I'm considering scaling back my collection. What are the downsides to either of these fine gun selling sites?

Auction vs. classified - i'd say it depends on what you're selling, and the price you want for it.

I've only had luck (as a buyer) on gunbroker, no luck on gunsamerica - it seems that people sell stuff and don't take down the ad in a timely fashion. Also, i may be wrong, but i think that gunsamerica charges a middleman fee, while gunbroker does not...it may go to the seller, though, and not the buyer.

Stand by for someone with selling experience to weigh in.

I sold a rifle thru Gunbroker.com and will share the details:

Gunbroker charges a reasonable fee for listing and final sale. Their site has all the info so I won't repeat it here.

Gunbroker attracts both honest and dishonst buyers. For example, the rifle sold quickly but then it turned out the Buyer was Canadian and insisted I ship the rifle with false info about contents of the box. I refused and reminded this charactor my ad stated USA Buyers only. His next ploy was to insist I ship the rifle to his friend in Ohio. Again I refused. Understand that going away to prison has no attraction to me.

I reported this guy to Gunbroker thru their seller services. They refunded the final sales fee and re-listed it for me. Then I blocked this guy from future bidding on my auction. I found the Gunbroker site authority person to be both helpful and very prompt.

My advise: go thru several well written existing ads by Dealers. When you find one you like, contact him and ask if you can copy his info regarding authorized buyers, shipping details, etc. A well written ad protects you.

Hoping this is helpful.

If I was to rank the top three gun auction sites it would be (from best to worse):
1. Gunbroker
2. Auctionarms
3. Gunsamerica

I have only used AuctionArms, as a buyer. The seller and I were both noobs there with no feedback. I placed my initial bid, and after thinking more about how much I wanted the piece, raised my bid substantially. I won the auction and shipped off the money, and less than a week later my dealer called to say it was in. I was quite pleased with it, and left the seller positive feedback, as he did for me. Done.

+1 Gunbroker. I have bought one rifle and sold another. Both transactions were great.

Bought a S&W M41 on GunBroker. Said I would buy it, sent him the check, he sent the gun.

My exact same experience (x2) with the good folks on THR it should be noted. :)

I've bought and sold on Gunbroker and Auction Arms. I have at least a hundred transactions between the two of them.

I prefer the vibe at Auction Arms better, but there is no doubt that GunBroker reaches a larger audience and simply has more auctions.

I've used them both and have found them both to be an excellent resource. I've seen prices go haywire on Gunbroker -- two and three times the actual value of the gun, on occasion. I've also picked up what I consider to be some sweet deals on Gunbroker ... deals I'm sure the seller would rather not think about today.

And +1 on taking a look at Auction Arms. It's a good site for buyers and sellers both.

I believe on gunsamerica, as a seller you are not required to list a credit card to get an account, so it is easier to create a fictitious name.
EDIT: I was going to dispute this, but it appears to be correct.

Incorrect. You must have a valid card on file in order to sell on GA.

From my experience buy from AuctionArms.com and sell on Gunbroker.com. Better buys on AuctionArms.com, firearms seem to sell at a higher price on Gunbroker.com due to the larger audience. I seldom go to GunsAmerica.com but it is more of a retail store, fixed price, option for those who prefer that method.

Just keep buying firearms...good investments and helpful to the economy.

I've bought quite a few guns from both Gunbroker and GunsAmerica. I have only sold guns on GunsAmerica. I've not had any problems with either one. I've also had good luck with AuctionArms.

I have bought 3 shotguns on GB. They were in excellent/mind condition, all from new sellers, and I paid a fair price for them. I would try my hardest to sell online through this site or other free gunsites first before going to the auction sites.

I've used gunbroker, no problems. I didn't even try gunsamerica because you have to register just to look at images of the guns, and the software looks antiquated.

I'll check out auction arms.
