda smallish. It would be better to just put an illuminated dot in the low power scope and have one bigger sight IMO. I owned a full size silhouette target from standing at 50m and 75m. Overall, great weapon.

Sorry, no pics...I was running the range, so I wasn't in "combat tourist" mode.;) I think they enjoyed my German/English fire commands "Shooters ready, zwie to the body, eins kopf"..."FEIND!" ("feind", means enemy...in english I say "threat" and the shooters fire the prescribed # of shots)

Too bad you had to go where you get shot at to get some time with the G36.

Buddies 'nuff with the Deuschlanders to get a repeat session?

How's the G36 on mag changes?

The G36 is probably one of the coolest asssault rifles. Lightweight, controllable, futuristic, sexy.... what more can ya ask for.

What more could I ask for?

Better sights.
Plastic that doesn't melt.
A rear stock that doesn't break.

Other than that, it's great. :p

Paddle type like on the AK, with training it would be no problem.

Heh, well not yet...knock on wood. Peace seems to break out wherever I go (just while I'm there unfortunately). I have yet to be shot at here and I participated in a major offensive. Wasn't attacked in Iraq, in Baghdad, on the infamous route Irish for 5 months. Maybe I smell bad, not worth attacking? It's a weird position to be in, I've trained to close with and destroy the enemy all my adult life...I have yet to ever do my job. On the other hand, who wants someone to try to kill them? Pretty mixed up and conflicting thoughts. Someone just needs to shoot at me and get it over with...I much prefer bullets to IEDs.

It's a neat weapon, I've shot a few G36 variants. Runs clean, very controllable in full auto, and it is light.

Not anything I'd pee myself to own, nor is it an AR-killer as many believe it to be, but it's a good AW.

Not anything I'd pee myself to own,
Bah, ha,ha.:D Ditch the handle and built in sight module for a rail, make it out of "space age polymer" ala Glock :uhoh: (just tougher material) and I might get a bit moist in the unmentionables. It did shoot quite nicely.

Strambo, regardless if you get any serious trigger time in Afghanistan or not I want to thank you for your service.

Question: do the Bundeswehr soldaten ever get out into the sh-- at all, or do politics keep them out of the combat in Afghanistan? Do any of the Germans express their views on this either way- either wanting to stay out of fighting or wishing they could see some action? It must be tough when your grandfather saw extreme combat- glorious victories and bitter defeats- on a scale beyond what most men in history have experienced, and meanwhile the Germany keeps its troops restricted to limited roles today.

The G36 sounds like a really nice rifle. Any word on it eventually replacing the M-16?

buck, the XM8 program is dead. The chances of the G-36 replacing the M16 are about zero.

Not that I am an expert, but I would agree with what Correia just said. By the time that your military feels compelled to do away with the M4/M16 stuff, something newer and more boner-ific that current assault rifles will be chosen to replace it.

Not a bad rifle, but it does have its drawbacks. Sight lenses are too small, it has a bolt stop but lacks a bolt release feature (so you have to work the charging handle anyway), and the optics fog up in wet conditions. The nubbins on the magazines create their own problems when it comes to magazine pouches, and the folding stock is too light for buttstrokes.

Other than that, it's OK...it works well and puts the bullets where you want them. It's just not the be-all and end-all of assault weaponry...but then again, no rifle is.

The German KSK was involved in Tora Bora back in 2001/2002, and they've been doing plenty of anti-Osama work in the region since then. The regular German Afghanistan contingent has been shot at in the past, and I doubt they took it with a smile and a wave.

I watched this program on the AN-94, and well, it pretty much kicks any other assault rifles ass.

Spencer, just because you saw it on TV doesn't make it real. :)

We've got people on this board who actually design weapons for a living.
We've got soldiers from elite units who actually get to test these things years before they come to market.
We've got SOTs that sell these things to special people and work with them years before they come to market.

From my experience, much about what you hear about new weapons usually turns out to be hype, and then you spend the next couple of years watching threads where guys who've actually beta tested the new weapons argue with people that saw the guns on TV or used them in a video game. But I suppose that's the power of the internet.

Since there are about two dozen westerners that've shot an AN94, and most of the information about the gun that is public is from the factory that is pimping it, I'll take that info with a grain of salt.

strambo and everybody who defends us,we love ya' all.Hoping for the day when you all can come on home.

What comments did the Germans have for American weapons as compared?I was looking at a certain site resently and saw that there are some Danish soldiers over there also. For me come to find they carry for the most part M16s,did'nt know that.

Yeah, I recall reading threads of folks taking SL-8's and converting them something very similar to a semi-auto G36. No first-hand experience, just spreading Internet rumors like a good admin.

This is a little off topic, sorry, but what in the world makes the AN-94 so amazing?

For starters it looks like it was made by somebody who knows what an AK looks like but can't draw too good, and the muzzle device looks like a referee's whistle. Second, from what I've read it sounds like it is a) a very complicated design and b) a very uncomfortable design. And third I don't believe for a second the claims that a trained shooter can "put two rounds through the same hole at 100 meters". .1 MOA from something with AK roots and so many moving parts seems highly unlikely.

Oh, and it's chambered in 5.45x39 which I don't believe is an ideal assault rifle round at all, and don't give me any of that poison bullet nonsense. The fact that the Muj lived long enough to die of infected wounds and start people calling it the "poison bullet" tells me it's not doing it's job.

SuperiorMarksman_18: "The G-36 is a great gun. Too bad we won't be seeing a civilian legal version anytime soon."

There actually is one, the SL-8. But get this: the receiver is white plastic. It has a thumbhole type stock and is an ugly piece of work. Check out www.hkpro.com.

We didn't really talk a lot. They came out, shot and left. I'm sure most of them have probably shot an M4/M16 variant before. Interestingly, they all shot pistols one-handed bullseye style. Wasn't real efficient for the drills I was calling out.:D They could work a M240B from the bipod though, very good burst control and accuracy.

I think politics does keep them out of the front line fighting...same with many other coalition forces. US, Britain, Canada and the Netherlands are the ones "gettin' some". Just personal observation of course, not in any way an official position...I ain't no politician.;)

I handled one at a gun shop a week ago.
The stock looked more grey to me and it looked like an interesting piece, but I lost interest as soon as I got it in my hands.
Not only did the stock feel hollow, but there seemed to be a several inch wide hole in the front of the stock where the barrel floated out of.

I remember thinking, "All this for .223?"
Oversized, overpriced, and too much plastic.
