Gun Fit

Scythe,

Rifle shooting offhand (standing) is done in an erect position, perhaps even leaning backward slightly to offset the weight of the rifle extended in front of you.

Shotgun shooting offhand is (or should be) done with a bit of a forward lean with perhaps about 2/3 of your weight on your front foot.

The fit is somewhat similar although the shotgun shooter shouldn't lean his cheek over top of the comb of the stock unless he wants a bruised cheek. Also, a shotgunner typically has his forward hand closer to the receiver of the gun than does a rifle shooter.

When in the shooting position, the tip of your nose should be about 1.5 to 2.0 inches from the knuckle at the base of your thumb.

Your head should be mostly upright with just a slight tilt to the right for right handed shooters. Your eye should be directly behind the receiver in such a way that the front bead appears to be sitting on top of the receiver and in the middle (from side to side).

If you have to strain to get into this position, then something isn't right. You should be able to close your eyes, bring the gun up to the shooting position, then open your eyes and your dominant eye should be in the correct position.

Most adult males will need about 14.0" to 14.8" Length of Pull (LOP) measured from the front of the trigger to the rear surface of the recoil pad. However, height, arm length, neck length, chest size, etc will have an influence on the correct LOP.

I hope this helps.

Dave & Pete,
Thanks. That was the info I was looking for. I do like my front hand next to the receiver any ways, so that hasn't changed too much on the shotgun. Since it is a pump, it actually has me further out than I prefer (on rifles, my hand is within 2 inches of the mag well off hand, prone it is just a little bit further out).
