I am looking at bidding on a S&W model 17 on gunbroker. The seller has an A+ with only one previous sale. Currently there are no bids and the clock runs ou tomorrow afternoon. Are sellers vetted in any way by Gunbroker. I realize these guys have to start with 0 sales to make their first sale, but how comfortable would you be to place a bid?

Not really. GB runs your credit card and requires sellers to link a bank account.

Neither would stop a scammer.

"How comfortable...?" Great question. It's where I always start with GB, but then I move on to my next question -- "Am I willing to loose my money?" I never bid on anything on GB unless the answer is "yes -- I'm willing to loose it all." Been scammed so many times, last time was by a seller with an A+ rating and over 900 sales. Best of luck -- let us know how it turns out.

risky. See who left the single feedback. Every scammer I've seen lately with 1 feedback, that feedback was left by another obviously fake account, on a buy-it-now auction that was purchased within a few minutes of the seller listing it.

I would also pass And have done so in quite a few similar instances.

I nearly always only buy from the labeled FFLs on GB and even then only with decent feedback history.

I've had good luck with GB. Ive never been scammed. Of course, by scam I would be less concerned about someone taking the money and not delivering goods. I know it happens, but I think it's rare. I'm far more concerned that the gun is in a lesser condition than was described.

If the seller does not accept credit cards, then yes that's a red flag. If he takes credit cards and you don't receive your item, you can do a charge-back on your card with the issuer.
As it happens he doesn't take credit card. He is auctioning a S&W model 17 with a starting bid of $700 with no bidders and the auction ends around noon. And he's not an FFL.

I have never ordered from GB, though I have been tempted. It is only because a couple of guys whom I really trust, and have known for decades in the competitive shooting community got screwed in a couple of transactions. In one, it turned into a "he said-he said nuh uh not my fault" rodeo between GB and the seller. The other, my buddy got a 1911 that was advertised as LNIB, but looked like it had been dragged behind a truck and gone over by a garage hack with a bastard file fitting a beavertail. The pics were clearly MUCH older than the work done. Bottom line...he got the gun advertised, just not in the condition advertised. I had to weld up the tang on the 1911, re-shape and re-profile it to fit a new beavertail, then strip and refinish it. It took me about 20 hours of work to make his pistol look and run right for him.

Ok as a former ffl I will share my experience with gunbroker.

Every item I listed had my shops business card and FFL number in EACH picture so people could fact check me....... I still got phone calls asking why the Google map picture of the shop was a picture of a farm house and they suggested it was a scam. (My grandfather left me his house and property and that's where I started the shop)

Point is I had all the badges on gunbroker and still everyone is suspicious.

If the guy takes credit card I would only pay that way. If it is a scam your charges can be disputed and appropriately returned.

Never pay with check, digital funds, or gift cards

I have just about 90% of the time been able to find the same firearm at a cheaper price just by digging around a bit.

I just think the prices have gotten out of hand on GB for more common firearms when you add in all of the extra fees.

Not to jinx any future purchases, but I've never been scammed, or even burned on GB in my 30-40 purchases. Instead, I've bought some major bargains.

If I see anything that looks suspicious about an ad for an item that I'm interested in, I'll skip it if the red flag is too serious (rarely has this happened on guns that interest me), or I'll communicate with the seller and see what I think afterwards. I've bought from several no-rating and low-feedback sellers (typically not from sellers with negative feedback) and got some of my best bargains from no/low-feedback sellers. Note however, my purchases on GB were almost always used guns (because not much of the new stuff interests me). Perhaps the major scamming happens on the new stuff where price is king and it's easy to put up an ad that's just like all the other ads, except for a bogus low price?

A couple years ago, about the time GB started collecting taxes for my state and also increased their buyer fees, and the typical shipping charge was bumped by most sellers, and gun prices had spiked to the point that I couldn't find anything that I wanted at bargain prices, I pretty much quit buying. I realized that I really didn't have any reason to acquire more guns because I have everything that I really want, and definitely more than I need. As a result, I haven't been an active buyer since 2022, and perhaps the scamming has gotten way worse and I just don't know. But historically IME, if you used decent judgement, it was a safe enough place to buy.

And keep in mind, if nobody had ever bought from sellers with minimal feedback, GB wouldn't exist. Every seller made their first sale with no feedback and no ratings.

ETA: Now I'll probably get scammed out of a thousand bucks next time I try to buy something. That's just how it often seems to work for me -- run my mouth about something that's been good, and it crashes. :)

“he doesn’t take credit card.”

And that would be that.

I don’t know any of the alternative money exchanges or their policies. If he takes regular PayPal, perhaps. Although, does PayPal get wonky about firearm purchases?

I understand all the skepticism. But how is anyone supposed to start selling on GB. Everyone has to start at square one from a ratings perspective. Can an individual sell on GB? If so, how many individuals can take a credit card. I guess I am somewhat naive about online purchases because I would never buy online. I want to touch and feel before I buy.

I have shipped to more than one person here without receiving payment first. If they don't send, its their problem and not mine. Never been let down.

I can see being hesitant. You never really know who your buying from or who is buying. Never been cheated on Gun Broker.

I think “Gunbroker checkout” allows regular folks to accept credit cards. They just have to eat the 4% CC fee or pass it on to the customer.

Well, the auction expired without any bids. Now it is back on.
Looks like no one else bit, either.

GB has it’s issues. I’ve bought nearly 150 items off GB, mostly guns but also parts, ammo, reloading stuff, etc.

I got a few great deals, a few so-so buys and a couple of sellers fooled me. One guy with two “Top 10 seller” sites listed reloading stuff they didn’t have in stock and it took me several weeks to get refunded, one consignment seller sold me a spotless 8 3/8” S&W Model 14-3 that had an undisclosed bulge in the barrel near the muzzle, one sold me a “.38 Special” S&W Victory model that was actually a .38 S&W that was bored out, and one Model 48-2 had to go to S&W for internal issues

The rest of my GB buys were received in the condition the seller described and I am happy with them.

$700 for a nice, clean S&W Model 17 is riiiiiight on the edge of “too good to be true”, IMHO. This is where scammer sharks like to swim; great deals from low digit sellers scream out SCAM!, so crooks make it a hundred or two dollars less than average to hook folks seeking a bargain. Personally, I would pass on that seller and look for a Model 17 from one with a more established reputation. It might cost you a bit more, but peace of mind on a genuine buy is better than possibly losing all $700 for nothing.

Good luck.

Stay safe.

Why are you interested in that one? He did not list a dash number. It is a newer one from 2010 and has the internal lock. There are lots of M 17 for sale.

GB has been around almost as long as eBay, I’ve bought and sold on GB almost since their inception. I’ve bought hundreds of guns & accessories and haven’t been scammed yet. I will say there have been a couple times I could have been happier with a firearm because I didn’t notice something in a picture, but would look back and there whatever blemish I didn’t notice was there.

If I’m skeptical about something I’ll message the seller and ask for a picture from a specific angle … if they refuse or ignore my question I don’t bid.

One of my first purchases, and the first big one was back 25 or so years ago, it was a HK91 receiver for $1300 (seems cheap now!) and it was at a pawn shop in Florida. He didn’t have any feedback. I was nervous as heck after winning the auction and sending my money … but I got the receiver and it opened the floodgates to buying on online auctions.

I've been on gumbroker for about 20 years and have an A+ rating as a buyer only. However I have not purchased anything in several years because I bid up to a certain point and I just haven't seen anything that I wanted that bad, so I'm always outbid.
