If you end up paying a FFL to send it, you're just eating up your profit.
All my sales ads have a $200 fee listed if I have to ship using an FFL on my end. This gives the buyer incentive to find an FFL that receives from individuals.

The reason that some FFL holders only receive from other FFL holders doesn't make much sense to me. There is no law stating that the shipping FFL has to run a check with their PD for stolen guns or whatever, so nobody is really protected by this mindset.

After reading all the horror stories I need to post this.

I have it good and so should you. Here is the DEAL for Ohio buyers. He's only about a 1/2hr from my favorite outdoor range, Tusco Rifle Club near Dover. Smaller shop/quick stop/bait store combo. Does transfers for $1. Will do your consignment for $5. He handles the clubs transfers for the yearly raffle for the last 3 years. May not be the biggest, most convenient or well stocked but no one can say he's over priced.

Only used him a couple of time but never ran into a problem.

there is a valid reason for this... its called saving thier butt. Think about it, you a send off a gun to a FFL... the guy fails the background check. The FFL can't just send it back.

In my opinion, in this situation the buyer failed at doing his homework and the receiving FFL can add the firearm to his stock, or buy it out from the buyer or whatever. It is not the sellers responsibility to make sure background checks can be passed or anything else on the buyers end.

Folks, again, this thread is about SHIPPING HASSLES when using an FFL holders services. There are only 9 gazillion threads on "my dealer only charges $X to receive firearms and throws in a bottle opener" around here.

simple solution... buyer pays the shipping fees including the sellers FFL fees... if the buyer doesnt like it, it falls on him to find a FFL that will accept shipments from a non-FFL... they arent all that hard to find

In my exp working for a FFL, most people that failed background checks, had no idea they were going to fail.

As a biz owner I can understand why another biz owner would not want that headache.

What if the seller doesn't want the gun back? It's not the sellers responsibility to run a background check on the buyer in advance.

I personally include many pictures and a very good description in my ads. Not passing a background check on the buyers end is not a valid reason for me to take the gun back, after the sale.

thats just it. The FFL can't just send it back to you.

So what the FFL holder should just keep it in his safe? They can not legally sell it.

the FFL I worked ran in to big probs with a transaction where the buyer failed the back ground check.,. Was shipped to the us, guy failed the back ground check. The guy made a drive from so cal to pick up his gun... only prob was he failed the back ground check too.

Would you want to deal with that head ache?

Woozie.

My guy charges $30 to recieve. Not sure he charges anything to send out other than shipping. If he does, I doubt it's more than $30. I'm pretty sure he doesn't charge anything, however.

So your FFL holder wants to "pass the buck" back to the sending FFL? What's the sending FFL holder gonna do with it if the seller doesn't want it back?

That is not High Road behavior.

If the buyer fails the background check, then he can not take possession and needs to make arrangements to sell the gun. Perhaps at a substantial loss -- to discount the price, pay shipping, consignment, whatever. It's the buyer problem. If anything, it may be a good opportunity for the FFL holder -- either to establish some goodwill, collect another fee, or make a deal on the firearm.

I had a guy who I got dozens of transfers from for no cost to me. I tried to give the guy at least 20 bucks because I felt bad but he would never take it. Then one day I happen to have 5 pretty cheap rifles that I bought in a lot. The guy's son tried to say " we have a 30 dollar a gun transfer fee you know". Normally I would just pay it and shut up but that would put my total cost in transfer fees above what the total cost of the rifles was. I would never have bought it if I knew that was going to happen. Anyway I argued with him and I had one last rifle that was coming in and it was to be the last one I was going to buy for a while. I had been waiting on it for almost a year now and when I went to pick it up the same guy tells me yup there is a new transfer fee. I paid it on the rifle, left, moved a week later and never went back...

Last time I shipped anything I just took my 2 pistols to the FedEx hub and convinced the guy to ship them ground. No big deal.

Before the local gunsmith closed up shop, he sent a gun off for me. All he did was charge me the actual shipping price, which wasn't much since he could send it USPS.

Liquid Tension, how long ago was it that you shipped Fedex ground?

This is "possibly" the reasoning. I sent a crossbow back to the factory, for repair. A good friend owns the UPS shipping station, and said he was giving me a discount. It cost me $38 and change to ship it. When it was fixed and returned, it cost Horton, $8. to send UPS. Go figure?
