Gun Collection "Must Have" - Handgun

Must have?? Hmmm. To be honest, there are lots of good ones.

To be opinionated: Hi Powers (both MKIII & GP Comp), several Smith .357's & .44 Specials, and probably two Glocks (a G19 & a G23).

There are others I'd definitely enoy, like a TC Contender in several calibers for hunting.

Collection is the operative word here. Since we assume there is to be more than one gun, i.e. for self-protection, home defense, etc. I would say every collection needs at least one .22. Simply put, .22s are the most fun you can have shooting, and fun is also a great argument to throw up to the antis. I prefer Rugers, but any quality .22 will do.:D

Colt 1851 navy .36 cal
Colt 1911 .45acp
Colt Saa .45colt
S&W mdl 10 .38spl
S&W mdl 29 .44mag

These would in my opinion be a good start.

My mimimum musts (also some of my firsts, go figure):
-S&W K-frame (or equivelent), preferably in .357mag but .38spl is acceptable. My choice is a 3" K-frame .357 as ideal.
-1911
-9mm auto

With those you are ok. The 9mm ammo and .38s out of the K-frame are cheap enough that you can get by without a .22. However, a .22lr would be a good addition as well.

Hmm... There are a lot of guns listed here as "must haves" and I don't have any, nor want them!

I don't own any Beretta's. I have SIG's.
I don't any Rugers or Colts - just Smith's. But a Colt Python or SAA would be nice.

And I don't own, nor will I ever own any Glocks.

And I don't own, nor will I ever own any Glocks.

That's too bad - you are missing out on a fine weapon, especially the G19.

This from a man with 10 Sig's, mind you...

Let's see:

IMO, you need a .22 pistol (revolver or auto is left to the individual), a self-defense pistol (caliber and action again left up to the individual), a magnum revolver (.357 or .44.....if you asked me, I'd say S&W or Ruger), and one "this-one-is-really-cool" pistol (Desert Eagle, MAC10, M11/9, or whatever else turns your crank...).

Of course, you can add to this list: One "I-saw-Arnie/Jean-Claude/Sly-use this-one-in-Marked-for-Certain-Bloody-Screaming-Death-XVIII" pistol (oops,
this is probably the DE...well I liked Marked for Certain Bloody Screaming Death......). One "this one is a plastic wondergun" (hadda get one in on the Glock guys:neener: ), and one "this 1911A1 costed me $1800 bucks....so far....."

Okay, okay, I'll stop.......

ANM

A. Sig P210
B. Mauser C96 (Broomhandle)
C. Smith and Wesson Registered Magnum with four inch barrel

Open Carry pistol
something big, scary and impressive like a HK USP, Glock 17, SIG P226, 1911, Walther P99, etc for open carry usage for all to see. I'll take the USP in .45acp!

Concealed Carry pistol
a small but powerful ccw gun for concealment, like maybe a SIG P245 or P239, Colt Officers, micro Glock, Kahr, etc. Gimme the P239 in .357 SIG!

Hideout pistol
ultralight .38 special/.380 small hideout gun like a Ti or Sc Smith & Wesson Jframe, Taurus titanium, old S&W or Colt aluminum frame revolver, Colt Pony or other small .380, etc. I'll take that S&W 360 in .357mag!

Target/Plinking pistol
something really really accurate and (preferably) cheap to shoot too. For target use to keep your eye sharp, and plinking just for fun too... A quality target grade .22LR, somethig like a Browning Buck Mark, Ruger MkII, SIG Trailside, etc. Gimme the Trailside!

Thats pretty much my "minumum"...

On top of that, and given some more funds and other sitiuations I'd add:

Woods/hunting sidearm
something to carry as a sidearm when walking/hiking/hunting with a long gun. There for emergency use and maybe mercy shots or possibly some small game up close under the right conditions. A 4 inch double action .38/.357/.44/.45 revolver pops to mind here, but a short barreled Colt SAA would do nicely too. An older S&W Mountain Gun or one of the new ultralight Lframes might do nicely, as would a S&W 625 in .45acp (albeit kinda heavy). Colt Diamondback/Python is heavy too, but would be nice as well. If S&W ever made a Sc "M325" in .45acp I'd probably take that, until then I'll have to stick with the "heavy" version, the 625.

Hunting pistol (smallgame)
A 4 to 6 inch .357 would be nice here, as would that 625 in .45acp/ar or even a lightweight 4" .41/.44/.45colt with light loadings, again, something like a S&W mountain gun would be nice. A decent .22LR revolver or autoloader will fill in here nicely for the really small stuff, and if you pick your big game hunting pistol well then they will balance each other nicely and leave no gaps in your hunting capabilities. My favorite is the 625 here too, it serves double duty I guess.

Hunting pistol (big game)
Something like a 6" to 8 3/8" .41 or .44 mag, or maybe a stout old Ruger in .45 Colt with some hotter loads. A T-C Contender in .35 Rem/.45-70 or one of the powerful wildcat calibers would be nice too. I'll take the T-C Contender with 2 barrels, a 12" hunter in .223, and a 12" hunter in .45-70. That would be a pretty useful combination.

On top of these I might add a few "competition" pistols, like a revolver or single shot pistol in a high velocity caliber for Silhouette shooting, and maybe a couple of accurized Bullseye guns in .22lr and .45acp.

I'd just order another barrel for my T-C here for the silhouette, maybe one in .357 Max or .30/30. And for the Bullseye shooting I'd go with a pair of 1911s, both homebuilt then sent out for tweaking, one a .22LR and the other a .45. Both setup as identically as possible.

Well, thats pretty much my "minimum" :D

A "must have" is one wher your collection is incompleat without it. It depends on your defination of collection also. Is it a shooting collection or a collecting collection? There would be different "must haves" for each collection. I give my must have for both lists.

Collecting collection:
Luger
Colt 1911
Walther P-38
Walther PPK
Broomhandle Mauser
Colt SAA
S&W revolver of some type
Makarov
BHP

Shooting must have collection
.22 semi-auto
9mm auto
.357mag revolver

All good choices so far.

My take (FWIW) of "must haves"

Black powder... a single shot flint or percussion cap
Black powder... a Colt 51, Paterson or Walker replica revolver
.22... a revolver (SA and DA) and a semi-auto
.38... S&W M&P/10
.357... your pick, I settled on a 586
9mm... Broomhandle, Luger, BHP and P-38
.44... S&W 24 and 29
.45... SAA (Colt) and 1911 (acp)

YMMV

I kinda like Tamara's decision to limit her collection to only own every S&W revolver that they ever produced, but I'm not going to give up mine, just to frustrate her goal of having them ALL

Adios

How about one that doesn't exist? Like a Glock 34 or 35 size gun in say 357 SIG or even 9x23 Winchester?

Or a Glock single action revolver? What would that look like?

Defining "MUST"

Must Have:
A Handgun which:
- You can carry on your hip (concealed)
- Fires a cartridge capable of reliably penetrating a minimum of 12" of properly calibrated ballistic gelatin.
- Can discharge these cartridges with a very high degree of reliability in all conditions you expect to find yourself in.

The following are "should haves":
- .22lr for cheap practice, ideally very similar to your carry weapon.
- Back-up gun, probably a revolver, and probably .38 Spcl.
- A spare for your carry gun, in case it goes down.
- A gun to lend out to friends who might need one, but didn't see the light before their life became in danger.

The following are "nifty to have":
1911A1
CZ-75/85
H&K P7
A 10mm
P-35 / Hi-Power
SIG P210
Something really, really powerful.
