San Antonio, Houston, depending on my mood
My "neighborhood" is a street that leads into the university campus made up of 8 or so apartment complexes on either side of the road. Most of the people that live in my complex and the ones around me are students, or families w/o kids, or maybe 1 or 2 very young kids (there is also an elementary school across the street).

However, in the last few days we have had a string of "taggings" on buildings and signs up and down the street. This has gotten concerning, because it started with one sort of tag, which I cant read or understand, but I can recognize. It starts with an "M" and the word, if it can be called that, looks sort of like it might be "Muuy" or something.

Then, it seems as if someone else came along, sprayed over it trying to cover it up, and then wrote another string of letters next to, or below it.

Then, the first person or people came along, covered up THAT one, and replaced their original tag in even bigger letters.

So what is going on? This part of town isnt exactly known for gang activity, being on the northern tip of the city, with that sort of thing relegated mostly to the south side.

However, there is no reason to say that any gangs might not be trying to expand their territory into my neighborhood, etc.

On the other hand, it might just be some dumb wanabe kids, with tagging the extent of their illicit enterprise.

Any LEOs or savvy individuals have an tips on how to tell the difference between the two?

I am thinking of calling SAPD and asking them if they know whats up.

Sorry I can't provide any info on how to differentiate between taggers and gang taggers, but I can say...clean it up quick! Sometimes the police dept. or city will have a service where they come out and clean up/repaint the graffitied areas. Otherwise, calls to landlords, etc., might be in order. You certainly don't want to leave it for any length of time.

Calling the police is definitely a good idea. They may want to come out and take pictures in order to track possible gang/tagging activity in the area.

As I once heard a gang officer say: "When you have graffiti you have gangs. When you have graffiti being marked over you have gang problems."

In other words, gangs are everywhere, watch your six.

Take a picture

Get into contact with an officer who works on gang crimes in the area and see if they can identify it.

The crossing out of tags is a sign of disrespect and most could interpret as a death threat to that particular gangs members.

Sorry, just answered my own question.

Cavalo Creek?

Knew a guy a few years back, bought a city auction house, turned out to be a drug house (brand new steel door in the basement, with a hole cut in it).

It had some graffiti on the street in front.

He went home. Came back. With black spray paint. And something else.

So there he was, can of spray paint in his left hand, bent over, spraying over the graffiti, and I can't believe his situational awareness was so screwed at this time, but a police car pulled up behind him, and asked him what he was doing...

"Spraying over this drug-house graffiti on this house I just bought - paperwork's in the car."

"Okay - no problem. Is that thing loaded?"

"Yes."

"Good."

You see, he was spraying left handed, because he had a battle rifle in his right hand...

And it wasn't one of those little semi- things either...

I can't believe his situational awareness was so screwed at this time,
Battle rifle won't do much good if you don't see the thug behind you with a Jennings.
OTOH, maybe he knew the police were there, and thought it would be less threatening for them if they initiated the approach. I'd be concerned if the guy I was approaching turned to face me holding a rifle.

When you have graffiti being marked over you have gang problems

That was MY first thought...!

+1 to taking a picture...and you might want to do it quick-like. I saw some graffiti on a building close to where I work. The wife of one of my supervisors (LEO) told me to take a pic. I kept forgetting my dang camera, and a few days later the owners of the building had painted it over...
