Gun control in Mexico

Saw this mentioned in a book the other day.
Does anyone know what kind of gun ownership is allowed in Mexico?
With all the shootings there and on the border it looks like the media and the libs would be screaming for stricter gun control there. But maybe they already have it.
Any knowledge or thoughts?

Its very strict. Nothing over .380 in a handgun as far as I know and probably strict restrictions on rifles. As we all know, it is very effective...

Some libs, I believe you meant to say. Because not all, probably not even a majority, support gun control in Mexico. Or here at home.

Unless by liberal you solely and narrowly define it by that one criterion.

It is extremely strict from what I understand. It's obviously done a great job of reducing violent crime.

38 super was always the favored big handgun round.

Of course, if you work for a cartel then anything is unfortunately possible.

Things are so far out of control and the drug cartels have so much power and money, not a place on my list of travel spots

Mexico has strict gun laws, although their constitution has the right to keep arms for home defense. All guns must be licensed however.

.380 is the limit for semi-auto handguns, .357 for revolvers. (I assume they mean .357 Magnum) 12 ga. is the limit for shotguns, but all shotguns must have a barrel of at least 25." Rifles are limited to .30 cal.

BTW, I'm a Liberal and I don't have a problem with people owning guns. Most of my liberal friends don't have a problem with guns either. I resent blanket statements about Liberals that are patently false.

Members of hunting clubs might be able to acquire hunting guns in an otherwise prohibited caliber.

There is one gun store (in Mexico City) and it takes about a month for a purchase to be approved. Approval will be denied once you own more than 2 handguns or 10 long guns.

Carry permits exist, but are rare. Even if you get a carry permit, the biggest gun one can carry is a .380.

Wasn't the legal limit on civilian hand guns set on a bore diamiter of .38? I know that the Colt .38 Super was a concidered a status symbol in Mexico some years back. I think it is illegal to have "military calibers" there.

I'm just curious, and this is sincere curiosity. My question, and I apologize in advance because I already know this question doesn't belong here is this: If there are so many liberals who support the 2A, why is it always a fight to have 2A, especially in coastal urban cities? In big cities with large liberal populations it seems "they" always want to pass legislation that severely restricts rights. If it isn't liberals who fight 2A rights, then who is it?

Disclaimer: I want to make it clear the question is not politically motivated and I don't find that I identify with liberals or conservatives as a whole. For me, it depends on the issue.

ArtP; Answering this question would be getting off-topic, as your question was. Suffice it to say that many Liberals have no problem with guns.

Owen; the .38 Super was a biggie in Mexico years ago. I believe at that time Mexico prohibited private persons from owning a handgun in a military caliber, which at that time meant 9mm & .45 ACP. The .38 Super was built by Colt on the 1911 (.45 acp) frame. Didn't sell much here, but down south it did well.

I could be mistaken on this as I'm jgoing from memory. (Gun guys please add/correct)

Please don't insult our intelligence by suggesting there is no correlation between liberal thought and love of gun control. It certainly is not absolute, but the connection is undeniable. Most every lib politician is a champion for additional restrictions on gun rights. If you are in doubt, move here to NY. Or to CA, IL, MA, DC, and so on and so on.

iirc Mexico forbids military calibers, which include non-current military calibers. Thus, no 8mm Mauser for example. OR 38 Special! Ownership by noncitizens is forbidden. Possession of guns or ammo without permits is a long stretch in prison. However, like most things in a Kleptocratic government like Mexico, it's not what you know, its who you know who can be paid to help you out. Pay the right Mordida to the right person and you can be surprised at the things that will work in your favor.
