I was at the local sporting goods store yesterday, and was intending on picking up some more H-100V,but they didn't have it,but they did have H-414 on sale for $23 dollars .I never used this powder before, and didn't even know it was a ball powder, but I bought it because the lable listed 243 and 100 gr bullets data....I did a little reading last nite, and it seems this is not a very popular 243 powder..Some claim it to be a little fast, and some say it's dirty, and some say it dosn't have enough volume for good case fill..I didn't know that case fill was that inportant, and I realize the H414 is faster than many of the slower powders popular in the 243,but the 4064 powders are pretty well liked for 243,and its faster than H414...Do any of you have any expierence with this powder used with 95-100 gr bullets in 243?

I've got some still laying around, as well as h380. Ball powders ime are usually cheaper than stick. They're a lil more "moody" than a good stick powder for accuracy windows. In my .243 hunting loads I like a combination of as much speed as I can get with accuracy, a Max load of h414 will get it done but I agree about it burning too fast. I generally leave mine in the cupboard for rainy days when I can't find my beloved h1000 or (recently added) I4451 in any stores, (which is pretty much never) but the accuracy node for an 85 gr with h380 makes a good plinking puff load for the kids to practice with! Also, the ball powders meter better.

I don't load for the .243 but my shooting buddy does. With lighter bullets he uses Hybrid 100V like you do. He has used H414/W760 but told me he doesn't get quite the accuracy as with H100V. He rarely achieves the best accuracy with Ball powders. I'm not saying accuracy is poor, only that it's better with stick powders "for me" but not by much. It should only concern you if you are worried about tiny little groups on paper.

With the bullets you use he prefers H4831 or H4831sc. He claims the ammo is more consistent and the slower powder is easier on the barrel. He has not used the super slow powders that are used like H1000, Retumbo, RL-25 and the like.

Thanks Horsey..I knew the H1000 is well thought of for 243, and they did have it,but it was a little over $30 dollars a pound, and my inner titewad took over..I still have enough H100v to last me for a while..I wanted more because I loaded some of the pulled bullets I bought last week, using the same load of 41.5 gr H100v that I use with my Speer, and Sierra 100 gr,and they shot just as well..I checked Walmart for the H1000 because I have seen it there in the past, but they didn't have it yesterday..I need to give it a shot though.

It is one of the more expensive, as is the 4451, they're the extreme temp insensitivity powders though so, for my climate it's easily justified. I would definitely run the 414/760(same powder in case you didn't know) for target fun or to play with new bullet performance tests as I'd be running more volume at that point. I don't remember how much midsouth charges for hazmat, so I tacked on $25 out of habit, and if you buy an 8 lb jug it'll come out to $26 and change per lb of 1000. Just a head's up for you!

I've just started using it with 90 gr. Accubonds. Cases looked pretty clean to me.
Very accurate in my rifle.

I've been able to get 1/3 to 1/2 moa with 100gr Speer and Sierra with H1000 and IMR4166. Sierra 85gr HPBT printed 1/2 moa with IMR 4166. 4166 the Enduron version of 4064.

Do you know what kind of velocities you're getting with the hpbt combo? I ask because I've got a decent amount of those, a BUNCH of the flat bases and I'm loving my 4451 on the 85 weights using 4166 on the 55 btips, but was curious how the 4166 did with middleweight pills since it's a wee bit on the fast side.

Sorry friend I don't have a Chrono, I'd like to know too. 4166 seems to like middle of the road charges. I used Sierra (80-85gr) data for 4064 cause they don't list 4166. It's advertised at 3000fps where I hit my accuracy node. Their test barrel was 22" just like mine, so I figured somewhere around there. The hunting load listed is a max load of 4064 at 3100fps, I tried that and moved out to almost 3 moa.

On another note I did see an odd pressure node(flattened primers) at 35gr of 4166, but recoil and report seemed light at that point. Thought it may be bullet wedging so I stepped up .3gr and that disappeared.

Hodgdon says start at 35.9=3000/24" bbl Max =39.5@3249 so you're pretty close I reckon ;) thanks! And I noticed middle of the road preference with the 55 gr too.

Looking at the Hornady 10th for 87gr VMAX their col is 10/1000" shorter and iirc their max is 37.3gr. Hornady doesn't list 4166 either.

Also I seated Sierra 85s at 2.660"(10/1000" over recommend)

Yup, Sierra seats em a lil deeper than me too, I don't chase the lands but I'm shooting happy with 2.68 on all my 85+ weights. With the 55 I'm running 2.61 iirc

Don't tell my 243 that H414 isn't very popular, you'll break it's little heart. I quit using 4350 in the cartridge after I tried the 414 for the first time 25 years ago. Load the 40 gr charge they list on the can with your favored 100 gr bullet. Your rifle will thank you.

When I started loading for my .243 I used H414 because it was all that was available at the time. I found same as you, that it was not one of the more popular powders. I was able to find a decently accurate hunting load for me using 100gr Sierra Pro-Hunter over 38.5gr. I also have a load for 87 gr V-Max using 42.5gr H414. I have other powders now, but have not developed another load for the .243 so I cannot tell you if they are better, just that I was able to get a load with H414. As always work up your own loads starting low and working up.

H414/WW760 is my go to propellant for .243. I can't think of any bullet weight that could not be developed into a superbly accurate, and many times scorching fast for it's weight combo. I will say, mag primers are a must IME when using H414 to avoid flyers, and my rifle always shot best with H414, when pressed closer to the floorboard. Great load density, very consistent, meters like water, reliable results... I pretty much consider it my "ball 4350", and love the stuff.
